Download or read book Who Will Lament Her written by Laurel Lanner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-05-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not surprising that non-academic bible readers largely ignore Nahum. Comprising only a few pages, it is easily overlooked in the midst of the twelve Minor Prophets. When a reader does stop in passing, the book appears to be brief, brutish, and uncomfortably violent. Looking more closely, however, readers may observe echoes of other much greater prophets, such as Isaiah and Ezekiel, perhaps even of the Psalms, and conclude that the book is a rather second-rate pastiche of other writings, although some rather brilliant poetry is woven into it. Who Will Lament Her? takes a fresh look at Nahum. It explores further the presence of the feminine in the book of Nahum, the extent to which it is present in the text, how the structure of the text makes the feminine both present and absent, and the possible reasons why this is so. Lanner takes two methodological approaches. The first sets out to show that it is possible that a feminine deity is present in the text of Nahum. The second approach engages three theories of the literary fantastic with the text, taking into consideration the findings of the historical and exegetical work. Using these two approaches hand in hand results in a fresh reading of Nahum.

Book excerpt: Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Named a Best of Book of the Year by The Economist and Foreign Affairs Los Angeles Times Book Prize Finalist The Dadaab refugee camp is many things: to the charity workers, it’s a humanitarian crisis; to the Kenyan government, a “nursery for terrorists”; to the Western media, a dangerous no-go area. But to its half a million residents, it’s their last resort. Situated hundreds of miles from any other settlement, deep within the inhospitable desert of northern Kenya where only thorn bushes grow, Dadaab is a city like no other. Its buildings are made from mud, sticks, or plastic. Its entire economy is grey. And its citizens survive on rations and luck. Over the course of four years, Ben Rawlence became a firsthand witness to a strange and desperate place, getting to know many of those who had come seeking sanctuary. Among them are Guled, a former child soldier who lives for football; Nisho, who scrapes an existence by pushing a wheelbarrow and dreaming of riches; Tawane, the indomitable youth leader; and Kheyro, a student whose future hangs upon her education. In City of Thorns, Rawlence interweaves the stories of nine individuals to show what life is like in the camp, sketching the wider political forces that keep the refugees trapped. Lucid, vivid, and illuminating, City of Thorns is an urgent human story with deep international repercussions, brought to life through the people who call Dabaab home.

Download or read book The Acadian Prairie Theodule written by Christopher J. Fontenot and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Acadian Prairie by Christopher J. Fontenot Tugged and shoved by the winds of war, the petit habitants of the Acadian prairie arrived from many directions. Acadians arrived from Nova Scotia. Other families migrated to the prairie after the French and Indian War. All of the settlers sought land and isolation that shielded them from the intemperate affairs of European kings. The Acadian prairie provided both. Farmers and ranchers, Theodule Dupré, Emile Ortego, the Landrys, Frugés, and the traiteuse Olivia wanted only to be left in peace, but peace is not given freely. Death was always near, whether it was vigilantes and cattle thieves, storms and epidemics, or Jayhawkers operating in the chaos of the Civil War, they had to fight for what was theirs – sometimes even fight their own families. Connected by family and circumstance, theirs was a saga that would follow their families through generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays offers an inquiry into the complex interaction between exegesis and poetry that characterized medieval and early modern Karaite and Rabbanite treatment of the Bible in the Islamic world, the Byzantine Empire, and Christian Europe. Discussing a variety of topics that are usually associated with either exegesis or poetry in conjunction with the two fields, the authors analyze a wide array of interactions between biblical sources and their interpretive layers, whether in prose exegesis or in multiple forms of poetry and rhymed prose. Of particular relevance are mechanisms for the production and transmission of exegetical traditions, including the participation of Jewish poets in these processes, an issue that serves as a leitmotif throughout this collection.
