Download or read book There Was Nothing You Could Do written by Steven Hyden and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thought-provoking exploration of Bruce Springsteen’s iconic album, Born in the U.S.A.—a record that both chronicled and foreshadowed the changing tides of modern America On June 4, 1984, Columbia Records issued what would become one of the best-selling and most impactful rock albums of all time. An instant classic, Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. would prove itself to be a landmark not only for the man who made it, but rock music in general and even the larger American culture over the next 40 years. In There Was Nothing You Could Do, veteran rock critic Steven Hyden shows exactly how this record became such a pivotal part of the American tapestry. Alternating between insightful criticism, meticulous journalism, and personal anecdotes, Hyden delves into the songs that made—and didn’t make—the final cut, including the tracks that wound up on its sister album, 1982’s Nebraska. He also investigates the myriad reasons why Springsteen ran from and then embraced the success of his most popular (and most misunderstood) LP, as he carefully toed the line between balancing his commercial ambitions and being co-opted by the machine. But the book doesn’t stop there. Beyond Springsteen’s own career, Hyden explores the role the album played in a greater historical context, documenting not just where the country was in the tumultuous aftermath of Vietnam and Watergate, but offering a dream of what it might become—and a perceptive forecast of what it turned into decades later. As Springsteen himself reluctantly conceded, many of the working-class middle American progressives Springsteen wrote about in 1984 had turned into resentful and scorned Trump voters by the 2010s. And though it wasn’t the future he dreamed of, the cautionary warnings tucked within Springsteen’s heartfelt lyrics prove that the chaotic turmoil of our current moment has been a long time coming. How did we lose Springsteen’s heartland? And what can listening to this prescient album teach us about the decline of our country? In There Was Nothing You Could Do, Hyden takes readers on a journey to find out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A woman’s former life as a radical antiwar protestor threatens her new identity as a wife and mother in this “poignant and stirring novel” (Booklist). While reluctantly accompanying her husband and daughter to freshman orientation at Indiana University, Nora Quillen hears someone call her name—her real name—a name she has not heard in more than twentyfive years. Not even her husband knows that back in the ‘60s she was Jane Barth, a student deeply involved in the antiwar movement. Now Jane, and her radical past, are about to come into the light. Shuttling between the present day and the turbulent 1960s, An American Tune tells the story of Jane, a girl from a working-class family who flees when she becomes complicit in a deadly bombing, and Nora, the woman she becomes: a wife and mother living a quiet life in northern Michigan. An American Tune is both a poignant story of a family crushed under the weight of suppressed truths, and an evocation of a country struggling with its own violent legacy.

Download or read book Madonna Song by Song written by Marc Andrews and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2022-03-28 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a career full of ‘blond ambition’, with controversy never far away, the music of Madonna has often been overshadowed, if not sorely overlooked. Across 14 albums, soundtracks and numerous greatest hits collections, the undisputed Queen of Pop has released over 80 singles spanning five decades. In this book every released track from her extensive back catalogue is examined in detail, with new insights, revelations and video information. Her role as ‘Queen of Clubs’ is also duly acknowledged, making careful note of the important remixes that have helped her rule the dance floor after her first release 40 years ago in 1982, ‘Everybody’, got her firmly into the groove. From 1984’s shiny and new ‘Like A Virgin’, to the critical acclaim of 1989’s expressive ‘Like A Prayer’ and 1998’s enlightening ‘Ray of Light’, from soundtrack work for ‘Dick Tracy’ and ‘Evita’, to collaborations with superstars Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Dua Lipa, this truly strikes a pose for any fan of the ‘Material Girl’ aka ‘Madame X’. ‘Madonna: Song By Song’ reclaims her stature as not just one of the greatest pop artists ever, but also as songwriter/producer of some of the biggest selling and most memorable songs of all time.

Download or read book Music Business and Monkey Business written by Doug McGuire and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is how simple the complicated music business can be! I was sitting "shooting the bull" with the A&R man at Epic Records one day. He said, "You know what I would really like to find is a white kid that sings the blues like a black guy." I said, "I know a kid like that," or words to that effect. I then told him what I knew about Tim Williams. Tim was starving to death trying to run a Coffee House in Santa Barbara. He was only nineteen-years old, but very good. The problem was that I had no idea what to do with a Blues singer. Suddenly there was an answer to the question. The A&R man said, "Bring him down!" which meant to his office in Hollywood. When the day came to go to Hollywood we went in my car. I didn't think he had one that would make it down and back. He showed up in a pair of dark brown corduroy pants and a dark polo-type shirt, both clean, but covered with white lint. I was embarrassed to "showcase" him that way, but it could have been a sensitive subject so away we went. I didn't have a clue what to expect when we arrived at the office. In the now familiar get-to-the-point fashion the man said, "Let's hear something" after a few minutes of visiting. Tim opened his guitar case, took out his twelve string guitar and began playing as if the outcome didn't make a damn bit of difference to him. Mr. A&R man asked him to do some old standard, then something original that Tim had written. Then suddenly he said, "Sounds good, let's do a thing, make a record!" Just like that!

Download or read book Talk to Her written by Kristine McKenna and published by Fantagraphics Books. This book was released on 2004-08-18 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kristine McKenna's work as a journalist began in the late 1970s, when she covered the Los Angeles punk scene for various domestic and international publications. During the '80s and '90s she wrote art, film and music criticism, and profiled directors, musicians and visual artists for a variety of publications including Artforum, Playboy, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and New York Rocker. Talk to Her is McKenna's second collection (the first was 1999's Book of Changes) of favorite interviews culled from McKenna's files, and the book reveal's McKenna's highly intimate technique as an interviewer. That she manages to get such candor out of her subjects is remarkable. The stunning list of interview subjects includes: Filmmaker Robert Altman; Jackie Onassis's cousin Edie Beale; punk rocker and poet Exene Cervenka; the musician Elvis Costello; surf guitar legend Dick Dale; the postmodern critic Jacques Derrida; Beat poet Allen Ginsberg; Television's Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine; art curator Walter Hopps; Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde; country music legend Rickie Lee Jones; the Sex Pistols' John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten); singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell; the Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man; punk rock legend Joey Ramone; New York rock legend Lou Reed; the actress Eva Marie Saint; and the recently-departed Joe Strummer of the Clash. Also included are brief oral histories of Andy Warhol and Orson Welles.
