Book Prospects for the sectoral transformation of the rural economy in Tanzania A review of the evidence

Download or read book Prospects for the sectoral transformation of the rural economy in Tanzania A review of the evidence written by Benson, Todd and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To guide economy-wide modeling efforts to identify specific public investments under Tanzania’s second Agricultural Sector Development Programme (ASDP II), this report provides an analysis of the performance of the rural economy of mainland Tanzania over the period 2008 through 2015, with a focus on the agriculture sector. More broadly, we seek to assess the nature and extent of any structural transformation in the rural economy by understanding trends in various components of it. The insights gained will then be used in the economy-wide modeling work to propose portfolios of public investments to foster both agricultural development in the short term—in alignment with the ASDP-II—and, in the longer-term, a sectoral transformation of the rural economy in which far fewer households rely solely on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Book The Political Economy of Tanzania

Download or read book The Political Economy of Tanzania written by Michael F. Lofchie and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since gaining independence, the United Republic of Tanzania has enjoyed relative stability. More recently, the nation transitioned peacefully from "single-party democracy" and socialism to a multiparty political system with a market-based economy. But Tanzania's development strategies—based on the leading economic ideas at the time of independence—also opened the door for unscrupulous dealmaking among political elites and led to economic decline in the 1960s and 1970s that continues to be felt today. Indeed, the shift to a market-oriented economy was motivated in part by the fiscal interests of government profiteers. The Political Economy of Tanzania focuses on the nation's economic development from 1961 to the present, considering the global and domestic factors that have shaped Tanzania's economic policies over time. Michael F. Lofchie presents a compelling analysis of the successes and failures of a country whose postcolonial history has been deeply influenced by high-ranking members of the political elite who have used their power to advance their own economic interests. The Political Economy of Tanzania offers crucial lessons for scholars and policy makers with a stake in Africa's future.

Book Tanzanian Development

Download or read book Tanzanian Development written by Andrew Coulson and published by Eastern Africa. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date, comparative, examination of the developing economy of Tanzania and its grass roots progress out of poverty, with pointers to its wider implications for policymakers, NGOS and practitioners. Over the past thirty years, in common with a number of other Sub-Saharan African countries, Tanzania has experienced a period of painful adjustment followed by relatively rapid and stable economic growth. However the extent of progress on poverty reduction and the sustainability of the development process are both open to question. In this book, prominent international observers provide a range of different perspectives on the process of development over time and the issues facing a rapidly growing African economy: political economy; agriculture and rural livelihoods; industrial development; urbanisation; aid and trade; tourism; and the use of natural resources. Comparisons are drawn with other African economies as well as other developing countries, such as Vietnam. An invaluable deep review of Tanzania's economy and development, the book also looks at the wider implications of the research for the futureon the continent and beyond. David Potts is Honorary Visiting Researcher at the University of Bradford and was Head of the Bradford Centre for International Development 2015-16. He worked for six years as an economist in Tanzania's Ministry of Agriculture in the 1980s, has had many subsequent short-term assignments in the country and is co-editor of Development Planning and Poverty Reduction (2003).

Book Structural Adjustment Economic Performance and Aid Dependency in Tanzania

Download or read book Structural Adjustment Economic Performance and Aid Dependency in Tanzania written by Mr.Michael Mered and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1993-08-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tanzania’s adjustment program, which began in the mid-1980s, was accompanied by a sharp increase in the levels of foreign assistance. Previous studies, using published data, have not reflected much improvement in economic performance during the reform period. This paper attempts to shed new light on the relationship between adjustment and aid dependency in Tanzania, by adjusting the macroeconomic database to correct for data deficiencies in several important respects. A subsequent comparison with other sub-Saharan African countries shows that, contrary to traditional interpretation, Tanzania’s increased dependence on foreign assistance did not lead to a deterioration in domestic savings performance. Efficiency of investment, however, has been substantially lower in Tanzania.

Book The Tanzanian Economy

Download or read book The Tanzanian Economy written by Enos S. Bukuku and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1993 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first in-depth, theoretical and empirical study of Tanzanian income distribution and growth, this work pinpoints and critiques Tanzania's development strategy. Bukuku shows how changes in industry, agriculture, income, taxation and education impacted growth and distribution from 1967 to 1990. State policies disrupted markets, destroyed incentives and hurt growth and distribution, argues Bukuku. The result: deteriorated growth and increased income inequality. Bukuku recommends growth-oriented policies favoring the small farmers comprising most of Tanzania's population.

Book Africa s manufacturing puzzle Evidence from Tanzanian and Ethiopian firms

Download or read book Africa s manufacturing puzzle Evidence from Tanzanian and Ethiopian firms written by Diao, Xinshen and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent growth accelerations in Africa are characterized by increasing productivity in agriculture, a declining share of the labor force employed in agriculture and declining productivity in modern sectors such as manufacturing. To shed light on this puzzle, we disaggregate firms in the manufacturing sector by size using two newly created panels of manufacturing firms, one for Tanzania covering 2008-2016 and one for Ethiopia covering 1996-2017. Our analysis reveals a dichotomy between larger firms that exhibit superior productivity performance but do not expand employment much, and small firms that absorb employment but do not experience any productivity growth. We suggest the poor employment performance of large firms is related to use of capital-intensive techniques associated with global trends in technology.

Book The Second Economy in Tanzania

Download or read book The Second Economy in Tanzania written by T. L. Maliyamkono and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every country has its second, underground, unofficial, irregular or parallel economy. By their nature they are hidden and defy accurate and formal measurement. They provoke conceptual and definitional arguments among analysts. There has recently been a surge of interest; anecdote, newspaper reports and 'educated guesses' have increasingly been replaced by serious analysis. However, most of the new generation of studies are of developed economies. This book examines the effect on a developing economy. It explores the causes, identifies the key sectoral manifestations and reveals the various groups of actors. It attempts to establish the size of the second economy of Tanzania. Various factors drove the official economy into distress. Tanzanian peasants, wage earners and firms resorted to legitimate and illegitimate activities to overcome state control and shortage of basic necessities. This pioneering study will be invaluable for policy makers, international funding bodies and for students who are faced with trying to understand the realities of life behind the formal facade of economic theory and official statistics.
