Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tangential Views Man is gradually but surely los ing the sense of smell through disuse. It is a fact that we have noses less keen than the savages; which is well for us, for we have a dozen well-defined and several bad odors to their one. It 18 possible, indeed, that It Is to the alarming prevalence Of bad odors that our olfactory inferiority is in some degree due: civilized man's habit of holding his nose has begotten in that organ an Obedi ent habit of holding itself. This by the way, leaves both his hands free to hold his tongue, though as a rule he prefers to make another and less pleasing use of them. With a nose dowered with primitive activity civil ized man would find it difficult to retain his supremacy over the forces of Nature; her as sassinating odors would engage him in a new Struggle for existence, incomparably more. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book The Ferns Filicales Treated Comparatively with a View to Their Natural Classification Vol 1

Download or read book The Ferns Filicales Treated Comparatively with a View to Their Natural Classification Vol 1 written by Frederick Orpen Bower and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ferns (Filicales) Treated Comparatively With a View to Their Natural Classification, Vol. 1: Analytical Examination of the Criteria of Comparison Little do ye know your own blessedness; for to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour. R. L. Stevenson, Essay on El Dorado. IN this passage Stevenson enunciates a truth that applies with singular force to those who enter on morphological enquiry. To travel hopefully is the chosen pursuit of all who study large groups of organisms with a view to reducing them to order, so as to throw light on their origin and evolution. In such quests no one need expect under present conditions to arrive at the final destination of complete and assured knowledge. If any one should indulge this hope his disappointment is certain. Even if he did so arrive, and found himself able fully to demonstrate the whole truth, how greatly would the quest lose in its interest. It is in the pursuit of his El Dorado of evolutionary history, not in the arrival there, that the true blessedness of the morphologist lies. It behoves then those who travel on this journey not to hurry unduly, but to consider with critical care the manner of their journeying, rather than to seek short cuts to an elusive goal. Book Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision

Download or read book Multiple View Geometry in Computer Vision written by Richard Hartley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-25 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic problem in computer vision is to understand the structure of a real world scene given several images of it. Techniques for solving this problem are taken from projective geometry and photogrammetry. Here, the authors cover the geometric principles and their algebraic representation in terms of camera projection matrices, the fundamental matrix and the trifocal tensor. The theory and methods of computation of these entities are discussed with real examples, as is their use in the reconstruction of scenes from multiple images. The new edition features an extended introduction covering the key ideas in the book (which itself has been updated with additional examples and appendices) and significant new results which have appeared since the first edition. Comprehensive background material is provided, so readers familiar with linear algebra and basic numerical methods can understand the projective geometry and estimation algorithms presented, and implement the algorithms directly from the book.

Book The Book of Why

Download or read book The Book of Why written by Judea Pearl and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Turing Award-winning computer scientist and statistician shows how understanding causality has revolutionized science and will revolutionize artificial intelligence "Correlation is not causation." This mantra, chanted by scientists for more than a century, has led to a virtual prohibition on causal talk. Today, that taboo is dead. The causal revolution, instigated by Judea Pearl and his colleagues, has cut through a century of confusion and established causality -- the study of cause and effect -- on a firm scientific basis. His work explains how we can know easy things, like whether it was rain or a sprinkler that made a sidewalk wet; and how to answer hard questions, like whether a drug cured an illness. Pearl's work enables us to know not just whether one thing causes another: it lets us explore the world that is and the worlds that could have been. It shows us the essence of human thought and key to artificial intelligence. Anyone who wants to understand either needs The Book of Why.

Book excerpt: "Friendships are built on chatter, on gossip, on revelations--on talk. Over the course of the summer of 1965, Linda Rosenkrantz taped conversations between three friends (two straight, one gay) on the cusp of thirty vacationing at the beach: Emily, an actor; Vince, a painter; and Marsha, a writer. The result was Talk, a novel in dialogue. The friends are ambitious, conflicted, jealous, petty, loving, funny, sex- and shrink-obsessed, and there's nothing they won't discuss. Topics covered include LSD, fathers, exes, lovers, abortions, S&M, sculpture, books, cats, and of course, each other. Talk was ahead of its time in recognizing the fascination and significance of nonfamily ties in contemporary life. It may be almost fifty years since Emily, Vince, and Marsha spent the season in East Hampton, but they wouldn't be out of place on the set of Girls or in the pages of a novel like Sheila Heti's How Should a Person Be?"--

Book excerpt: The bestseller that challenges conventional thinking about morality, politics, and religion in a way that speaks to conservatives and liberals alike—a “landmark contribution to humanity’s understanding of itself” (The New York Times Book Review). Drawing on his twenty-five years of groundbreaking research on moral psychology, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt shows how moral judgments arise not from reason but from gut feelings. He shows why liberals, conservatives, and libertarians have such different intuitions about right and wrong, and he shows why each side is actually right about many of its central concerns. In this subtle yet accessible book, Haidt gives you the key to understanding the miracle of human cooperation, as well as the curse of our eternal divisions and conflicts. If you’re ready to trade in anger for understanding, read The Righteous Mind.

Book Analytical Mechanics A Comprehensive Treatise On The Dynamics Of Constrained Systems Reprint Edition

Download or read book Analytical Mechanics A Comprehensive Treatise On The Dynamics Of Constrained Systems Reprint Edition written by John G Papastavridis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 1417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art, treatise on the energetic mechanics of Lagrange and Hamilton, that is, classical analytical dynamics, and its principal applications to constrained systems (contact, rolling, and servoconstraints). It is a book on advanced dynamics from a unified viewpoint, namely, the kinetic principle of virtual work, or principle of Lagrange. As such, it continues, renovates, and expands the grand tradition laid by such mechanics masters as Appell, Maggi, Whittaker, Heun, Hamel, Chetaev, Synge, Pars, Luré, Gantmacher, Neimark, and Fufaev. Many completely solved examples complement the theory, along with many problems (all of the latter with their answers and many of them with hints). Although written at an advanced level, the topics covered in this 1400-page volume (the most extensive ever written on analytical mechanics) are eminently readable and inclusive. It is of interest to engineers, physicists, and mathematicians; advanced undergraduate and graduate students and teachers; researchers and professionals; all will find this encyclopedic work an extraordinary asset; for classroom use or self-study. In this edition, corrections (of the original edition, 2002) have been incorporated.
