Based on extensive research and studies, the book explores the implications of our rising demand for petroleum and increase in tanker operations; U.S. government regulations and U.S. Coast Guard policies regarding designs for new tank vessel construction; how new ship design would affect crew safety, maintenance, inspection, and other technical issues; the prospects for retrofitting existing tankers to reduce the risk of oil spills; and more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite ongoing efforts to find alternatives, oil is still one of the most critical—and valuable—commodities on earth. This two-volume set provides extensive background information on key topics relating to oil, profiles countries that are major producers and consumers of oil, and examines relevant political issues. Aside from air and water, oil is perhaps the most valuable natural resource. Oil supplies the tremendous energy needs of the modern world. What exactly is "oil," where does it come from, how does it get consumed, and who is using it? This encyclopedia provides clear answers to these questions and more, offering students entries on the fundamentals of the oil industry and profiles of the countries that play a major role in oil production and consumption. Volume 1 presents topical entries on critical concepts, key terms, major oil spills and disasters, and important organizations and individuals relating to the oil industry. Entries define terms such as "barrel" and "reserve," cover incidents such as the BP oil spill, and explain the significance of organizations such as OPEC. The second volume spotlights specific countries that are major producers, consumers, exporters, and importers of oil, from the United States to Russia to Saudi Arabia to Venezuela. Each profile shows readers the importance of oil in that country through a brief background history, data on its oil usage or production, information about major trading partners, and an explanation of political issues.

Book Tankers in Trouble

Download or read book Tankers in Trouble written by Stig Tenold and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the causes and effects of the shipping market crisis in the 1970s and 1980s - the most severe of the twentieth century. It approaches the subject from three viewpoints. The first is the tanker sector, where the crisis began, spread, and caused the most damage. The second is from a national perspective - focusing on the impact on Norwegian shipping and shipowners. The third, narrowed further in scope, analyses the crisis from the business perspective of four individual tanker owners - taking into account their business strategies and eventual fates. The aim of the journal is to add to the knowledge of recent maritime history by examining the transformation of the industry during a period of rapid change. One distinct conclusion is that shipowners, to their detriment, assumed that the demand for tankers would continue to increase as it had consistently done so throughout the century thus far. The overall conclusion is that shipping is a cyclical industry, and that the oversupply of ships produced during the 1970s took its toll toward the end of the century. By 2004 and 2005, however, the industry began to bounce back, offering hope for the future. The book consists of an introductory chapter, seven chapters of analysis, a concluding chapter, select bibliography, and three appendices tabling Norwegian tanker statistics.

Book Breaking Ice for Arctic Oil

Download or read book Breaking Ice for Arctic Oil written by Ross Coen and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, an icebreaking tanker, the SS Manhattan, was commissioned by Humble Oil to transit the Northwest Passage in order to test the logistical and economic feasibility of an all-marine transportation system for Alaska North Slope crude oil. Proposed as an alternative to the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, the Manhattan made two voyages to the North American Arctic and collected volumes of scientific data on ice conditions and the behavior of ships in ice. Although the Manhattan successfully navigated the Northwest Passage—closing a five-hundred-year chapter of Arctic exploration by becoming the first commercial vessel to do so—the expedition ultimately demonstrated the impracticality of moving crude oil using icebreaking ships. Breaking Ice for Arctic Oil details this historic voyage, establishing its significant impact on the future of marine traffic and resource development in the Arctic and setting the stage for the current oil crisis.

Book Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster

Download or read book Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster written by John A. C. Cartner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book rethinks and rewrites the previous edition. It categorises simply the nine interactive legal duties of the shipmaster, analysing and relating them to laws and conventions within a single volume. Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster contends that command depends on decision-making, and that shipmasters are not provided sufficient, timely, relevant, and pertinent information for command decisions. The book proposes voyage planning follow the spacecraft model of the USA's National Aeronautics and Space Administration, providing readers with a metric for command. It constructively criticises the conventions and management and is aimed at reducing catastrophes by focusing on the hitherto elusive human factor in the shipmaster. Cartner proposes that command at sea be its own profession and discipline with those called to it specifically trained in its intricacies; he argues that current ships are not designed to be command-worthy or security-worthy and that management should reorder its relationships with shipmasters as tactical managers afloat. The insights the book provides are an invaluable aid to decision making for the modern civil commander and anyone association with this pivotal and essential profession. This book is a necessary reference and guide for shipmasters, technologists, naval architects, regulators, underwriters, students, practitioners and courts of maritime law and command worldwide.
