Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These stories have been part of India's oral and scholarly traditions for at least two thousand years, perhaps longer. Collectively, these stories have been known as the "Panchatantra," the Five Books. Although they originated in India, they have been told and retold all over the world in various versions and have influenced many literary genres, particularly those containing animal characters and 'nesting stories' i.e. one story in another story in another story. These stories have influenced Arabic and European story-telling since the middle ages and are clear precursors of Aesop's Fables and Arabian Nights. The version presented here, Tall Tales of Old India, like the original "Panchatantra," is comprised of eighty-five nesting stories placed within five frame stories, a collection of ancient folk wisdom, a guide on how to live a wise and good life. The over-arching frame story tells of a wise tutor telling these teaching tales to three wayward Princes in the hope of making them aware of the stark reality of life around them within which they will have to live and govern with discernment, judgment, and recognition of both the importance of friends and the duplicity of enemies. Many translations of the original Sanskrit are available in English and some selected stories have been published for young children. However, the entire collection has never before been adapted for casual readers, whether teenagers or adults, or parents selectively reading and talking with their young children. No attempt has been made to sugar coat the grit of the stories or make them politically correct. And yet they offer valuable gems of wisdom in the multicultural global world of today.

Thing is¡ he has no idea they even exist. Vishnu Sharma, would-be boy hero, is too busy playing in online tournaments to care about fighting storybook wars. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series TALL TALES OF OLD INDIA is a modern English retelling of The Panchatantra (literally five books), a collection of millennia old Indian morality tales. Eighty five stories depict animals and humans struggling with thorny issues of friendship, collaboration, conflict and ambition. Relentless in their unwillingness to whitewash or romanticize adult life, they describe the ignoble as well as the noble, cruelty and deceit as well as honor, foolishness as much as cunning, deception as rampant as honesty. Lion, Bull and Two Jackals, the first collection of thirty three stories deals with friendship. It shows how the close friendship between the Lion and the Bull was formed, grew and eventually was destroyed by a mean and conniving Jackal. It highlights how friendship, indeed all relationships, needs tending. Cultivating friendship, like cultivating a flower, needs careful fertilizing, feeding and pruning. But the lessons go beyond how to treasure and keep enduring friendships. They include how to treat others with respect, honesty and loyalty but be on guard when others are trying to do you harm.

Five and a half feet might seem pretty tall for a twelve-year-old, but it’s not when your parents are giants. Lena has kept the fact that she’s a tiny giant secret, using magic to grow when out in the giant village. But hiding who she is has always felt wrong, even though she knows the other giants might not accept her. Fortunately, Lena has friends down in the Cursed City who understand that looking different doesn’t make her less of a giant. Someone who knows not to judge by appearances is Jin, a young genie currently serving one thousand and thirty-eight years of genie training that requires him to fulfill the wish of whoever holds his magical ring. In Jin’s case, it’s the power-hungry Golden King. At least the king only has two wishes left, one of which is for Jin to go to the Cursed City and capture its protector, the Last Knight—one of Lena’s closest friends. What Lena and Jin don’t know is how close the Golden King’s plans are to coming together, between his dark magic and his horrible Faceless knights. If Jin does find the Last Knight and bring him to the Golden King, why, that could doom the entire fairy-tale world. …This sounds like it’ll end badly, doesn’t it?

The crucial lesson to be learned is never trust an enemy.

Book excerpt: The perfect addition to every family’s home library and just right for sharing aloud, American Tall Tales introduces readers to America’s first folk heroes in nine wildly exaggerated and downright funny stories. Here are Paul Bunyan, that king-sized lumberjack who could fell “ten white pines with a single swing”; John Henry, with his mighty hammer; Mose, old New York’s biggest, bravest fireman; Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind, who could “outgrin, outsnort, outrun, outlift, outsneeze, outsleep, outlie any varmint”; and other uniquely American characters, together in one superb collection. In the tradition of the original nineteenth-century storytellers, Mary Pope Osborne compiles, edits, and adds her own two cents’ worth—and also supplies fascinating historical headnotes. Michael McCurdy’s robust colored wood engravings recall an earlier time, perfectly capturing all the vitality of the men and women who carved a new country out of the North American wilderness.

Relentless in their unwillingness to whitewash or romanticize adult life, they describe the ignoble as well as the noble, cruelty and deceit as well as honor, foolishness as much as cunning, deception as rampant as honesty. Four Fortune Hunters the fifth and final set of twelve stories in the Panchatantra, is about misguided perceptions, drawing the wrong conclusions and coming to hasty and devastating judgment as a result of misreading another creature's situation. It is also about abject poverty, the bane of existence, and its consequences: the very worth of virtue, bravery, even learning, dims with poverty and people go to great lengths to escape it. But good or evil comes to good or bad people as Fate wills it and extravagant hope is an indulgence. The book celebrates the crucial role of common sense triumphing over pretentious learning, personal vanity and preposterous ambition. The greatest curse is that most dangerous ambition - greed.

Monkey and Crocodile the fourth set of twelve stories, deals with how to protect and preserve any gains you have made in life, no matter in what sphere. Most of the loss-of-gain stories are told by the Monkey who fooled the Crocodile into freeing him from sure death by telling a clever story. Many are about the use of deceit to improve one's position, or to protect oneself. And the losers are foolish enough to be tricked out of their gains by a sweet-talking adversary. They are gullible and deserve what they get. Deceit, when exposed, can lead to the deceiver's undoing. One should be humble before the noble, use intrigue when one cannot win advantage by strength, pay bribes when necessary, pick a fight only with equals, and give good advice only to those best able to use it.
