Book excerpt: Bull has a hard task ahead of him, winning over his woman and claiming her for himself after having to inform her she has to fake her death and run away with him. He knows how dedicated she is to her brother and his wife, their kids, and her students, but lives are on the line and he won’t take no for an answer. If he has to haul her away kicking and screaming, it’s something he’s more than willing to do. He refuses to lose her before he’s had her. Dottie loves her family, her job, and her independence. So when the man she’s been seeing for a few short weeks shows up and tells her if she doesn’t leave with him, her family may pay the consequences, she reluctantly agrees to leave her life behind and fake her own death. Her heart hurts with the thought that everyone left behind will grieve her unnecessarily, but it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission sometimes… and this happens to be one of those instances. Will these two survive the holiday season with the rest of the DreamCatcher MC brothers while hiding away so Pops can eliminate the threat to the club? Will everyone come out whole and happy? Can they come together and work through the travesty that’s forced them to destroy and then abandon everything they love? Or will this incident be what tears them all apart?

Book The Investment Zoo

Download or read book The Investment Zoo written by Stephen A. Jarislowsky and published by Transcontinental. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the greatest money managers Canada has ever known, The Investment Zoo is an incisive work in which history, culture, politics and finance are intermingled. Stephen A. Jarislowsky has had a single goal throughout his career: the defence of the shareholder. He has been outspoken in his criticism of breaches in ethics: overpaid bosses, directors who close their eyes to questionable practices, grossly over-compensated lawyers, and brokers who inflate their commissions by encouraging unnecessary trading. In The Investment Zoo, Stephen A. Jarislowsky reveals his approach to investment – the approach that has assured his extraordinary success in business – and discusses a host of subjects that touch him personally: his own path from childhood to adult life, his vision as an administrator, and his involvement in responsible philanthropy. At age 79, the incorruptible billionaire has lost none of the spirit that has so often aroused controversy. The Investment Zoo was published in Quebec to great acclaim. Since January 2005, it has sold over 15,000 copies, and has pushed the French edition of The Da Vinci Code out of the number one position on the bestseller list.

Just as quantum computers can regard sub-atomic particles as a wave and as particles, quantum learning can understand learners as simultaneously nondual (whole) and dual (part). The study includes a reconsideration of clarity in expression and thought

Book Culture and Ideology under the Seleukids

Download or read book Culture and Ideology under the Seleukids written by Eva Anagnostou-Laoutides and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume offers a timely (re-)appraisal of Seleukid cultural dynamics. While the engagement of Seleukid kings with local populations and the issue of “Hellenization” are still debated, a movement away from the Greco-centric approach to the study of the sources has gained pace. Increasingly textual sources are read alongside archaeological and numismatic evidence, and relevant near-eastern records are consulted. Our study of Seleukid kingship adheres to two game-changing principles: 1. We are not interested in judging the Seleukids as “strong” or “weak” whether in their interactions with other Hellenistic kingdoms or with the populations they ruled. 2. While appreciating the value of the social imaginaries approach (Stavrianopoulou, 2013), we argue that the use of ethnic identity in antiquity remains problematic. Through a pluralistic approach, in line with the complex cultural considerations that informed Seleukid royal agendas, we examine the concept of kingship and its gender aspects; tensions between centre and periphery; the level of “acculturation” intended and achieved under the Seleukids; the Seleukid-Ptolemaic interrelations. As rulers of a multi-cultural empire, the Seleukids were deeply aware of cultural politics.

Book Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds

Download or read book Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds written by Steven Wagschal and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minding Animals in the Old and New Worlds employs current research in cognitive science and the philosophy of animal cognition to explore how humans have understood non-human animals in the Iberian world, from the Middle Ages through the early modern period. Using texts from European and Indigenously-informed sources, Steven Wagschal argues that people tend to conceptualize the minds of animals in ways that reflect their own uses for the animal, the manner in which they interact with the animal, and the place in which the animal lives. Often this has little if anything to do with the actual cognitive abilities of the animal. However, occasionally early authors made surprisingly accurate assumptions about the thoughts and feelings of animals. Wagschal explores a number of ways in which culture and human cognition interact, including: the utility of anthropomorphism; the symbolic use of animals in medieval Christian texts; attempts at understanding the minds of animals in Spain’s early modern farming and hunting books; the effect of novelty on animal conceptualizations in "New World" histories, and how Cervantes navigated the forms of anthropomorphism that preceded him to create the first embodied animal minds in fiction.
