Book excerpt: My Viking Brain is at it again! My emotions have gone 'Viking'. Mom says to stop playing my video game. Viking Warrior Brain says "attack". I get grounded. Oh well. At least I have my favorite cookie for a snack. Until my sister eats it. I scream at her. She screams at me. Mom screams at both of us. It is full Viking. We end up in tears. It feels awkward watching my mom cry, but I'm angry. Why do I get in trouble over and over again? I want to be good. But once I'm angry it's like my brain gets hijacked. Want to know a secret? It does. Something called the amygdala (I like to call it 'Viking Brain') wants to protect me so it takes over and makes it hard to control my emotions. It can cause a FIASCO. At night I think of everything that could go wrong. My best friend is hanging out with someone else. Does she still like me? Mom says she is supposed to be home by 8. It's 8:30. Did she get in an accident? I haven't seen my cat. Is my cat okay? Did he die? All these thoughts make me worry. My stomach and head hurt. My Viking brain is at it again. It is over protecting me. The amygdala warns me of danger that might not ever happen. Being a Viking isn't bad. In fact, it is amazing. I am compassionate, adventurous, passionate and extra creative. I think out of the box. "Tame the Viking Brain" is the first book in an eight-part series to help Viking kids, teens and adults learn how to deal with anxiety and strong emotions. Science has shown that we can rewire the brain to better handle emotions. Tame the Viking Brain is based on neuroscience, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness, and Positive Psychology. Become an expert on your own brain and learn tools to empower your Viking Brain. Because let's face it. Vikings are cool.

Book excerpt: Take Control of Your Life Chances are, you’ve already had run-ins with your Outer Child — the self-sabotaging, bungling, and impulsive part of your personality. This misguided, hidden nemesis blows your diet, overspends, and ruins your love life. Your Outer Child acts out and fulfills your legitimate childlike needs and wants in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in counterproductive ways: It goes for immediate gratification and the quick fix in spite of your best-laid plans. Now, in a revolutionary rethinking of the link between emotion and behavior, veteran psychotherapist Susan Anderson offers a three-step program to tame your Outer Child’s destructive behavior. This dynamic, transformational set of strategies — action steps that act like physical therapy for the brain — calms your Inner Child, strengthens your Adult Self, releases you from the self-blame and shame at the root of Outer Child issues, and paves new neural pathways that can lead to more productive behavior. The result is happiness, fulfillment, self-mastery, and self-love.

Book excerpt: One hundred years have passed since Robert Falcon Scott's beleagured expeditionary team arrived at the South Pole, only to find that they had been beaten by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. The most feted explorer of his generation, Amundsen counted the discovery of the Northwest Passage, in 1905, as well as the North Pole amongst his greatest achievements. In the golden age of polar exploration Amundsen, whose revolutionary approach to technology transcends polar and nautical significance, was a titan among men. However, until now, his story has rarely featured as more than a footnote to Scott's tragic failure. Reviled for defeating Scott but worshipped by his men, Amundsen was pursued by women and creditors throughout his life before disappearing on a rescue mission for the Italian Fascist who had set off in an airship to claim the North Pole for Mussolini. The Last Viking is the life of a visionary and a showman, who brought the era of Shackleton to an end, put the newly independent Norway on the map and was the twentieth century's brightest trailblazing explorer. Against the backdrop of the race to conquer the most inhospitable corners of the earth, The Last Viking stands alongside The Worst Journey in the World for its grim immediacy of heroism and hardship. Bestriding the generation defined by adventure and the unquenchable desire for discovery, it is the mesmerising story of courage, misery, friendship and the ultimate price paid for immortality.

Call on her academic training, of course, and form a plan.... WHAT ABOUT NIGHTMARES? Once called Hauk the Handsome, Hauk Thorsson is far from it these days, having lived in a filthy Saxon cage for over six months. However, Hauk has a plan to escape soon and join the approaching army of Sweyn Forkbeard…until that lackbrain woman arrives and causes nothing but trouble. BUT SOME DREAMS END HAPPILY EVER AFTER: All right, it depends on the definition of “ever after.” And mayhap it wasn’t the best idea for Hauk to kidnap Kirstin, but she’d said she needed time; so, he was just doing what she wanted, sort of.

Book excerpt: Laughing Shall I Die explores the Viking fascination with scenes of heroic death. The literature of the Vikings is dominated by famous last stands, famous last words, death songs, and defiant gestures, all presented with grim humor. Much of this mindset is markedly alien to modern sentiment, and academics have accordingly shunned it. And yet, it is this same worldview that has always powered the popular public image of the Vikings—with their berserkers, valkyries, and cults of Valhalla and Ragnarok—and has also been surprisingly corroborated by archaeological discoveries such as the Ridgeway massacre site in Dorset. Was it this mindset that powered the sudden eruption of the Vikings onto the European scene? Was it a belief in heroic death that made them so lastingly successful against so many bellicose opponents? Weighing the evidence of sagas and poems against the accounts of the Vikings’ victims, Tom Shippey considers these questions as he plumbs the complexities of Viking psychology. Along the way, he recounts many of the great bravura scenes of Old Norse literature, including the Fall of the House of the Skjoldungs, the clash between the two great longships Ironbeard and Long Serpent, and the death of Thormod the skald. One of the most exciting books on Vikings for a generation, Laughing Shall I Die presents Vikings for what they were: not peaceful explorers and traders, but warriors, marauders, and storytellers.
