Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home. “Beautiful and propulsive . . . Book From Flowers to Ash

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Edward Coyle
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2001-10
  • ISBN : 9780816519088
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book From Flowers to Ash written by Philip Edward Coyle and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the N‡yari (Cora) people of northwestern Mexico have experienced violence at the hands of drug producers and traffickers. Although a drug economy may seem potentially lucrative to such peasants, spreading violence tied to this trade threatens to destroy their community. This book argues that the source of the problem lies not solely in drug trafficking but also in the breakdown of traditional political authority. By studying the history of religious practices that legitimate such authority, Philip Coyle shows that a contradiction exists between ceremonially based forms of political authority and the bureaucratic and military modes of power that have been deployed by outside governments in their attempts to administer the region. He then shows how the legitimacy of traditional authority is renewed or undermined through the performance of ceremonies. Coyle explores linkages between long-term political and economic processes and changes in N‡yari ceremonial life from Spanish contact to the present day. As a participant-observer of N‡yari ceremonies over a ten-year period, he gained an understanding of the history of their ceremonialism and its connections to practically every other aspect of N‡yari life. His descriptions of the Holy Week Festival, mitote ceremonies, and other public performances show how struggles over political legitimacy are intimately tied to the meanings of the ceremonies. With its rich ethnographic descriptions, provocative analyses, and clear links between data and theory, Coyle's study marks a major contribution to the ethnography of the Indians of western Mexico and Latin America more generally. It also provides unusual insight into the violence raging across the Mexican countryside and helps us understand the significance of indigenous people in a globalizing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Boston music journalist-turned-corporate writer investigates the suspicious death of a friend from her punk past in this noir mystery. The Boston club scene may be home to a cast of outsiders and misfits, but it’s where Tara Winton belongs—the world she’s been part of for the past twenty years. Now, one of the old gang is dead, having fallen down the basement stairs at his home. With her journalist’s instincts, Tara senses there’s something not quite right about Frank’s supposedly accidental death. When she asks questions, she begins to uncover some disturbing truths about the club scene in its heyday. Beneath the heady, sexually charged atmosphere lurked something darker. Twenty years ago, there was another death. Could there be a connection? Is there a killer still at large…and could Tara herself be at risk? “[A] a fascinating reminiscence of sex, drugs, and rock and roll.”—Kirkus Reviews “Simon writes with authority and affection about a lost world. Highly recommended”—Catriona McPherson, award-winning author of Strangers at the Gate “World Enough, is steeped in the 1980s Boston rock scene, with its sticky-floored clubs, radio stations dusted in coke, stars and hangers-on, seedy barbacks, and all the attendant sin and debauch that emerges after midnight when you can still hear the show ringing in your ears.”—Boston Globe “Simon's dark story shimmers with brilliance—and stands as her finest.”—Richmond Times-Dispatch

Book My Vancouver Dance History

Download or read book My Vancouver Dance History written by Peter Dickinson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, Vancouver dance has received tremendous acclaim nationally and internationally, as witnessed by the success of choreographer Crystal Pite and a rejuvenated Ballet BC. But this is only part of a vibrant and diverse story of contemporary movement practices in the city. In My Vancouver Dance History Peter Dickinson crafts an embodied narrative that focuses on his critical and creative collaborations with nine Vancouver-based dance artists and companies. Mixing interview excerpts with fieldwork descriptions of studio research and performance analysis, Dickinson draws on ten years of close observation to delve into the individual histories of select members of this community, while also relating the cumulative story of Vancouver dance production and performance as it has unfolded in the past decade. The voices of other invested participants interpolate this rich history, and chapters are interspersed with a series of "movement intervals" that reflect key moments in Dickinson's history as a spectator, scholar, and collaborator. In innovative ways, Dickinson suggests that when we pay attention to the larger social topography of dance practice - the sites that give rise to it, the labour that goes into it, and the professional friendships it engenders - we can properly understand dance's contributions to civic life.
