Book excerpt: Targum Song of Songs (TgSong) contains linguistic features from "literary" Aramaic as found in Targum Onqelos and Targum Jonathan, western Aramaic, eastern Aramaic, Biblical Aramaic, and Syriac. A similar mixing of linguistic features is evident in other targumim, and their language is collectively termed Late Jewish Literary Aramaic (LJLA). Though several of these LJLA texts have been linguistically analyzed, one text that has not received such an analysis is TgSong. Since TgSong expands well beyond the underlying Hebrew, it provides an excellent example from which to analyze distinct linguistic features. This dissertation approaches TgSong in two ways. First, it is a descriptive grammar and includes standard grammatical categories: phonology and orthography, morphology, syntax, and lexical stock. Second, in order to determine how the language is mixed and where the language of TgSong fits into the spectrum of Aramaic dialects, each grammatical feature and lexical item is compared to the other pre-modern Aramaic dialects. This dissertation shows first, that the mixing of linguistic features in TgSong is not haphazard. Individual linguistic features are largely consistent in the text, regardless of their dialectal classification. Second, the language of TgSong is primarily modeled on the language of Onqelos and Jonathan, with a secondary influence being Targumic Jewish Palestinian Aramaic. Eastern Aramaic and Biblical Aramaic elements are not as centrally influential on the language of TgSong, and linguistic elements specific to non-Jewish dialects are rarely attested. Finally, based on the data, it is argued first, that the author is self-consciously writing a targum, in spite of its expansiveness; second, that the well-educated targumist is writing for laity, rather than exclusively for an educated elite; third, that the targumist's linguistic choices allow TgSong to be understood by Jews in all locales, making TgSong a text for Jews of all places.

Book Studies in the Language of Targum Canticles

Download or read book Studies in the Language of Targum Canticles written by Paul R. Moore and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targum Canticles, composed in the dialectally eclectic idiom of Late Jewish Literary Aramaic (LJLA), had immense historic popularity among Jewish communities worldwide. In this work, Paul R. Moore thoroughly analyses several of the Targum’s grammatical peculiarities overlooked by previous studies. Through this prism, he considers its literary influences, composition, and LJLA as a precursor of the highly eccentric Aramaic of the 13th century Spanish cabalistic masterpiece, The Zohar. The study includes transcriptions and analysis of the previously unpublished of fragments of the Targum from the Cairo Geniza, and what is possibly its earliest, known translation into Judaeo-Arabic.

This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Targum to the "Song of Songs."Whatever theories have been advanced in the past, or may still be advanced with regard to the scope and meaning of the "Song of Songs" itself, there can be no doubt as to the character of the Aramaic version, a translation of which is given in this volume. The word "version" is scarcely the correct term; we should rather anticipate and say at once that it is a paraphrase, and just such a paraphrase as will set at rest any conjecture as to what the author himself (whoever he was) thought with regard to the original purpose of this fascinating smaller book of the Bible which he endeavoured to elucidate. The Targum-paraphrase of the Books of the Bible, included in the term "Kethubim" or " Hagiographa," was for a time attributed to one named José or Joseph, surnamed "the Blind," Chief of a Rabbinical Seminary at Sura in the third century; but it has since been proved that the Targums of the several books of the Hagiographa owe their origin to various authors. The Targumist of the "Song" was evidently not troubled with any theories as to whether it had a literal, mystical, or allegorical meaning. After all, there was consistency in the forms and expressions employed in the original j the name of King Solomon did appear in the course of the Book, and the pastoral character as regards scenery and language was quite in keeping with the supposition of Solomon's authorship of it. But the real question for him to determine was, what the original author intended the Book to be, whether "a bridal drama and song," "a pastoral eclogue," "a dramatic poem," or "an epithalamium of a pastoral kind," to be taken seriously and in its literal sense; or, on the other hand, whether the author himself regarded it merely as the framework upon which to construct some higher and wider conception....

Book The Targum of Ezekiel

Download or read book The Targum of Ezekiel written by and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Targum of Ezekiel, when critically analyzed, offers a vivid insight into an area of Jewish theological speculation stretching far back into the history of Jewish religious thought. The complexity of the document, however, compounded by a difficult Mosoretic text, abundant grammatical and syntactical problems, and an infusion of strange language and linguistic peculiarities, challenges the most incisive biblical analysts. Like the Book of Ezekiel, it poses literary, exegetical, and theological problems. The Targum belongs to the same genre as the other official Targumim, designated in Jewish Tradition as Onqelos on the Pentateuch and Jonathan on the Prophets. Its language, basically Palestinian Aramaic, was revised and edited in Babylon; its vocabulary, idiom, grammatical form, and rendering of the Hebrew text are essentially the same as we find in the official Targumim on the other books. But beyond this, the Targum of Ezekiel has some peculiarities distinctly its own.

Book excerpt: If Greek was the language by which Palestinian Jews talked to the Empire, then Aramaic and Hebrew were the languages by which they talked to themselves. In this context, what resulted when they translated the Hebrew Bible into Aramaic? Moments of the inner Jewish conversation about the meaning and relevance of Hebrew Scriptures frozen in Aramaic renditions. The scholars in this volume use these Aramaic translations, known as the Targums, like dioramas, peering through them to glimpse these moments in the development of Judaism and its theology. Dedicated to Ernest G. Clarke, the essays explore the variety of interpretations preserved in the different Targums from the Second Temple and post-Temple periods during which they were composed.
