Book excerpt: This book looks at the representations of modern war by analysing texts and examining the ways in which authors relate to the atrocious horrors of war. Rejecting the assumption that violence is simply a denial of reason or, at best, a pathological form of collective sadism, this book considers it ‘a cultural act’ that needs to be understood as underpinned by a series of shared and accepted norms and values stemming from a society at a given moment of its history and shaped by its language. Traditional vocabulary and language seem inadequate to describe soldiers’ experience of modern warfare. The problem for writers is to depict and render intelligible a dramatically unprecedented reality through recourse to something familiar. For some historians and literary critics, the absurdity of the First World War has shaped our ironic and disenchanted reading of the entire twentieth century. Yet these ways of coping with the urge to communicate inexpressible feelings and emotions in most cases are not sufficient to overcome the incoherence of the sentiments felt and the events witnessed. The contributors attempt to address the questions and issues that are posed by the highly ambiguous views, texts, and representations examined in this volume. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal European Review of History: Revue Européenne d’Histoire.

Book excerpt: By the mid-twelfth century the lands on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, from Finland to the frontiers of Poland, were Catholic Europe’s final frontier: a vast, undeveloped expanse of lowlands, forest and waters, inhabited by peoples belonging to the Finnic and Baltic language groups. In the course of the following three centuries, Finland, Estonia, Livonia and Prussia were incorporated into the Latin world through processes of conquest, Christianisation and settlement, and brought under the rule of Western monarchies and ecclesiastical institutions. Lithuania was left as the last pagan polity in Europe, yet able to accept Christianity on its own terms in 1386. The Western conquest of the Baltic lands advanced the frontier of Latin Christendom to that of the Russian Orthodox world, and had profound and long lasting effects on the institutions, society and culture of the region lasting into modern times. Book excerpt: The history of eastern European is dominated by the story of the rise of the Russian empire, yet Russia only emerged as a major power after 1700. For 300 years the greatest power in Eastern Europe was the union between the kingdom of Poland and the grand duchy of Lithuania, one of the longest-lasting political unions in European history. Yet because it ended in the late-eighteenth century in what are misleadingly termed the Partitions of Poland, it barely features in standard accounts of European history. The Making of the Polish-Lithuanian Union 1385-1569 tells the story of the formation of a consensual, decentralised, multinational, and religiously plural state built from below as much as above, that was founded by peaceful negotiation, not war and conquest. From its inception in 1385-6, a vision of political union was developed that proved attractive to Poles, Lithuanians, Ruthenians, and Germans, a union which was extended to include Prussia in the 1450s and Livonia in the 1560s. Despite the often bitter disagreements over the nature of the union, these were nevertheless overcome by a republican vision of a union of peoples in one political community of citizens under an elected monarch. Robert Frost challenges interpretations of the union informed by the idea that the emergence of the sovereign nation state represents the essence of political modernity, and presents the Polish-Lithuanian union as a case study of a composite state. The modern history of Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus cannot be understood without an understanding of the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian union. This volume is the first detailed study of the making of that union ever published in English.

Il fatto che la battaglia porti poi due nomi non fu un caso. Il luogo dove lo scontro si svolse era chiamato "collina degli abeti" (in tedesco Tannenberg), ma intorno ad esso c'era anche un bosco di alberi bassi, "il bosco verde" (in dialetto prussiano tedesco Grunnwald) ed un villaggio chiamato Grenfelde. La battaglia viene descritta in una "Chronica Conflictus" contenuta negli "Scriptores Rerum Prussicarum" e nelle "Historiae Poloniae" del canonico Jan Dlugosz. Questo prete ha conosciuto tutti i particolari che riporta nei suoi scritti dal padre, che aveva partecipato direttamente alla battaglia, oltre che da molti altri superstiti conosciuti e interrogati sfruttando le amicizie di suo padre. All'inizio del conflitto i Cavalieri erano riusciti a distruggere la destra dei lituani, ma successivamente dovettero gradualmente indietreggiare. Quando il loro coraggioso Gran Maestro Ulrich von Jungingen venne ucciso nel centro della mischia, la battaglia venne allora definitivamente persa. Oltre al Gran Maestro, i teutonici persero almeno 20.000 soldati e 200 cavalieri tra cui il Gran Commendatore Conrad von Liechtenstein, il maresciallo Friedrich von Wallenrod, e molti comandanti ed ufficiali, mentre i polacchi subirono 13.000 perdite fra morti e feriti.
