Download or read book Orient Stars written by Heinrich Kirchheim and published by Hali Publications Limited. This book was released on 1993 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orient Stars: A Carpet Collection (London & Stuttgart 1993) is a survey of the most important private collection of carpets and kilims of the late 20th century. Ranging from 12th century Turkish carpets to 19th century Caucasian and Anatolian rugs and kilims, the collection reflects the determination of the late Heinrich Kirchheim and his wife Waltraut. 219 carpets are discussed by the world's leading experts and have become benchmarks in terms of rarity, connoisseurship and research. The book revealed, for the first time, carpets of types previously only seen in Old Master paintings and set the standard for scientific analysis and fine art printing. Described as 'maybe the most splendidly produced major rug book ever', this limited-edition volume with slipcase captures the most exciting private collection of rugs created in living memory and explains why the 'Orient Stars' Collection launched a new global interest in the field of carpet collecting.
Download or read book Historic Floors written by Jane Fawcett and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2007-06-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in the UK to be devoted to historic floors. It introduces an important and largely neglected subject and considers conservation methods in a European context. It traces the history of some of the great floors of Europe from the fourth century B.C. and outlines the development of mosaic, tiles, marble and parquetry floors in secular buildings. The early Christian pavements in basilicas, temples and cathedrals, the creation of medieval tiles, ledger stones and monumental brasses, their destruction by iconoclasts and re-creation during the Gothic Revival, are also discussed. Leading authorities, archaeologists, architects and archivists consider the latest methods of recording and repairing cathedral floors, including those of cathedrals, country houses, the monumental tiled pavements of the Palace of Westminster and other public buildings. Management policies to protect outstanding floors in over-visited sites are considered and historic features particularly at risk, are identified. Urgent action is recommended to contain the damage caused by the dramatic increase in tourism throughout Europe.
Download or read book Venice and the Islamic World 828 1797 written by Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris) and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 828, when Venetian merchants carried home from Alexandria the stolen relics of St. Mark, to the fall of the Venetian Republic to Napoleon in 1797, the visual arts in Venice were dramatically influenced by Islamic art. Because of its strategic location on the Mediterranean, Venice had long imported objects from the Near East through channels of trade, and it flourished during this particular period as a commercial, political, and diplomatic hub. This monumental book examines Venice's rise as the "bazaar of Europe" and how and why the city absorbed artistic and cultural ideas that originated in the Islamic world. Venice and the Islamic World, 828–1797 features a wide range of fascinating images and objects, including paintings and drawings by familiar Venetian artists such as Bellini, Carpaccio, and Tiepolo; beautiful Persian and Ottoman miniatures; and inlaid metalwork, ceramics, lacquer ware, gilded and enameled glass, textiles, and carpets made in the Serene Republic and the Mamluk, Ottoman, and Safavid Empires. Together these exquisite objects illuminate the ways Islamic art inspired Venetian artists, while also highlighting Venice's own views toward its neighboring region. Fascinating essays by distinguished scholars and conservators offer new historical and technical insights into this unique artistic relationship between East and West.

Download or read book Code Switching in Early English written by Herbert Schendl and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex linguistic situation of earlier multilingual Britain has led to numerous contact-induced changes in the history of English. However, bi- and multilingual texts, which are attested in a large variety of text types, are still an underresearched aspect of earlier linguistic contact. Such texts, which switch between Latin, English and French, have increasingly been recognized as instances of written code-switching and as highly relevant evidence for the linguistic strategies which medieval and early modern multilingual speakers used for different purposes. The contributions in this volume approach this phenomenon of mixed-language texts from the point of view of code-switching, an important mechanism of linguistic change. Based on a variety of text types and genres from the medieval and Early Modern English periods, the individual papers present detailed linguistic analyses of a large number of texts, addressing a variety of issues, including methodological questions as well as functional, pragmatic, syntactic and lexical aspects of language mixing. The very specific nature of language mixing in some text types also raises important theoretical questions such as the distinction between borrowing and switching, the existence of discrete linguistic codes in earlier multilingual Britain and, more generally, the possible limits of the code-switching paradigm for the analysis of these mixed texts from the early history of English. Thus the volume is of particular interest not only for historical linguists, medievalists and students of the history of English, but also for sociolinguists, psycholinguists, language theorists and typologists.

Download or read book Facing the Other written by Charles Cordier and published by . This book was released on 2004-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the Second Empire in France, Cordier received several assignments in North Africa and there he completed scientific busts that were just as much works of art. His busts in silver or gilt bronze, onyx and coloured marble are delicate gems, reflecting Cordier's interest in other civilizations, most notably African. The Musee d'Orsay in Paris has organized an unprecedented international exhibition of Cordier's work, highlighting seventy-five sculptures and approximately forty ethnographic photographs. Filled with several texts on his life and work compiled by the exhibition's organizers, this book was created and based on the research by Jeanine Durand-Revillon for the Ecole du Louvre in 1980.
