The woman is as foolish as she is brave and has a wild heart that’s been a thorn in my side since she arrived on the island. She has me breaking all the rules I set for myself while demanding I break more. The easiest thing would be to distance myself, allow her fate to be out of my hands. Problem is, I still want her. Book excerpt: Enjoy book one in this thrilling captive romance trilogy by dark romance author Nicole Cypher... Caged. That’s the word that best describes my current predicament. Kidnapped and taken to a private island full of hungry, depraved men, it seems like my situation can’t get any worse, but, unfortunately, I’m not sure that’s true. The mystery of how I got here reeks of betrayal, and I don’t know how much more of it I can take. It’s starting to seem like lies and deceit are all that I know. The only crumb of comfort I have comes from one of the island residents, a man I’m told to call Mr. A. He isn’t quite like the rest, and he gives me hope I can’t help but cling to in a place like this. I hear the rumors, learn why he keeps me at the island manor instead of taking me for himself, and still, I try to put my trust in him like he asks. Because on an island of monsters, what choice do I have? I want to believe his intentions are pure … but will he turn out to be the biggest liar of them all? A note from Nicole: Caging Liberty is the first book in the 18+ steamy dark romance trilogy, Liberating Deceit, and follows the suspenseful relationship between Angel and Liberty. The whole series is loaded with twists and turns, so get ready for nothing to be as it seems! Book Taming Passion for the Public Good

Download or read book Taming Passion for the Public Good written by Mark E. Kann and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Kann's latest tour de force explores the ambivalence, during the founding of our nation, about whether political freedom should augur sexual freedom. Tracing the roots of patriarchal sexual repression back to revolutionary America, Kann asks highly contemporary questions about the boundaries between public and private life, suggesting, provocatively, that political and sexual freedom should go hand in hand. This is a must-read for those interested in the interwining of politics, public life, and sexuality.”—Ben Agger, University of Texas at Arlington The American Revolution was fought in the name of liberty. In popular imagination, the Revolution stands for the triumph of populism and the death of patriarchal elites. But this is not the case, argues Mark E. Kann. Rather, in the aftermath of the Revolution, America developed a society and system of laws that kept patriarchal authority alive and well—especially when it came to the sex lives of citizens. In Taming Passion for the Public Good, Kann contends that that despite the rhetoric of classical liberalism, the founding generation did not trust ordinary citizens with extensive liberty. Through the policing of sex, elites sought to maintain control of individuals' private lives, ensuring that citizens would be productive, moral, and orderly in the new nation. New American elites applauded traditional marriages in which men were the public face of the family and women managed the home. They frowned on interracial and interclass sexual unions. They saw masturbation as evidence of a lack of self-control over one’s passions, and they considered prostitution the result of aggressive female sexuality. Both were punishable offenses. By seeking to police sex, elites were able to keep alive what Kann calls a “resilient patriarchy.” Under the guise of paternalism, they were able simultaneously to retain social control while espousing liberal principles, with the goal of ultimately molding the country into the new American ideal: a moral and orderly citizenry that voluntarily did what was best for the public good.

Book Civil Liberties National Security and Prospects for Consensus

Download or read book Civil Liberties National Security and Prospects for Consensus written by Esther D. Reed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of security has recently seen a surge of interest from political philosophers. After the atrocities of 11 September 2001 and 7 July 2005, many leading politicians justified encroachments on international legal standards and civil liberties in the name of security and with a view to protecting the rights of the people. Suggestions were made on both sides of the Atlantic to the effect that the extremism of terrorism required the security of the many to be weighed against the liberties of other citizens. In this collection of essays, Jeremy Waldron, Conor Gearty, Tariq Modood, David Novak, Abdelwahab El-Affendi and others debate how to move beyond the false dichotomy whereby fundamental human rights and international standards are conceived as something to be balanced against security. They also examine the claim that this aim might better be advanced by the inclusion in public debate of explicitly religious voices.

Book American Revolutions A Continental History 1750 1804

Download or read book American Revolutions A Continental History 1750 1804 written by Alan Taylor and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Excellent . . . deserves high praise. Mr. Taylor conveys this sprawling continental history with economy, clarity, and vividness.”—Brendan Simms, Wall Street Journal The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the nation its democratic framework. Alan Taylor, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history. The American Revolution builds like a ground fire overspreading Britain’s colonies, fueled by local conditions and resistant to control. Emerging from the continental rivalries of European empires and their native allies, the revolution pivoted on western expansion as well as seaboard resistance to British taxes. When war erupted, Patriot crowds harassed Loyalists and nonpartisans into compliance with their cause. The war exploded in set battles like Saratoga and Yorktown and spread through continuing frontier violence. The discord smoldering within the fragile new nation called forth a movement to concentrate power through a Federal Constitution. Assuming the mantle of “We the People,” the advocates of national power ratified the new frame of government. But it was Jefferson’s expansive “empire of liberty” that carried the revolution forward, propelling white settlement and slavery west, preparing the ground for a new conflagration.

Book The Quality of Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew H. Kramer
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 0199545731
  • Pages : 495 pages

Download or read book The Quality of Freedom written by Matthew H. Kramer and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least since the publication of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay "Two Concepts of Liberty" nearly half a century ago, political philosophers have argued vigorously over the relative merits of "positive" and "negative" accounts of freedom. Matthew Kramer writes squarely within the negative-liberty tradition, but he incorporates a number of ideas that are quite often associated with theories of positive liberty. Much of The Quality of Freedom is devoted to elaborating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of particular freedoms and unfreedoms; however, the book's cardinal objective is to establish the measurability of each person's overall freedom and of each society's aggregate freedom. On the one hand, Kramer contends that the existence of any particular instance of liberty or unfreedom is a matter of fact that can be confirmed or disconfirmed without any reliance on evaluative or normative considerations. On the other hand, he argues that the extent of each person's overall freedom or unfreedom cannot be ascertained entirely in the absence of evaluative assumptions. By combining those two positions and developing them in detail, Kramer pits himself against all positive accounts of liberty and most negative accounts. In the course of so doing, he aims to demonstrate the rigorous measurability of overall liberty--something that many writers on freedom have casually dismissed as impossible. Although Kramer concentrates principally on constructing a systematic analysis of sociopolitical freedom, he engages critically with the work of many of the leading contemporary writers on the topic.
