Book Tangible Whispers Neglected Encounters

Download or read book Tangible Whispers Neglected Encounters written by Marco Musillo and published by Mimesis. This book was released on 2019-02-01T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between East and West remains a topic of burning timeliness, particularly in its political dimension. Yet, we can gain a complete understanding of the current tensions only if we consider them within a broader historical framework, spanning from art to diplomacy, from religion to ethnography. The present volume tackles precisely this complex task, offering its reader a rich mosaic of case studies and scholarly research, relating to the mutual approaches between the Euro-American ‘West’, and the Sino-Japanese ‘East’. In the first part of the book, art historian Marco Musillo uses the depictions of Tartars in fourteenth-century Italian frescoes as the starting point of a trajectory leading to eighteenth-century European literature on China. In the second part, the reader is introduced to two cases of diplomatic encounter, one in sixteenth-century Italy between Japanese subjects and local courts, and the other one between Qing China and twentieth-century United States, in the space of the universal exhibition in St. Louis. Finally, the last section proposes three interconnected art historical explorations: the screen design of Chinese origin in colonial Mexico, Medieval Christian tombstones in China, and early-modern Filipino sacred sculpture.

Book Art Mobility and Exchange in Early Modern Tuscany and Eurasia

Download or read book Art Mobility and Exchange in Early Modern Tuscany and Eurasia written by Francesco Freddolini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the Medici Grand Dukes pursued ways to expand their political, commercial, and cultural networks beyond Europe, cultivating complex relations with the Ottoman Empire and other Islamicate regions, and looking further east to India, China, and Japan. The chapters in this volume discuss how casting a global, cross-cultural net was part and parcel of the Medicean political vision. Diplomatic gifts, items of commercial exchange, objects looted at war, maritime connections, and political plots were an inherent part of how the Medici projected their state on the global arena. The eleven chapters of this volume demonstrate that the mobility of objects, people, and knowledge that generated the global interactions analyzed here was not unidirectional—rather, it went both to and from Tuscany. In addition, by exploring evidence of objects produced in Tuscany for Asian markets, this book reveals hitherto neglected histories of how Western cultures projected themselves eastwards.

This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, competing European empires, notably Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and others vied for commercial and political control of transoceanic networks, particularly the transpacific routes between Asia and the Americas. The essays in Transpacific Engagements: Trade, Translation, and Visual Culture of Entangled Empires (1565–1898) address the resulting cultural and artistic exchanges with an emphasis on both the Spanish and American enterprises in the Asia-Pacific region. The essays are grouped into three parts entitled “Entangled Empires,” “Empires and Translations,” and “Empires and Trade.” A common thread in the diverse perspectives presented here is the importance of transpacific engagements to the global connections of the sixteenth century and beyond. While the focus is on the specific connection between the Asia-Pacific region and the Americas through the Philippines, we see how other parts of the world, notably South and Southeast Asia and Europe, were also participants impacted by these transpacific linkages. The goal is to convey the complexity of entangled networks of commercial, political, and religious interests that complicate the Spanish enterprise in the Pacific. Commercial ventures into Canton and Manila by the early American republic, for example, overlapped with and later replaced the Spanish galleons. East, South, and Southeast Asian polities and dynasties remained powerful players in what were often multilateral, rather than bilateral, exchanges. Contributors to this volume are based in Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

Book Iconotropy and Cult Images from the Ancient to Modern World

Download or read book Iconotropy and Cult Images from the Ancient to Modern World written by Jorge Tomás García and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines the process of symbolic and material alteration of religious images in antiquity, the middle ages and the modern period. The process by which the form and meaning of images are modified and adapted for a new context is defined by a large number of spiritual, religious, artistic, geographical or historical circumstances. This book provides a defined theoretical framework for these symbolic and material alterations based on the concept of iconotropy; that is, the way in which images change and/or alter their meaning. Iconotropy is a key concept in religious history, particularly for periods in which religious changes, often turbulent, took place. In addition, the iconotropic process of appropriating cult images brought with it changes in the materiality of those images. Numerous accounts from antiquity, the middle ages and the modern period detail how cult images were involved in such processes of misinterpretation, both symbolically and materially. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture and religious history.

Book Christianity and Confucianism

Download or read book Christianity and Confucianism written by Christopher Hancock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity and Confucianism: Culture, Faith and Politics, sets comparative textual analysis against the backcloth of 2000 years of cultural, political, and religious interaction between China and the West. As the world responds to China's rise and China positions herself for global engagement, this major new study reawakens and revises an ancient conversation. As a generous introduction to biblical Christianity and the Confucian Classics, Christianity and Confucianism tells a remarkable story of mutual formation and cultural indebtedness. East and West are shown to have shaped the mind, heart, culture, philosophy and politics of the other - and far more, perhaps, than either knows or would want to admit. Christopher Hancock has provided a rich and stimulating resource for scholars and students, diplomats and social scientists, devotees of culture and those who pursue wisdom and peace today.

Book excerpt: In summary: Although "Whispers of Oblivion" is a story that plunges readers into a realm of despair and darkness, it also illuminates courageous, friendship, and self-realization with an unwavering brilliance. The enthralling narrative centers on Lily, a diminutive child whose routine existence is abruptly disrupted when she discovers a concealed chamber amidst the forest. Her unanticipated revelation transports her to an alternate realm characterized by obscurity and ominous rumblings of mortality. By her side as she enters this malevolent reality is Max, her devoted dog. It is a perilous and arduous voyage that challenges her bravery and determination. The bond between Max and Lily becomes more profound as they traverse this unfamiliar terrain, demonstrating Max's steadfast allegiance and companionship. Collectively, they endure numerous tribulations that symbolize Lily's inner conflicts and compel her to confront her fears and insecurities. Throughout the narrative, Lily is confronted with a succession of internal adversaries, each of which functions as a symbolic representation of the internal turmoil she experiences. Lily is driven to the verge of despair as a result of these non-physical, emotional, and psychological exchanges. Nevertheless, it is precisely by enduring these challenges that Lily gains a comprehensive understanding of her resilience and the strength of her resolve to confront hardship directly. By skillfully interweaving themes of light and darkness, courage and fear, pessimism and optimism, the novel captivates readers and draws them into Lily's transformative voyage. Lily gains profound insights into the transformative potential of love and companionship, the significance of acknowledging one's concerns, and the necessity of confronting the darkness that exists both internally and externally. At last, "Whispers of Oblivion" recounts a tale of success in the face of hardship. Lily's return from the precipice of despair is symbolic in nature, given the irreparable transformation she has undergone as a result of her experiences. A newfound sense of fortitude and resilience, along with a fresh outlook on the world and herself, enable her to successfully navigate challenging situations in the future. This narrative is a sobering reminder that even in the darkest of circumstances, light can be discovered, and that perseverance, friendship, and self-confidence are our greatest allies when facing adversity. Beyond being merely Lily's story, "Whispers of Oblivion" is a universal parable that inspires and motivates readers through its profound emotional impact and inspiration of the human spirit's unwavering determination to endure. Chapter 1: The Secret Room is the subject. A secluded area existed within a small village surrounded by towering hills and trees that seemed to be divulging undisclosed information, and it was virtually recognized by all. Underneath the dense forest, vegetation and roots obscured the entrance to this one-of-a-kind location. An even smaller number of individuals were cognizant of its existence, and even fewer possessed the courage to confront it. On a bright and gorgeous day, Lily, a daring child, discovered this hidden area while playing in the woods with her dog, Max. Lily was insatiably inquisitive and delighted in the pursuit of new knowledge. Upon noticing an anomaly—a concealed entrance adorned with vegetation—she was enticed to investigate further. "What do you think, Max?" she asked gently, her anxious eyes fixed on her devoted canine companion, who trembled slightly as if he detected something unsettling within. As she was anxious to learn more, Lily, on the other hand, disregarded Max's concerns. She was both slightly frightened and dizzy with exhilaration, but in a good way. Unbeknownst to her, unlocking that door would initiate the most extraordinary experience of her life—an event she had previously merely envisioned. Lily and Max uncover a mystery and embark on an exciting voyage in this narrative. It is about how audacity and inquisitiveness can result in astounding revelations, even if they are initially unsettling. The revelation made by Lily in the forest establishes the atmosphere for a narrative replete with allure, challenges, and the sort of exploits that are typically depicted in literature or cinema. This serves as a poignant reminder that, much like Lily's expedition into the concealed chamber in the forest, extraordinary tales frequently commence with a humble venture into uncharted territory. Chapters 2: The Gateway Within a tale of enchantment and adventure, a valiant young lady named Lily made a remarkable revelation. While exploring a concealed passageway entwined with vegetation, she encountered a singular and exquisite stone pedestal positioned in the precise center of the vicinity. An even more remarkable abode graced this pedestal was a doorway illuminated by a radiance seemingly emanating from an extraterrestrial source. Lily queried herself, "What is this?" with wide-eyed curiosity and a hint of concern. Like a firefly to a flame, she was enticed towards the glistening gateway and could not resist reaching out to touch it. As she prepared to touch it with her fingers, she was admonished in a soft voice to proceed with extreme prudence. However, Lily's fascination significantly overcame her apprehension. Uncertainty surrounded the exploits that greeted her beyond the portal. She posed the inquiry. Lily approached the entrance without heeding the admonition. In one instance, everything around her changed. She experienced an eerie pull, as if the portal were transporting her to an entirely different location, far from the hiding chamber and the woodlands. An iridescent, brilliant light encircled her. Imagine the sensation of being abruptly enveloped in a maelstrom of luminosity and color, which surpasses your previous perception of speed and transports you to an unexplored location. That is precisely what took place regarding Lily. She momentarily lost sight of the woods beyond, her canine companion Max, and the room in which she was presently situated. The sole remnants were the illumination and the feeling of being propelled to an unfamiliar and unfamiliar setting.

Book Elemental Encounters in the Contemporary Irish Novel

Download or read book Elemental Encounters in the Contemporary Irish Novel written by Claire McGrail Johnston and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The underlying premise of this book is that reading is touching. Words leap out of their beds and pierce flesh like a knife. Storytelling breathes within the dynamic of encounters with air, fire, earth and water, permeated by emotion, imagination and touch. These ideas are contextualized within ancient community rituals, social justice gatherings, pedagogical practices, and map-making. The four elements are retrieved from exile as imaginative, corporeal, and generative substances that operate within stories like medicine bundles. Reading becomes a Deleuzian ‘enterprise of health’, a challenging experience that grasps Paulo Freire’s generative themes, and is simultaneously thought-provoking and valuable. The capacious literary space capable of housing this sensual ferment is the novel. More verb than noun, the novel is an elemental bundle that engages with flesh in all its manifestations. This book spotlights Irish novels by John Banville and Mary Morrissy, exploring how they revitalise the elements with sensual, social, and tactile textures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the middle of the twentieth century, visual art has displayed an ambivalent nature, torn between the poles of abstractionism and realism, conceptual and postmodern, classicist nostalgia and the violent provocation for its own sake. This essay builds an argument in favor of tracing a different path for the visual arts, in which art might be able to recover its fullness and universality. The artists analyzed in this volume – starting with Hopper and Balthus, singled out as precursors – appear to be following this shared path, even though they belong to different generations. Only very recently we have witnessed the emergence of a radical change of perspective, which refounds our notions of aesthetics: according to Vitale, there exists a timeless dimension of art that can only emerge from the work itself, from special techniques where opposite elements become reconciled. As in the art of Ancient Greece or the Middle Ages, as well as of more remote and exotic cultures, abstract tensions that intensify the visual fi eld can bring simple fi gures to life, radically changing their meaning. Akin to the Medieval scholastics’ claritas, this is a “sunniness”: we’ll have to undertake a tireless process of exercising our perceptions, if we wish to be able to grasp its basic aesthetic quality and overcome the narrow historicism that dominated the twentieth century.
