Download or read book Audible Empire written by Ronald Radano and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audible Empire rethinks the processes and mechanisms of empire and shows how musical practice has been crucial to its spread around the globe. Music is a means of comprehending empire as an audible formation, and the contributors highlight how it has been circulated, consumed, and understood through imperial logics. These fifteen interdisciplinary essays cover large swaths of genre, time, politics, and geography, and include topics such as the affective relationship between jazz and cigarettes in interwar China; the sonic landscape of the U.S.– Mexico border; the critiques of post-9/11 U.S. empire by desi rappers; and the role of tonality in the colonization of Africa. Whether focusing on Argentine tango, theorizing anticolonialist sound, or examining the music industry of postapartheid South Africa, the contributors show how the audible has been a central component in the creation of imperialist notions of reason, modernity, and culture. In doing so, they allow us to hear how empire is both made and challenged. Contributors: Kofi Agawu, Philip V. Bohlman. Michael Denning, Brent Hayes Edwards, Nan Enstad, Andrew Jones, Josh Kun, Morgan Luker, Jairo Moreno, Tejumola Olaniyan, Marc Perry, Ronald Radano, Nitasha Sharma, Micol Seigel, Gavin Steingo, Penny Von Eschen, Amanda Weidman.

Download or read book Stone Cold Mental written by Jeff Stone and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stone Cold Mental Volume I In this series I'll share with you my personal collection of mentalism I've built up over the past decade and a half or so. The 13 items to follow are just a small sample of what's to come. All of this material has never been published anywhere prior to this series. In this first volume, you'll find ten effects in a few different categories, namely ESP, tarot, "time", bizarre, and "luck". Plus 3 bonus ideas including an effect specifically for magicians as well as a utility idea, and a fun presentational idea for your stand up/stage show. Also included you'll find 8 QR Codes with links to video footage, a secret website, and a whole bunch of other stuff! Step inside and join me on the journey to de-boring-ify your mentalism. Why be boring when you can be Stone Cold Mental! Inevitability A prediction is openly placed on the table. The spectator truly shuffles a packet of ESP cards then (without the mentalist ever touching the packet) deals them out on to the table stopping whenever they want. The prediction, of course, is correct. The spectator's choice is truly a free choice. Extra Sensory Pendulum The mentalist finds the spectator's thought of ESP card with a pendulum. Then the spectator finds the mentalist's thought of ESP card using a pendulum. The spectator truly has a free thought of ESP card. There is no force. Torched Tarot What follows is a very powerful moment of wonder. This will be a true connecting moment with your "spectator." The fact is, that this is more meant for a private one-on-one meeting with the spectator as a "sitter" and you as a "reader." This truly is very scary-powerful. Please, please, use it wisely and responsibly. Nightmarot The haruspex predicts a thought of tarot card in just about the creepiest way possible. Don't worry, no entrails or sacrificed animals were involved. The Persistence of Time One spectator reveals the merely thought of hour of another spectator. Time Enough at Last This effect is the same as the preceding effect. However, rather than drawings of clocks, actual watches are used, and the presentation is quite a bit different and has an overall different kind of vibe. Hotel Hell The key to the hotel room of a serial killer is shown to have a spiritual connection to the murderer causing a fireball to appear from nowhere, and other super creepy things. The Purge A voodoo doll wrapped in a cloth is seen to move. Then a pin appears in the voodoo doll at the exact place chosen by the spectator. Bone Count A spectator secretly chooses a number on a die. Another spectator chooses 1 of 6 facedown cards (i.e., one for each number on a die). The card chosen matches the number on the die. As a kicker, the other cards are shown to be completely blank. No equivoque. LOST Lottery The mental mind manipulator is able to hear the thoughts of the piqued participants as they think of some lottery numbers.
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion written by Pooyan Tamimi Arab and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Material Religion places objects and bodies at the center of scholarly studies of religious life and practice. Propelling forward the study of material religion, the Handbook first reveals the deep philosophical roots of its key categories and then advances new critical analytics, such as queer materialities, inescapable material entanglements, and hyperobjects that explode the small-scale personal view on religions. The Handbook comprises thirty chapters, written by an international team of contributors who offer a global perspective of religious pasts and presents, divided into four thematic parts: Genealogies of Material Religion Materializing the Terms of the Study of Religion Entanglements, Entrapment, Escaping Hyperobjects, or How Ginormous Things Affect Religions In these four parts, the study of material religion is redirected towards systematic, critical interrogations of the imbrication of religious structures of power with racial, economic, political, and gendered forms of domination. From Spinoza’s political theology to African philosophies of ubuntu; from the queer materialities of Mesoamerican religion to the Satanic Temple of the United States; from Islamic love and sacrifice in human-animal entanglements to Shia militants’ attachment to weaponry; from epidemic cataclysm in Latin America to vast infrastructures and the gathering of millions in India’s Kumbh Mela, the study of material religion proves to be the study par excellence of the human condition. The Handbook is essential reading for students and researchers in religious studies, anthropology, history, and media studies, and will also be of interest to those in related fields such as archeology, sociology, and philosophy.

Download or read book Abracadabra written by David Kranes and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abracadabra is a fantastical and inventive addition to the tradition of noir writing, which not only delights and surprises at every turn but also raises important questions about identity, the human condition, the nature of evil, and the state of the union. The novel begins with a mystery, when Mark Goodson, a seemingly well-adjusted married man, disappears during a magic act, precipitating a series of events, encounters, and seemingly inexplicable occurrences, which it falls to a former professional football player, Elko Wells, to weave together into a story that is at once compelling and true. The concussion that ended Wells’ playing career left him open to hearing voices and discerning patterns of meaning helpful to his work as the owner of a missing-persons agency. He also owns a celebrity look-alike agency, which complicates matters in humorous ways, and his reliance on a string of cocktail waitresses called the Bloody Marys who are on the lookout for various people adds another level of intrigue. Magicians and misdirection, gambling, down-on-one’s-luck, the crazed sense of possibility and impossibility, mistaken identity, impersonators and body doubles, people acting bizarrely with all sorts of chaos, collisions, and overlaps thrown in for good measure. Again and again the reader is swept into treacherous waters, always confident that the writer is in control of his material. Because the many twists and turns the plot takes are all but impossible to anticipate, the experience of reading Abracadabra is deliciously magical.

Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig "This book does what no other playwriting book in my experience has done, it offers a new way of seeing and conceiving how theatre makes meaning and carries emotional impact in performance." Suzan Zeder, Professor Emerita and former Head Of Playwriting at University of Texas at Austin, USA Combining a step-by-step analysis of the technique of writing for stage and screen with how the mystery, poetry, and emotional momentum is achieved for the audience, Sherry Kramer offers an empowering, original guide for emerging and established writers. In this structured look at the way audience members progress through a work in real time, Sherry Kramer uses plain-spoken vocabulary to help you discover how to make work that will mean more to your audiences. The book also features multiple exercises, developed with MFA writers in The Iowa Playwrights Workshop and The Michener Center for Writers, where Kramer taught for the past 25 years, which provide entrance points to help you consider and create your work.
