Book Taming the Beast

Download or read book Taming the Beast written by Larry Light and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A compelling financial narrative on flexible strategies investors can use to protect their assets Which is the best strategy for protecting your investments? Value investing? Indexing? Hedging? Growth investing? Asset allocation? It all depends upon the market because, although Wall Street has tried time and time again to devise a single system to tame the beast, the only thing that's constant about the market is that it's always changing and no one system will work perfectly to protect your assets each and every time. Taming the Beast: Wall Street's Imperfect Answers to Making Money presents the various strategies, and shows you how the best strategy is to be both flexible and nimble. Details the origins and evolutions of Wall Street's most popular trading strategies Describes who originated the strategy, and those who contributed to it Analyzes each strategy's strengths and weaknesses As Benjamin Graham noted in the 1930s, investors would be well advised to avoid getting mired in one set of beliefs. Times change, and so do markets. The key is to be flexible. Taming the Beast shows you how.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement has been increasingly under fire in the media for what we believe is unnecessary police violence. But few have suggestions as to what we can do about it. There is a noticeable gap between the way officers are trained and how the brain processes information in the stressful and risky situations which police work. Training arguably no longer prepares our officers for how to effectively deal with these situations. But with advancements in neuroscience, we could finally have the answer. We can guide modern training for better decision-making and performance under life-threatening stress and pressure – for the good of police officers and the public. Taming the Serpent brings the research about neuroscience and law enforcement together, showing how we can revolutionise modern law enforcement.

Book Taming Giant Projects

Download or read book Taming Giant Projects written by Oskar Grün and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giant projects often end in giant failures. From the ancient tower of Babel to the recent Transrapid Train, giant projects stumble from crisis to crisis. Based on an analysis of the technical, time, and financial goals from case studies (Olympic Games, university hospitals, and a huge wind energy converter), four success factors in managing giant projects are identified: Formulation and change of goals, basic configuration, socio-political environment, and management structure and capacity. The book focuses on the crucial role of the project owner and the relations among the four success factors. It offers recommendations and guidance on successfully completing giant projects to owners, project managers and contractors.

Book Taming the Unknown

  • Author : Victor J. Katz

Download or read book Taming the Unknown written by Victor J. Katz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is algebra? For some, it is an abstract language of x's and y’s. For mathematics majors and professional mathematicians, it is a world of axiomatically defined constructs like groups, rings, and fields. Taming the Unknown considers how these two seemingly different types of algebra evolved and how they relate. Victor Katz and Karen Parshall explore the history of algebra, from its roots in the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, China, and India, through its development in the medieval Islamic world and medieval and early modern Europe, to its modern form in the early twentieth century. Defining algebra originally as a collection of techniques for determining unknowns, the authors trace the development of these techniques from geometric beginnings in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and classical Greece. They show how similar problems were tackled in Alexandrian Greece, in China, and in India, then look at how medieval Islamic scholars shifted to an algorithmic stage, which was further developed by medieval and early modern European mathematicians. With the introduction of a flexible and operative symbolism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, algebra entered into a dynamic period characterized by the analytic geometry that could evaluate curves represented by equations in two variables, thereby solving problems in the physics of motion. This new symbolism freed mathematicians to study equations of degrees higher than two and three, ultimately leading to the present abstract era. Taming the Unknown follows algebra’s remarkable growth through different epochs around the globe.

Book Non Archimedean Tame Topology and Stably Dominated Types AM 192

Download or read book Non Archimedean Tame Topology and Stably Dominated Types AM 192 written by Ehud Hrushovski and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the field of real numbers, analytic geometry has long been in deep interaction with algebraic geometry, bringing the latter subject many of its topological insights. In recent decades, model theory has joined this work through the theory of o-minimality, providing finiteness and uniformity statements and new structural tools. For non-archimedean fields, such as the p-adics, the Berkovich analytification provides a connected topology with many thoroughgoing analogies to the real topology on the set of complex points, and it has become an important tool in algebraic dynamics and many other areas of geometry. This book lays down model-theoretic foundations for non-archimedean geometry. The methods combine o-minimality and stability theory. Definable types play a central role, serving first to define the notion of a point and then properties such as definable compactness. Beyond the foundations, the main theorem constructs a deformation retraction from the full non-archimedean space of an algebraic variety to a rational polytope. This generalizes previous results of V. Berkovich, who used resolution of singularities methods. No previous knowledge of non-archimedean geometry is assumed. Model-theoretic prerequisites are reviewed in the first sections.

Book Taming Ares War Interstate Law and Humanitarian Discourse in Classical Greece

Download or read book Taming Ares War Interstate Law and Humanitarian Discourse in Classical Greece written by Emiliano J. Buis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Taming Ares Emiliano J. Buis examines the sources of classical Greece to challenge both the state-centeredness of mainstream international legal history and the omnipresence of war and excessive violence in ancient times. Making ample use of epigraphic as well as literary, rhetorical, and historiographical sources, the book offers the first widespread account of the narrative foundations of the (il)legality of warfare in the classical Hellenic world. In a clear yet sophisticated manner, Buis convincingly proves that the traditionally neglected study of the performance of ancient Greek poleis can contribute to a better historical understanding of those principles of international law underlying the practices and applicable rules on the use of force and the conduct of hostilities.

Book Global Governance Futures

Download or read book Global Governance Futures written by Thomas G Weiss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Governance Futures addresses the crucial importance of thinking through the future of global governance arrangements. It considers the prospects for the governance of world order approaching the middle of the twenty-first century by exploring today’s most pressing and enduring health, social, ecological, economic, and political challenges. Each of the expert contributors considers the drivers of continuity and change within systems of governance and how actors, agents, mechanisms, and resources are and could be mobilized. The aim is not merely to understand state, intergovernmental, and non-state actors. It is also to draw attention to those underappreciated aspects of global governance that push understanding beyond strictures of traditional conceptualizations and offer better insights into the future of world order. The book’s three parts enable readers to appreciate better the sum of forces likely to shape world order in the near and not-so-near future: “Planetary” encompasses changes wrought by continuing human domination of the earth; war; current and future geopolitical, civilizational, and regional contestations; and life in and between urban and non-urban environments. “Divides” includes threats to human rights gains; the plight of migrants; those who have and those who do not; persistent racial, gender, religious, and sexualorientation-based discrimination; and those who govern and those who are governed. “Challenges” involves food and health insecurities; ongoing environmental degradation and species loss; the current and future politics of international assistance and data; and the wrong turns taken in the control of illicit drugs and crime. Designed to engage advanced undergraduate and graduate students in international relations, organization, law, and political economy as well as a general audience, this book invites readers to adopt both a backward- and forward-looking view of global governance. It will spark discussion and debate as to how dystopic futures might be avoided and change agents mobilized.
