The roar of the guns aboard her sister ships and the roar of her own were deafening. Below decks the air was acrid with the fumes of burnt powder. Tanar of Pellucidar, chained below with other prisoners, heard these sounds and smelled the smoke. He heard the rattle of the anchor chain; he felt the straining of the mast to which his shackles were bent and the altered motion of the hull told him that the ship was under way. Presently the firing ceased and the regular rising and falling of the ship betokened that it was on its course. In the darkness of the hold Tanar could see nothing. Sometimes the prisoners spoke to one another, but their thoughts were not happy ones, and so, for the most part, they remained silent--waiting. For what?

Book excerpt: Tanar's narrative comprises the bulk of the novel. Innes had led an army to the relief of the member tribe of Thuria and the remnants of the Empire's former foes, the reptilian Mahars. Both had been attacked by a previously unknown people, the Korsars (corsairs), the scourge of the internal seas. These, it is eventually learned, are the descendants of outer world Moorish pirates who had penetrated Pellucidar centuries before through a natural polar opening connecting the outer and inner worlds. The empire's forces succeed in repulsing the Korsars, but the raiders retain as hostage Tanar, son of Innes' ally Ghak of Sari. They hope to trade him for the secret of the empire's superior weaponry. Leaving his forces to construct ships to counter the enemy fleet, Innes and his comrade Ja of Anoroc set out alone to rescue Tanar, guided by their own prisoner, the Korsar Fitt.On the enemy flagship Tanar is interrogated by the Cid, leader of the Korsars, and his ugly henchman Bohar the Bloody. The young warrior also encounters Stellara, supposedly the Cid's daughter, who attempts to intercede on behalf of Tanar and his fellow captives.

Book excerpt: Surrounding him upon the high poop of his ship was a company of beefy ruffians of similar mold, while far below, in the waist of the vessel, a throng of lesser cutthroats, the common sailors, escaped from the dangers and demands of an arduous campaign, relaxed according to their various whims.Stark brutes were most of these, naked but for shorts and the inevitable gaudy sashes and head cloths-an unlovely company, yet picturesque. At The Cid's side stood a younger man who well could boast as hideous a countenance as any sun ever shone upon, for across a face that might have taxed even a mother's love, ran a repulsive scar from above the left eye to below the right hand corner of the mouth, cleaving the nose with a deep, red gash. The left eye was lidless and gazed perpetually upward and outward, as a dead eye might, while the upper lip was permanently drawn upward at the right side in a sardonic sneer that exposed a single fang-like tooth. No, Bohar the Bloody was not beautiful.

Book excerpt: Traveling 500 miles through the Earth's crust in their "iron mole," David Innes and Professor Perry make the astonishing discovery that the earth' center is hollow and the site of an amazing interior world -- Pellucidar! It is at a Stone Age level of development, dominated by chilling reptilian monsters with a high degree of intelligence who communicate through extrasensory means. Evolution is proceeding along different lines in Pellucidar than it did on the Earth' surface, and humans are treated as inferior creatures. Danger and violence are the rule in this land of perpetual noon (the sun is always at the zenith), where time does not exist. In this second novel of the Pellucidar trilogy (the others are At the Earth's Core and Tanar of Pellucidar), David Innes returns to Pellucidar to seek his lost love, the beautiful Princess Dian, and to fulfill his vow to lead humanity out of the darkness of slavery and subordination. During an epic journey across the strange lands of Pellucidar, Innes has many heart-pounding encounters with strange peoples and savage beasts, often barely escaping with his life. This book is a prime example of why Burroughs' ritings have enjoyed enormous popularity for a century and are still favorites with young and old alike. Pellucidar is sure to appeal to any reader with a taste for gripping adventure in exotic locales.
