Download or read book Walker Evans written by Robert Plunket and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American photographer Walker Evans (1903–1975) is best known for his portraits of Depression-era America, a number of which were included in Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941), his famous collaboration with writer James Agee. In 1942, at the behest of retired journalist Karl Bickel, Evans journeyed to Sarasota to take photographs for The Mangrove Coast, a book Bickel was writing about the long and colorful history of Florida's Gulf Coast. Featured in Walker Evans: Florida are the surprising images Evans took during that six-week stay in the area, which constitute a little-known chapter in Evans's distinguished career. Far from stereotypical postcard pictures of sandy beaches and palm trees, Evans captured a region of contradictions. Here in the nation's seaside vacationland, Evans focused his lens on decaying architecture, crowded street scenes, retirees, and numerous images of animals, railroad cars, and circus wagons from Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, whose winter home was Sarasota. Accompanying the fifty-two images in Walker Evans: Florida is novelist Robert Plunket's wry account of the human and geographic landscape of Florida.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1936 and 1941 Walker Evans and James Agee collaborated on one of the most provocative books in American literature, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men (1941). While at work on this book, the two also conceived another less well-known but equally important book project entitled Many Are Called. This three-year photographic study of subway passengers made with a hidden camera was first published in 1966, with an introduction written by Agee in 1940. Long out of print, Many Are Called is now being reissued with a new foreword and afterword and with exquisitely reproduced images from newly prepared digital scans. Many Are Called came to fruition at a slow pace. In 1938, Walker Evans began surreptitiously photographing people on the New York City subway. With his camera hidden in his coat—the lens peeking through a buttonhole—he captured the faces of riders hurtling through the dark tunnels, wrapped in their own private thoughts. By 1940-41, Evans had made over six hundred photographs and had begun to edit the series. The book remained unpublished until 1966 when The Museum of Modern Art mounted an exhibition of Evans’s subway portraits. This beautiful new edition—published in the centenary year of the NYC subway—is an essential book for all admirers of Evans’s unparalleled photographs, Agee’s elegant prose, and the great City of New York.

Book The Translator Without Talent

Download or read book The Translator Without Talent written by Ryan Holmberg and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though with only two dozen manga translations, 80 essays, 55 reviews, one exhibition pamphlet, and zero solo-authored books under his belt, Ryan Holmberg PhD is widely regarded as the biggest fish in the puddle-sized sea of alternative manga in the Anglosphere. Fresh off a major professional setback and a steamy summer of near-murderous romance, in the fall of 2017 Dr. Holmberg departed for a two-year stint as a Visiting Professor at the prestigious University of Tokyo, where he would commence to document his research finds, translation troubles, and escapades with aging manga artists in a series of detailed Instagram posts @mangaberg. Since returning to the United States in the fall of 2019, Dr. Holmberg has continued to undermine his academic career as a so-called comics scholar by investing way more than time and sharing way more about his personal life than he should on this Instagram account.Collecting 300 pages worth of Instagram posts of cutting-edge research, rarely-seen manga images, and behind-the-scenes looks at the nitty-gritty of manga research and translation - as well as a NEVER BEFORE PUBLISHED manifesto of Dr. Mangaberg's thoughts and theoretical musings about comics translation - THE TRANSLATOR WITHOUT TALENT is a tell-all slog through two-plus years of activity of your favorite nose-in-the-mud manga scholar. Hopping across the work of some of the best and weirdest alt-manga and gekiga artists in the world, this genre-defying volume is perfect for anyone who is obsessed with obscure, amazing, and all-too-frequently retrograde manga, but does not have the patience to scroll through an Instagram account for free. Comics studies has never seen anything like THE TRANSLATOR WITHOUT TALENT . . . and it may never again. Published by the comics and manga fanzine BUBBLES in its first foray away from the xerox machine.

Book Virtuous War

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Der Derian
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2009-01-28
  • ISBN : 1135980926
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Virtuous War written by James Der Derian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtuous War is the first book to map the emergence and judge the consequences of a new military-industrial-media-entertainment network. James Der Derian takes the reader from a family history of war and genocide to new virtual battlespaces in the Mojave Desert, Silicon Valley, Hollywood and American universities. He tracks the convergence of cyborg technologies, video games, media spectacles, war movies, and do-good ideologies that produced a chimera of high-tech, low-risk ‘virtuous wars’. In this newly updated edition, he reveals how a misguided faith in virtuous war to right the wrongs of the world instead paved the way for a flawed response to 9/11 and a disastrous war in Iraq. Blinded by virtue, emboldened by technological superiority, seized by a mimetic terror, the US blundered from one foreign fiasco to the next. Taking the long view as well as getting up close to the war machine, Virtuous War provides a compelling alternative to the partisan politics, instant analysis and technical fixes that currently bedevil US national security policy.

Book In Cold Blood

  • Pages : 417 pages

Download or read book In Cold Blood written by Truman Capote and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time From the Modern Library’s new set of beautifully repackaged hardcover classics by Truman Capote—also available are Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Other Voices, Other Rooms (in one volume), Portraits and Observations, and The Complete Stories Truman Capote’s masterpiece, In Cold Blood, created a sensation when it was first published, serially, in The New Yorker in 1965. The intensively researched, atmospheric narrative of the lives of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, and of the two men, Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith, who brutally killed them on the night of November 15, 1959, is the seminal work of the “new journalism.” Perry Smith is one of the great dark characters of American literature, full of contradictory emotions. “I thought he was a very nice gentleman,” he says of Herb Clutter. “Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.” Told in chapters that alternate between the Clutter household and the approach of Smith and Hickock in their black Chevrolet, then between the investigation of the case and the killers’ flight, Capote’s account is so detailed that the reader comes to feel almost like a participant in the events.
