Book excerpt: A mysterious pocket watch, six mage shifters, and one deceased lover... My name is Crimson Arashi and I'm your typical 22-year-old, finishing my Bachelors of Arts degree. Sadly, my father insists I become a doctor, having supported my attempt as an artist for far too long.In this world full of magic and shifters, it sucks that I am the only child to a powerful Warlock - my father - and a Kitsune shifter - my mother. I'd already disappointed them because I am a human child - neither shifter or mage. I'd be lucky to light a candle with the snap of my fingers. After one night of drinking, drowning my sorrows of being a disgrace to my family, I crash into a man on the run with six men in pursuit to catch this thief. None of them notice the pocket watch that escapes their grasp, lying on the cold, wet ground. I didn't think opening it would grant me all the power and strength of the previous owner. I also didn't think it would belong to Storm Yuna, the strongest female magician known in our world. Too bad she was murdered, and now, I'd inherited not only her powers but feelings too. Yeah...feelings. It will take all my strength to navigate the Storm of power and feelings swirling inside of me. I just hope I can survive the trials that await me.

Book Taming Lust

    Book Details:
  • Author : Doron S. Ben-Atar
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2014-02-14
  • ISBN : 0812245814
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Taming Lust written by Doron S. Ben-Atar and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1796, as revolutionary fervor waned and the Age of Reason took hold, an eighty-five-year-old Massachusetts doctor was convicted of bestiality and sentenced to hang. Three years later and seventy miles away, an eighty-three-year-old Connecticut farmer was convicted of the same crime and sentenced to the same punishment. Prior to these criminal trials, neither Massachusetts nor Connecticut had executed anyone for bestiality in over a century. Though there are no overt connections between the two episodes, the similarities of their particulars are strange and striking. Historians Doron S. Ben-Atar and Richard D. Brown delve into the specifics to determine what larger social, political, or religious forces could have compelled New England courts to condemn two octogenarians for sexual misbehavior typically associated with much younger men. The stories of John Farrell and Gideon Washburn are less about the two old men than New England officials who, riding the rough waves of modernity, returned to the severity of their ancestors. The political upheaval of the Revolution and the new republic created new kinds of cultural experience—both exciting and frightening—at a moment when New England farmers and village elites were contesting long-standing assumptions about divine creation and the social order. Ben-Atar and Brown offer a rare and vivid perspective on anxieties about sexual and social deviance in the early republic.

Book The Taming of the Demons

Download or read book The Taming of the Demons written by and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newly translated volume of the centuries-old spiritual epic of King Gesar. For centuries, the epic tale of Gesar of Ling has been told across Asia. This epic is a living oral tradition, performed widely by singers and bards and beloved especially in Tibet. Considered the longest single piece of literature in the world canon, the epic of Gesar chronicles the legend of King Gesar of Ling, a heroic figure known for his fearless leadership. The epic encompasses some 120 volumes and nearly 20 million words, and there are numerous versions across cultures. This book is the first English translation of the fourth volume of this sweeping literary work, with stories from after Gesar's coronation to the throne of Ling. This volume focuses on battles won and strategies applied, as the warrior-king Gesar fended off demons and liberated his foes. Though largely a violent account focused on his superhuman prowess in battle, this volume is rich with ethical proverbs that inform Tibetan culture to this day. A significant work of legend, the epic of Gesar is also a vital part of Tibetan Buddhism, as Gesar is said to have been chosen by celestial beings to restore order and destroy anti-Buddhist forces. The epic of Gesar is the cultural touchstone of Tibet, analogous to the Iliad or the Odyssey. While Book One covers Gesar's birth, youth, and rise to power, this volume recounts the martial victories and magical feats that made him a legendary figure to so many.
