Book American Empire in Global History

Download or read book American Empire in Global History written by Shigeru Akita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the predominantly national focus that characterises studies of the United States after 1783 can be integrated with global trends, as viewed from the perspective of imperial history. The book also argues that historians of European empires have much to gain by considering the United States after 1783 as a newly-decolonised country that acquired overseas territorial possessions in 1898 and remained a member of the Western ‘imperial club’ until the mid-twentieth century. The wide-ranging synthesis by A. G. Hopkins, American Empire: A Global History (2018), provides the starting point for contributions that appraise its main theme and take it in new directions. The first three chapters identify fresh approaches to U.S. history between the Revolution and the Civil War, suggesting ways in which the United States can be considered as a newly-decolonised country, examining shifting meanings of the term ‘empire,’ and reassessing the character of continental expansion. The second group deals with initiatives and responses in the Philippines and Cuba, reconsidering the character of nationalism in two of the most important overseas territories that were either ruled directly or controlled indirectly by the United States, and placing it an international context. The third group examines the exercise of U.S. power in the twentieth century, identifying aspects of international law that have been overlooked and reviewing the extensive literature on the controversial themes of the Cold War and informal empire after 1945. The ten chapters in this edited volume bring together noted specialists on the history of international relations, the United States, and the insular empire it ruled in the twentieth century. The chapters were originally published as articles in a special issue of The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History.

Book Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics

Download or read book Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics written by Steffen Bo Jensen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics explores the notoriously brutal Philippine war on drugs from below. Steffen Bo Jensen and Karl Hapal examine how the war on drugs folded itself into communal and intimate spheres in one Manila neighborhood, Bagong Silang. Police killings have been regular occurrences since the birth of Bagong Silang. Communal Intimacy and the Violence of Politics shows that although the drug war was introduced from the outside, it fit into and perpetuated already existing gendered and generational structures. In Bagong Silang, the war on drugs implicated local structures of authority, including a justice system that had always been deeply integrated into communal relations. The ways in which the war on drugs transformed these intimate relations between the state and its citizens, and between neighbors, may turn out to be the most lasting impact of Duterte's infamously violent policies.

Book The Chinese Question

Download or read book The Chinese Question written by Caroline S. Hau and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rising strength of mainland China has spurred a revival of "Chineseness" in the Philippines. Perceived during the Cold War era as economically dominant, political disloyal, and culturally different, the "Chinese" presented themselves as an integral part of the Filipino imagined community. Today, as Filipinos seek associations with China, many of them see the local Chinese community as key players in East Asian regional economic development. With the revaluing of Chineseness has come a repositioning of "Chinese" racial and cultural identity. Philippine mestizos (people of mixed ancestry) form an important sub-group of the Filipino elite, but their Chineseness was occluded as they disappeared into the emergent Filipino nation. In the twentieth century, mestizos defined themselves and based claims to privilege on "white" ancestry, but mestizos are now actively reclaiming their "Chinese" heritage. At the same time, so-called "pure Chinese" are parlaying their connections into cultural, social, symbolic, or economic capital, and leaders of mainland Chinese state companies have entered into politico-business alliances with the Filipino national elite. As the meanings of "Chinese" and "Filipino" evolve, intractable contradictions are appearing in the concepts of citizenship and national belonging. Through an examination of cinematic and literary works, The Chinese Question shows how race, class, ideology, nationality, territory, sovereignty, and mobility are shaping the discourses of national integration, regional identification, and global cosmopolitanism.

Book Culture and Fertility

Download or read book Culture and Fertility written by Amelia B. Alfonso and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1980 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph is concerned with gaining an insight into the relationship between ethnic identity and population behaviour in the Philippines. Establishing the linkage between ethnic diversity and fertility differentials will have definite implications for population policies and programmes. This interest grows from the general recognition that such policies and programmes have often been planned and implemented on a national scale, with little consideration for ethnic diversity. While the relationship between ethnicity and fertility will not be directly studied or measured in this manuscript, inferences and hypotheses will be drawn from an integration of available literature on the various ethnic groups in the Philippines on the one hand and a review of relevant population data from existing surveys on the other.
