Lieh-tzu's teachings range from the origin and purpose of life, the Taoist view of reality, and the nature of enlightenment to the training of the body and mind, communication, and the importance of personal freedom. This distinctive translation presents Lieh-tzu as a friendly, intimate companion speaking directly to the reader in a contemporary voice about matters relevant to our everyday lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taoist Teachings From the Book of Lieh Tzü: Translated From the Chinese, With Introduction and Notes The history of Taoist philosophy may be conveniently divided into three stages: the primitive stage, the stage of development, and the stage of degeneration. The first of these stages is only known to us through the medium of a single semi-historical figure, the philosopher Lao Tzu, whose birth is traditionally assigned to the year 604 B.C. Some would place the beginnings of Taoism much earlier than this, and consequently regard Lao Tzu rather as an expounder than as the actual founder of the system; just as Confucianism - that is, a moral code based on filial piety and buttressed by altruism and righteousness - may be said to have flourished long before Confucius. The two cases, however, are somewhat dissimilar. The teachings of Lao Tzu, as preserved in the Tao Te Ching, are not such as one can easily imagine being handed down from generation to generation among the people at large. Book excerpt: Noted scholar and translator Lionel Tyler Giles offers his history and analysis of Taoism, an Eastern tradition which is variously termed philosophical and religious. The author's principal source is the founding text of Taoist thought; the Book of the Way - or Tao te Ching - by Lao Tzu. Though the book is considered of enormous importance to formalizing Taoism as a belief system, Giles finds that the moral tenets that comprise Taoist thought predate the birth of Lao Tzu by centuries. The possibility that Lao Tzu simply organized and discussed traits associated with the Tao is put to the reader, while common pitfalls for Westerners - for example, assuming that the Taoist 'Supreme Being' corresponds with the Christian God - are identified. Giles' enquiry serves as an introduction to a belief system which remains misunderstood even in the modern day. Determined to place Taoism in a wider context of Eastern wisdom, he examines the significance which Confucius held, alongside philosophical discussions of causality and destiny. Rather than being a separate entity, Taoism is demonstrated as being at the heart of ancient Eastern philosophy, with anecdotes and lessons deeply rooted in Chinese society of antiquity.

Book excerpt: History and legend are interwoven in this folk novel that both entertains and instructs. Written by an unknown author, Seven Taoist Masters is the story of six men and one woman who overcome tremendous hardships on the journey to self-mastery. These characters and their teacher, Wang Ch'ung-yang, are all historical figures who lived in the Southern Sung (1127–1279) and Yuan (1271–1368) dynasties. Wang is regarded as the greatest patriarch of the Complete Reality school, a highly purified branch of Taoism having a strong affinity with Zen Buddhism. The novel brings to life the essentials of Taoist philosophy and practice, both through the instructions offered by Wang—on topics such as the cultivation of mind and body, meditation techniques, and overcoming the obstacles to enlightenment—and through the experiences of the characters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compact collection of Taoism's greatest masterpieces introduces its most fundamental teachings and reveals the essential spirit of Tao. From the time of its earliest sages in prehistoric China, Taoism has looked to the underlying Way of all things (the Tao) as a guide to thoughts and actions. For the Taoists, the patterns of nature revealed the answers to their deepest spiritual questions and provided the inspiration for their unique teachings. Over the centuries, Taoism has blossomed into a profound tradition with a variety of forms--all united by a single, core philosophy of radical simplicity and natural living. Today, Taoism is most widely known through the Tao-te Ching, yet its corpus of literature is vast--ranging from philosophical dialogues and essays to astonishing fables, legends, proverbs, and more. This volume includes: Tao-te Ching: The foundational source of Taoist thought by the legendary Lao Tzu Chuang-tzu: Philosophical dialogues from one of Taoism's most famous sages Huai-nan-tzu: Teachings from the time of the Han dynasty on affairs of state, natural science, and Taoist psychology Wen-tzu: Records of further sayings by Lao Tzu on the art of living Tales of Inner Meaning: Fables, stories, and jokes from the Lieh-tzu and others on the subtleties of Taoist philosophy Sayings of Ancestor Lu: Teachings from Lu Yen, a seminal figure in the founding of the Complete Reality school of Taoism and master synthesizer of China's classic spiritual traditions

Book Tao The Way Special Edition

Download or read book Tao The Way Special Edition written by Lao Tzu and published by Special Edition Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lao Tzu was the father of Taoism. In his "Tao Te Ching," Lao Tzu outlined the basic concept of Tao. Chuang Tzu and Lieh Tzu were Lao Tzu's most important followers who expounded and expanded the basic principles set forth by Lao Tzu. Together, the sayings of these three sages, which make up this volume, are the foundations for the philosophy of Tao. The translations of the works of these ancient Chinese sages by Lionel Giles and Herbert Giles are very highly regarded and considered by many to be the definitive English translations. Lionel's translation of "The Sayings of Lao Tzu" (1905), taken from the "Tao Te Ching" and logically re-ordered, is remarkable for its clarity of expression, particularly given the complexity of the subject. Herbert's translation of "The Sayings of Chuang Tzu," presented here, with an introduction by Lionel, was originally published as "Musings of a Chinese Mystic" (1906). Lionel's translation of "The Sayings of Lieh Tzu" was originally published as "The Book of Lieh Tzu, or Teachings in Taoism" (1912). Individually the works of these Chinese sages are classics. Together, they are a master resource of the history of Tao.
