Download or read book Science Public Health and the State in Modern Asia written by Liping Bu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the encounter between western and Asian models of public health and medicine in a range of East and Southeast Asian countries over the course of the twentieth century until now. It discusses the transfer of scientific knowledge of medicine and public health approaches from Europe and the United States to several Asian countries — Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, Taiwan, and China — and local interactions with, and transformations of, these public health models and approaches from the nineteenth century to the 1950s. Taking a critical look at assumptions about the objectiveness of science, the book highlights the use of scientific knowledge for political control, cultural manipulation, social transformation and economic needs. It rigorously and systematically investigates the historical developments of public health concepts, policies, institutions, and how these practices changed from colonial, to post-colonial and into the present day.

Download or read book Is The People s Action Party Here To Stay Analysing The Resilience Of The One party Dominant State In Singapore written by Bilveer Singh and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the staying power of the People's Action Party, a political party that has governed Singapore since June 1959. A political titan with few chinks in its armour, the party has kept winning elections under three prime ministers and Singapore is about to witness a transition to the fourth prime minister. The party's seemingly unstoppable sterling performance makes the issue of the durability of the PAP highly critical. In light of the serious weakness of the Opposition and the strong performance legitimacy of the ruling party, it is worthwhile asking the question, can the PAP stumble and fall? Addressing this question is highly relevant given that similar political parties and structures have almost all collapsed elsewhere — the Barisan Nasional as the latest casualty with its defeat in Malaysia's 2018 General Elections. With an extensive coverage on domestic and international issues, up-to-date developments on the finalisation of the PAP's 4G leadership, the Workers' Party town council saga, and the efforts to form an opposition coalition led by Tan Cheng Bock are also analysed in this book.

Download or read book The History of Singapore written by Jean Abshire and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book overviews Singapore's fascinating history from the precolonial era to the present, examining this wealthy island nation from economic, political, cultural, and social perspectives. Singapore is a dominant player in the global economy, serving both as an essential business hub for international finance and home to some of the world's most important ports. It is also one of the world's smallest and most resource-poor countries. This book offers an engaging examination of Singapore using a theme of globalization to explain how the country's worldwide interactions across centuries have resulted in an ethnically diverse society and allowed it to ascend to a position of being an economic powerhouse. Every significant historic event and era—from its status as a meeting point for traders in the 600s to its colonization by the British in 1819, and from Japanese occupation during World War II to the 2002 arrest of a group of Islamic terrorists—is covered.
Download or read book Advancing Health Equity Through Surgery written by Soham Bandyopadhyay and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-communicable diseases are common causes of illness, disability, and death affecting a growing number of people worldwide. Many of these conditions tend to be more common, be diagnosed later, be treated slower, and result in worse outcomes for particular individuals: people belonging to ethnic minority groups, people residing in lower-income areas, and others whose life conditions place them at risk for poor health. Despite decades of efforts to reduce and eliminate health disparities, they have persisted and in some cases they are widening. Such disparities do not have a single cause. Some of the factors influencing health and contributing to health disparities include: social determinants of health such as poverty, lack of education, racism, discrimination, and stigma; environment and community conditions such as how a community looks (e.g., property neglect), what residents are exposed to (e.g., advertising, violence), and what resources are available there (e.g., transportation, grocery stores); behavioural factors such as diet, tobacco use, and engagement in physical activity; medical services such as the availability and quality of medical services. We have an obligation to examine the discrepancies in care, discover tangible steps to move toward health equity, and develop strategies, including the use of enhanced surgical education techniques and collaborative practice to deliver higher quality care to all patients.

Download or read book Rickshaw Coolie written by James Francis Warren and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1880 and 1930 colonial Singapore attracted tens of thousands of Chinese immigrant laborers, brought to serve its rapidly growing economy. This book chronicles the vast movement of coolies between China and the Nanyang, and their efforts to survive in colonial Singapore. Focusing in on one particular occupation, of rickshaw coolie, this study unveils the devastating poverty of the Chinese sojourner in the colonial city, the disjunctions between colonial order and the reality of life on the streets. Drawing on a broad range of sources, including Coroner's records overlooked for many years, and making use of the technique of collective biography, this book brings to life the texture of experience, the ironies and - often - the despair of the laborers of urban Singapore. In the years since its original publication in 1986, Rickshaw Coolie has become an inspiration to those seeking to come to grips with Singapore's past.
