Download or read book Threads of Life written by Clare Hunter and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This globe-spanning history of sewing and embroidery, culture and protest, is “an astonishing feat . . . richly textured and moving” (The Sunday Times, UK). In 1970s Argentina, mothers marched in headscarves embroidered with the names of their “disappeared” children. In Tudor, England, when Mary, Queen of Scots, was under house arrest, her needlework carried her messages to the outside world. From the political propaganda of the Bayeux Tapestry, World War I soldiers coping with PTSD, and the maps sewn by schoolgirls in the New World, to the AIDS quilt, Hmong story clothes, and pink pussyhats, women and men have used the language of sewing to make their voices heard, even in the most desperate of circumstances. Threads of Life is a chronicle of identity, memory, power, and politics told through the stories of needlework. Clare Hunter, master of the craft, threads her own narrative as she takes us over centuries and across continents—from medieval France to contemporary Mexico and the United States, and from a POW camp in Singapore to a family attic in Scotland—to celebrate the universal beauty and power of sewing.

Book excerpt: "Luminous Threads: Navigating the Tapestry of Life" is a profound exploration of the human condition, weaving together a collection of poems and prose that delve into the heart of existence. Through the lenses of love, loss, joy, growth, and the myriad emotions that color our lives, this book invites readers on a journey that transcends the ordinary, encouraging a deeper engagement with the world around and within. At its core, "Luminous Threads" seeks to illuminate the interconnectedness of our experiences, drawing on the universal themes that bind us all. From the exhilarating heights of love to the depths of sorrow, from the courage found in moments of challenge to the peace discovered in simplicity, the book captures the essence of what it means to be human. Beginning: The Journey Commences The book opens with "The Dawn of Becoming," a poem that symbolizes the awakening of the spirit and the boundless possibilities that lie in the realm of the unexplored. This introduction sets the tone for a voyage of discovery, inviting readers to embark with an open heart and a curious mind. Middle: The Heart of the Journey Through carefully crafted sections, each focusing on a pivotal aspect of life's journey-such as resilience, the spectrum of human emotion, the complexities of relationships, and the pursuit of authenticity-the book offers a mirror to the reader's own experiences. Interspersed with reflective questions, personal anecdotes, and quotes from diverse sources, the narrative encourages introspection and connection, allowing readers to find echoes of their own stories within its pages. Illustrations complement the text, providing a visual dimension to the exploration, while practical exercises invite readers to integrate the themes into their daily lives, fostering personal growth and self-discovery. End: The Journey Reflects and Continues Concluding with "The Twilight of Reflection," the narrative comes full circle, offering a space for contemplation of the journey undertaken. This closing poem, rich with imagery of the transition from day to night, serves as a gentle reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the perpetual motion towards becoming. "Luminous Threads: Navigating the Tapestry of Life" is more than a collection of writings; it is an invitation to embark on a deeply personal journey. It challenges readers to reflect, to embrace the full spectrum of their experiences, and to find beauty in the imperfections of life. Through its pages, readers are encouraged to see themselves as integral threads in the larger tapestry of existence, each contributing to the richness of the human narrative. This book is a beacon for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of life with grace, courage, and an open heart. Download or read book Living Loom written by Keni Arts and published by Keni Arts Int'l. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in two worlds; physical and spiritual. We experience the physical world through sight, sound, touch, taste and feel. The world of the spirit is one of love vs hate, good vs evil, faith vs fear, along with a host of other polarizing terms that describe its existence. We find ourselves living on one or the other side of the 'tracks' in the physical world through any one or combination of factors; economic, social, political, religious, racial; and again the list goes on. We choose on which side of the 'tracks' we'll live in the spiritual world by our words. Living Loom Threads of Life Woven into a Spiritual Tapestry is a book of prose and poetry. The diversity of themes in Living Loom are as though spools of colorful threads were set in a loom and woven into a tapestry of spiritual life that seeks to connect us to God and to one another. The words are about life, even in the threat of death. Living Loom is a collection of words written on the tablet of Keni's experiences and beliefs. With these words, you will be challanged to consider your life in a transformative fashion. Here are some challenges that inspired him to pen Living Loom. Keni was inspired to write Haitian Train after seeing news coverage of a mother determined to find her daughter in the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The story is told from the daughter's point of view; a view that was born under the debris of a collapsed building The impetus to write Pedophile Priests came after Keni heard Miguel talk about the horrors of child sexual abuse committed in the clergy. Miguel (not his real name) was their victim. You don't have to look beyond the title to get the gist of this no-nonsense poem that shines a light on this dark, scandalous behavior. The inspiration came from him seeing Miguel transformed from a lost soul to a free spirit at a bus stop in South-Central Los Angeles. On the lighter side, you'll see what Keni is capable of producing when inspiration is off-duty and he's left to his own imagination. Busy Brains was penned in the middle of the night after lying in bed for hours, unable to turn off his thoughts long enough to go to sleep. The consolation was to turn a sleepless night into a fun & off-beat poem with an ending from Keni's distant, not-to-be-repeated past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "My Poetic Threads Create a Tapestry" accurately expresses how Author Carolyn June-Jackson envisions her poetry: a hand-woven embroidered tapestry stitched together with strands of imagery, realism, humorous, and inspirational parables in rhyme. She remembers the oppressed systemic racism during the 1950s and the volatile civil rights movement during the 1960s. These early memories influenced her to share her thoughts and feelings of racism and segregation through a black prism in her poetry. She doesn't see herself physically participating in marches but instead wields her pen as a form of protest against injustice. Her book is divided into six sections that feature the celebration, memorialization, and recognition of our ancestors, history, relationships, emotional issues, racism, and social and political issues that impact everyday lives.Carolyn June-Jackson grew up in an all-Black, closely-knit, well-established enclave sustained by black business owners and productive and caring residents from all walks of life in the Halls Hill community in North Arlington, Virginia, which was only eight miles from the District of Columbia. Carolyn began writing poetry in the early 1980s, and now she gets to share her gift with the world.

At a time of immense interest in biography, here is a unique set of keys to understanding the pattern and rhythms of your life. The unfolding phases of life are presented as the 'warp' of personal growth. You are invited to consider the 'shuttle' of the threads you use as the 'weft' of your life story. These threads include your temperament, gender, love, family, ethnicity, birth order, and developing relationships. A vivid picture of adult growth is presented. You can follow twelve very different people and their stories as they go through each life phase and wonder what will happen next. You can consider how you would respond to the choices they face. A diversity of themes − universal peace & harmony, social injustice, gender discrimination, freedom, beauty of nature, the power of self − are covered, etching out a philosophy of life that is at once deep, meaningful and profound, yet easily understood. How "Tapestry Poetry" works and the basic rules formulated by Avril and Shernaz have been clearly outlined in this book, thus giving the reader a fuller understanding of the weaving process and for those interested in experimenting in writing with this genre the opportunity to embark on an exciting poetic journey.

It's for this reason perhaps that the Master Weaver from time to time permits dark threads as well as colourful ones to be woven through the warp and weft of our lives. Often, it seems while looking at the back of our personal tapestries, the unfinished work as it were, that there is only a mass of tangled strands to be seen but then, when we meet with the Master Weaver, we get glimpses of the other side, His finished work and are thrilled to see a beautiful, purposeful, perfect pattern, where the dark and the burnished golds and shining silvers, interlaced through the weave, speak loudly of His mercy, grace and faithfulness .

Book Weaving Prayer into the Tapestry of Life

Download or read book Weaving Prayer into the Tapestry of Life written by Martha Graybeal Rowlett and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-06-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books are like visitors. They come and go. This book can be a long-term companion and assistant as you weave prayer into the tapestry of your life. Weaving Prayer Into the Tapestry of Life pictures each of us as a weaver at a loom, creating in every moment our lifes tapestry. The transformative thread of prayer is always available to be woven into our lifes design. In this weaving, we experience in wonder the creative presence of God. The chapters of this book gives an overview of Christian understanding and practice of prayer. The author combines Scripture, voices and sources from the tradition of the church, poetry, stories, and accounts of personal experience to explore ten of the most familiar ways Christians pray. These are: centering, praise, confession, meditative reading of Scripture, petition, intercession, dedication, silence, and benediction. Nine sets of Prayer Prompts, one with each chapter, invite you to move from thinking to doing. They provide a framework for personal devotion that includes all of the dimensions of Christian prayer discussed in the chapters. Resources from Scripture, prayers of the church, and contemporary materials offer structure and stimulus for expressing the prayers of your heart. These Prayer Prompts are adaptable for repeated use. Members of a prayer group or spiritual growth group may enjoy sharing experiences with this book. Martha Rowlett deeply understands Christian thinking, Christian living, Christian prayer, and, dare I say it, God. She shares her wisdom with utmost simplicity. Those who use her book will find themselves becoming better Christians. John Cobb, professor emeritus, Claremont School of Theology
