Book The Taming of the Sioux Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Taming of the Sioux No historian of prominence should presume to ask the public to take his work as the last word on the subject which it treats. There is bound to be some one who will find inaccuracies and deficiencies, and the whole work may be condemned on account of them. There never was a history written that is absolutely correct, so I suppose mine must be a little off on a few trivial matters. A deep student of the ethnology, phonology, psychology and anthropology of the Sioux may (I say may advisedly) find these defects. To him I offer no apologies, he has enough ologies now, and I don't wish to burden him with more of them. History is essentially didactical, indeed it is, and we soon tire of its prosiness, its unpicturesque display of data and long-winded statistics. However, there are some individuals who are ultra-pedantic, and to whom nothing appeals but what is strictly utilitarian. To such persons I commend certain parts of this work, while to the others - the great majority - the balance of it may prove entertaining. The absence of humor I greatly deplore, for it just seems that I cannot think up anythin' funny. But the reader may find a great deal to laugh about after all, if he is inclined to be critical. The old timers, God bless 'em, always take an important part in an historical work. But they seldom agree with each other. There is a psychological reason for this, as there is for most anything we do not clearly understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Abe Miereau is the ultimate proof that one can rise above hardships and low beginnings. Blessed with an eidetic memory and superior artistic values, he yet has hazy learning capabilities. Plunged into early years of turmoil and despair, he confronts life by seeking relationships that mentor him along life¿s precarious path to normalcy. As he battles for the love of his life-long friend, Sarah, he comes to understand how delicate life is and how it can be made sturdy by opening his heart to the advice of iconic powers that influence his life. But there is still one burning secret that Sarah had to hide from Abe, knowing its revelation would destroy the love they had come to cherish. Abe is a complex and compelling hero who faces a series of life-shattering decisions from which he learns to expect the unexpected. A moving novel about Sioux Indian culture in a Whiteman¿s world, The Taming of A Sioux is the story of an innocent child caught between village lairs and lions, but who manages to triumph through extra sensory powers endowed by his great, great Grandfather, Crazy Horse, the Great Plains Warrior. But tragedy is ready to strike at times when Abe least expects it. He finds himself playing a central role in a life-long drama that threatens to destroy everything that he holds dear. The Taming of A Sioux sweeps from the confines of a small timber town in Michigan¿s Upper Peninsula (Nahma) to All American football glory at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), to record setting performance with the Green Bay Packers, to the social register of British Artistic Museums. Abe¿s intriguing story bumps and bruises its way through the pits of despair to the heights of success and ecstasy.

Book Which Chosen People Manifest Destiny Meets the Sioux

Download or read book Which Chosen People Manifest Destiny Meets the Sioux written by Robert Dodge and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The belief in American exceptionalism reached its apex during the 1800s and was expressed as a God-given passport called Manifest Destiny. Among its victims were Native Americans. The Sioux resisted, eventually in desperation resorting to Ghost Dancing and claiming that Indians, not the whites, were the chosen people. The military, political, and legal destruction of Indian culture provided precedent and justification for the empire building that accelerated soon after Sioux resistance was crushed. Frank Fiske was a young boy who observed this confrontation firsthand at the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, where Sitting Bull was held, then killed. Fiske recorded the story as he grew and also kept the glorious past of the Sioux alive with his spectacular photographs of the people and their traditions. The story of the Sioux is interwoven with the story of the early years in the life of the multi-talented Fiske, who attended school at Fort Yates with Indian children. He entertained soldiers, cowboys, and Indians by playing the violin, worked as a steamboat cabin boy and helped in the army post's photograph studio. Photography proved to be his specialty and when still in his teens, he opened his own commercial studio. His appreciation of Native American culture led him to photographing the Sioux. Fiske's photographs feature prominently in this book and his photographic techniques are explained. This thought-provoking book documents the dramatic atmosphere where the US Army, Mississippi steamboat captains, missionaries, hard-pressed settlers and a host of other characters converged with the American Indians, during the westward expansion - a critical time in US history when the character of the nation was still being forged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hot Thespian Action! Robin Whittaker argues that new plays can thrive in amateur theatres, which have freedoms unavailable to professional companies. He proves it with ten relevant, engaging playscripts originally produced by one of Canada's longest-running theatres, Edmonton's acclaimed Walterdale Theatre Associates. This collection challenges notions that amateur theatre is solely a phenomenon of the pre-professional past. Whittaker makes an important contribution to Canadian theatre studies with the first North American anthology in 80 years to collect plays first produced by a nonprofessionalized theatre company.

Book excerpt: This encyclopedia provides a broad, in-depth, and multidisciplinary look at the causes and effects of warfare between whites and Native Americans, encompassing nearly three centuries of history. The Battle of the Wabash: the U.S. Army's single worst defeat at the hands of Native American forces. The Battle of Wounded Knee: an unfortunate, unplanned event that resulted in the deaths of more than 150 Lakota Sioux men, women, and children. These and other engagements between white settlers and Native Americans were events of profound historical significance, resulting in social, political, and cultural changes for both ethnic populations, the lasting effects of which are clearly seen today. The Encyclopedia of North American Indian Wars, 1607–1890: A Political, Social, and Military History provides comprehensive coverage of almost 300 years of North American Indian Wars. Beginning with the first Indian-settler conflicts that arose in the early 1600s, this three-volume work covers all noteworthy battles between whites and Native Americans through the Battle of Wounded Knee in December 1890. The book provides detailed biographies of military, social, religious, and political leaders and covers the social and cultural aspects of the Indian wars. Also supplied are essays on every major tribe, as well as all significant battles, skirmishes, and treaties.
