Book The Maze of Fantasy in Tamil Folktales

Download or read book The Maze of Fantasy in Tamil Folktales written by Gabriella Eichinger Ferro-Luzzi and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book pursues an ethnographic and a theoretical purpose. The ethnographic first part examines how Tamil folktales, mostly gathered and published by Tamil authors, reflect Tamil culture. However, since the narrators want to amuse their listeners and arouse their interest they tend to exaggerate or invert the normal situation. Therefore, their tales reflect more reliably Tamil values, beliefs and interest than social behaviour. The second theoretical part stresses the importance of the actually occuring motifs and casts doubt on typology. Rather than artificially distinguishing tale types, often thought to exist independent of the narrators, it points out a network of thematic connections among Tamil folktales.

To the best of my ability and in order to put forth an important ideology across, I have managed to analyze and interpret certain happenings with different interpretations and connotations. We know that several rivers and numerous waterfalls merge into the sea, but where are these diverse set of characters and small stories travelling towards? Will they all meet at the point of destruction or creation? Nowadays, with almost everything coming under the radar, what if there is a significant something which has still managed to escaped this, trying to take over creation? It is the destructive poison Halahal, which is extremely powerful, and even the Devas and Demons hide themselves in fear! What if this poison is about to devastate the earth? This full-fledged war is between the forces of the endless energy on one side and an army of absolute supremacy on the other – and the self-centered citizens of the world helplessly watch whatever is happening. Who will win this war? Everyone needs a saviour now just like Neelkant, who will come to protect the people? This is what Aalakaalan is about

Book Hundred Tamil Folk and Tribal Tales

Download or read book Hundred Tamil Folk and Tribal Tales written by Sujātā Vijayarākavan̲ and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hundred Tamil Folk and Tribal Tales we have a rich variety of tale-types of a major South Indian oral tradition. Sujatha Vijayaraghavan s lucid English translation here beacons a serious engagement in Indic studies. It locates this body of work at the interface between folklore, anthropology, sociology and public culture of a by-gone era. This handy collection provides an easy access to the cultural registers and linguistic mores of a tribal/folk population at a crucial juncture of colonial modernity. Furthermore, she translates not merely the tales as she finds them in the Tamil original (naatupura kathai kalanjiyam), but distinguishes and recognises the tribal tale, otherwise unnoticed in a proverbial ocean of Indian folklore. As a vibrant vein of wit and wisdom in Dravidian lives and traditions, the tribal-tale receives the first-ever straight look in these pages.

Book Bedtime Stories for Grown ups

Download or read book Bedtime Stories for Grown ups written by A. S. Mohanagiri and published by HONEYGOLD Publications. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raw! Romantic! Rough! – this is a collection of folktales from India. Sparrows and swallows, foxes and dogs, farmers and potters, kings and idiots populate these stories and tell you short and sharp stories of their lives. The pages of this book echo their sorrows, angers, gains and losses, and more importantly their laughters and love affairs. These stories showcase life in its naked form highlighting fanning and farting with equal frankness, and become the Bedtime Stories for Grown-ups. Presenting a collection of twenty-five short and very short stories, the book humorously answers some of the important questions like “What did the farmer’s wife do to make her husband active?” “Where did the he sparrow go all night, leaving the she sparrow and the chicks alone in the nest?” “Did the beggar get the chicken stew?” “Who did actually sleep with the potter?” “How did the man shut his loudmouth wife up?” “How did Half Nose become No Nose?” and many more intellectual musings concerning human survival. Written in a simple language, straightforward style, and matter-of-fact tone, these stories are expected to bring many a smile to your face, numerous sniggers, sometimes a couple of tears to your eyes (if you are a soft sort), but whatever they bring or not bring, it is certain that they will give you the pleasure of reading romantic stories at bedtime.

Book Tamil Folk Music as Dalit Liberation Theology

Download or read book Tamil Folk Music as Dalit Liberation Theology written by Zoe C. Sherinian and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoe C. Sherinian shows how Christian Dalits (once known as untouchables or outcastes) in southern India have employed music to protest social oppression and as a vehicle of liberation. Her focus is on the life and theology of a charismatic composer and leader, Reverend J. Theophilus Appavoo, who drew on Tamil folk music to create a distinctive form of indigenized Christian music. Appavoo composed songs and liturgy infused with messages linking Christian theology with critiques of social inequality. Sherinian traces the history of Christian music in India and introduces us to a community of Tamil Dalit Christian villagers, seminary students, activists, and theologians who have been inspired by Appavoo's music to work for social justice. Multimedia components available online include video and audio recordings of musical performances, religious services, and community rituals.
