Book Tanagras

Download or read book Tanagras written by Violaine Jeammet and published by Musee Du Louvre. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named for the city in Greece where they were first discovered in the 1870s, Tanagra statuettes are an elegant example of ancient Greek terra-cotta sculpture from the fourth and third centuries BC. Mainly found in tombs in this city, the small statuettes take many forms, mainly girls but also young men, children, old women, and sometimes deities. In Athens, they were also used in sacred contexts and are believed to have had a religious significance. The "tanagrean" style spread all throughout the Mediterranean basin. Today, the Louvre houses one of the world's largest and most complete collections of Tanagra figurines. This stunning exhibition catalog is the most current publication in English devoted to the Tanagras. Showcasing the Louvre's prestigious collection of figurines, Tanagras includes new research carried out by the world's leading scholars of Hellenistic art and culture. The essays examine the meaning and purpose of the statuettes in Ancient Greece and the artistic and technical skill involved in the making of such handicraft. Tanagras presents a beautiful and informed look at one of the masterly achievements of classical Greek art.

Book Gender Identity and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture

Download or read book Gender Identity and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture written by Rosemary Barrow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and the Body in Greek and Roman Sculpture offers incisive analysis of selected works of ancient art through a critical use of cutting-edge theory from gender studies, body studies, art history and other related fields. The book raises important questions about ancient sculpture and the contrasting responses that the individual works can be shown to evoke. Rosemary Barrow gives close attention to both original context and modern experience, while directly addressing the question of continuity in gender and body issues from antiquity to the early modern period through a discussion of the sculpture of Bernini. Accessible and fully illustrated, her book features new translations of ancient sources and a glossary of Greek and Latin terms. It will be an invaluable resource and focus for debate for a wide range of readers interested in ancient art, gender and sexuality in antiquity, and art history and gender and body studies more broadly.

Book Hellenistic and Roman Terracottas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by G. Papantoniou, D. Michaelides and M. Dikomitou-Eliadou, Hellenistic and Roman Terracottas is a collection of 29 chapters with an introduction presenting diverse and innovative approaches (archaeological, stylistic, iconographic, functional, contextual, digital, and physicochemical) in the study of ancient terracottas across the Mediterranean and the Near East, from the Hellenistic period to Late Antiquity. The 34 authors advocate collectively the significance of a holistic approach to the study of coroplastic art, which considers terracottas not simply as works of art but, most importantly, as integral components of ancient material culture. The volume will prove to be an invaluable companion to all those interested in ancient terracottas and their associated iconography and technology, as well as in ancient artefacts and classical archaeology in general.

Book Hellenistic Pottery and Terracottas

Download or read book Hellenistic Pottery and Terracottas written by Homer A. Thompson and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles collected and reprinted here appeared originally in the pages of Hesperia. "Two Centuries of Hellenistic Pottery," by Homer A. Thompson, presented in 1934 some of the pottery found in the early excavations of the American School in the Athenian Agora. The series titled "Three Centuries of Hellenistic Terracottas," by Dorothy B. Thompson, includes ten articles that were published between 1952 and 1966. The working chronology that the authors established has made these studies basic references for investigations of Attic pottery and terracottas of the Hellenistic period, wherever found. In recognition of subsequent discoveries, the Thompsons' work has now been augmented by a preface with bibliography for each, prepared by Susan I. Rotroff, which comments particularly on the changes in chronology resulting from the continuing excavations in the Agora and elsewhere. In "Afterthoughts" Dorothy Thompson has made new observations concerning certain terracottas.

Book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J Paul Getty Museum

Download or read book Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J Paul Getty Museum written by Maria Lucia Ferruzza and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-01-25 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ancient world, terracotta sculpture was ubiquitous. Readily available and economical—unlike stone suitable for carving—clay allowed artisans to craft figures of remarkable variety and expressiveness. Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily attest to the prolific coroplastic workshops that supplied sacred and decorative images for sanctuaries, settlements, and cemeteries. Sixty terracottas are investigated here by noted scholar Maria Lucia Ferruzza, comprising a selection of significant types from the Getty’s larger collection—life-size sculptures, statuettes, heads and busts, altars, and decorative appliqués. In addition to the comprehensive catalogue entries, the publication includes a guide to the full collection of over one thousand other figurines and molds from the region by Getty curator of antiquities Claire L. Lyons. Reflecting the Getty's commitment to open content, Ancient Terracottas from South Italy and Sicily in the J. Paul Getty Museum is available online at www.getty.edu/publications/terracottas and may be downloaded for free.
