Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by James Halliwell-Phillipps was originally published in 1844 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Tarlton's Jests, and News Out of Purgatory' is a work that contains a collection witticisms of the famous Shakespearian actor, Richard Tarlton. James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps was born on 21st June 1820, in London, England. Halliwell-Phillipps was privately educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he became intensely interested in the subject of antiquarian English literature. He began publishing works in the field at a very young age, including editing Sir John Mandeville's 'Travels' (1839), and writing an 'Account of the European Manuscripts in the Chetham Library' (1842). His love of literature was accompanied by a passion for all things Shakespearian, producing several publications on 'The Bard' and his works, such as 'Life of Shakespeare' (1848), 'Curiosities of Modern Shakespeare Criticism' (1853), and 'The Last Days of William Shakespeare' (1863). He also took a key role in protecting the historical Shakespearian sites in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Shakespeare's town of birth.

Download or read book John Payne Collier written by Arthur Freeman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 1543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Payne Collier (1789–1883), one of the most controversial figures in the history of literary scholarship, pursued a double career. A prolific and highly influential writer on the drama, poetry, and popular prose of Shakespeare's age, Collier was at the same time the promulgator of a great body of forgeries and false evidence, seriously affecting the text and biography of Shakespeare and many others. This monumental two-volume work for the first time addresses the whole of Collier's activity, systematically sorting out his genuine achievements from his impostures. Arthur and Janet Freeman reassess the scholar-forger's long life, milieu, and relations with a large circle of associates and rivals while presenting a chronological bibliography of his extensive publications, all fully annotated with regard to their creditability. The authors also survey the broader history of literary forgery in Great Britain and consider why so talented a man not only yielded to its temptations but also persisted in it throughout his life.
Download or read book Shakespeare And Comedy written by Robert Maslen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedy was at the centre of a critical storm that raged throughout the early modern period. Shakespeare's plays made capital of this controversy. In them he deliberately invokes the case against comedy made by the Elizabethan theatre haters. They are filled with jokes that go too far, laughter that hurts its victims, wordplay that turns to swordplay and aggressive acts of comic revenge. Through a detailed study which considers tragedies and histories as well as comedies, Maslen contends that Shakespeare's use of the comic mode is always calculatedly unsettling, and that this is part of what makes it pleasurable.
