Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans Talmud places eunuchs and androgynes at the center of rabbinic literature and asks what we can learn from them about Judaism and the project of transgender history. Rather than treating these figures as anomalies to be justified or explained away, Max K. Strassfeld argues that they profoundly shaped ideas about law, as the rabbis constructed intricate taxonomies of gender across dozens of texts to understand an array of cultural tensions. Showing how rabbis employed eunuchs and androgynes to define proper forms of masculinity, Strassfeld emphasizes the unique potential of these figures to not only establish the boundary of law but exceed and transform it. Trans Talmud challenges how we understand gender in Judaism and demonstrates that acknowledging nonbinary gender prompts a reassessment of Jewish literature and law.

Book Jewish Literature And Other Essays

Download or read book Jewish Literature And Other Essays written by Gustav Karpeles and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-09 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jewish Literature And Other Essays This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Rabbinic Wisdom Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rabbinic Wisdom Classic Reprint written by Jennie Reizenstein and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rabbinic Wisdom This book contains sayings and stories culled from the wide range of Rabbinical literature. It is one of the few attempts thus far made to put Talmudic material to pedagogic and inspirational uses. The teacher in the religious school might with profit ask his pupils to read one of these selections in order to furnish concrete, though often unfamiliar, illustration for the lesson to be taught. Nor can it be denied that, apart from pedagogic utility, this publication will serve as a religio-ethical reader. Miss Reizenstein does not claim to have translated the material she presents from the original sources, but desires herewith to express her indebtedness to the men whose translations of the Rabbinical literature into modern languages she has used. Bringing to her task exceptional skill and excellent judgment, coupled with valuable experience as a teacher in both public and religious schools, Miss Reizenstein has produced a book which will receive, I feel certain, a hearty welcome at the hands, not only of teachers and pupils, but also of a wider circle of Jewish readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School System of the Talmud: With a Sketch of the Talmudical Treatise Baba Kama HE first edition of the 'school System of the Talmud' was published in 1882, and was very favourably received by the general public, and also by the press, as may be seen by the opinions quoted at the end of the volume. That edition, however, being now entirely ex hansted, I have been asked by many interested in the education of the young to prepare a second. This task I have willingly undertaken, and have thoroughly revised the work and added some new matter and an introduction. I take the opportunity of expressing my best thanks to Mr. A. Feldman, b.a., and to my son, Mr. F. S. Spiers, b.sc., for having kindly assisted me in revising and correcting the proof sheets. Book The Pentateuch According to the Talmud

Download or read book The Pentateuch According to the Talmud written by Paul Isaac Hershon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pentateuch According to the Talmud: Genesis; With a Talmudical Commentary Tm: question, What is the Talmud? Has, of late years, been brought prominently before the public, both in England and on the Continent; and it is no exaggeration to say, that at no other time have so many attempts been made to open up its arcane. To the world at large, and to bring them within the cognisance of everybody, at all able and willing to form a judgment upon the merits of this huge depository of Jewish tradition. Stimulated by the avidity with which their readers have devoured everything which professed to throw light upon this subject, periodicals of a high literary standard have devoted their pages to it in order to supply what seemed a great desideratum. The problem, however, is still unsolved, and the question, What is the Talmud? Remains precisely where it was before the late Emanuel Deutsch started it in the Quarterly Review.
