Download or read book Talks to Students on the Art of Study Classic Reprint written by Frank Cramer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks to Students on the Art of Study The book is not intended to fill the place of a manual of logic or psychology or pedagogy. There is already a surfeit of such books. It is intended to furnish effective suggestion to the student who is passing through the critical period of his intellectual life, while the mental powers are plastic but on the point of setting. The writer believes that with helpful suggestion, youth can in a measure be its own instructor in the matter of the right training of its powers. The first essential to this end is that it shall see clearly what is wanted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Work and Play: Talks With Students Student life presents many phases. Its special characteristics are strongly marked. An outside observer, misled by that which is most obtrusive, thinks of its gayety and its pranks, the noise and excitement which attend its intercollegiate games, its festivities, and, perhaps, its mistakes. Those who are familiar with it, looking beneath its frolics and ebullitions, find a more serious side, rich with ambition and earnestness, but checkered with doubts and misgivings. Hopes and fears, triumphs and defeats, are closely mingled on every college campus. Some of you are already familiar with the scenes of student life; to others its experiences and its episodes will be comparatively new. Such students may have come here with mistaken conceptions. Book The Fundamental Principles of Learning and Study Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fundamental Principles of Learning and Study Classic Reprint written by A. S. Edwards and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles of Learning and Study The present volume is a rewriting of manuscript which the writer has used for some time as part of his lectures to students in educational psychology. The aim is especially to show how the results of general psychology and experimental psychology and of allied sciences can be put into use by the teacher and the student in the problems of learning and of study. In the chapters on Making the Appeal to the Student, and Attention and Sustained Effort, examples have been given from the writers own studies and observations for the purpose of illustrating psychological principles involved and to suggest to teachers ways that have proved successful in the actual everyday work of the teacher. The writer thinks that The Habit Theory has not received its due in educational practice and perhaps not in educational thought. It is a principle which runs through the whole work of education and the adoption of it as the fundamental working principle of the teacher's work should help to bring the definiteness that is needed. If habits, including habitudes, dispositions and attitudes, are not all the results that education can show, we can see what is left out after we do our duty to the first and fundamental things. The general scheme of the book can be indicated by the following statement of some of the main thoughts: 1) The nature of education and of the educational process from the point of view of permanent results in the individual. 2) The necessity for permanent results of some kind and the nature of these results. 3) The process of learning, of making acquisitions which can be made more or less permanent and suggestions for the right direction of this learning process. 4) A discussion of how to make the best progress in learning. 5) The getting of not only specific but general improvement. 6) The factors that make for permanent results. 7.) Modes of appeal for the purpose of arousing and directing the desired activities. 8) The development through lower to higher stages of attention, activity, and effort. 9) The development of the emotional and moral nature for permanent results in moral character. Book How to Study Effectively Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Study Effectively Classic Reprint written by Guy Montrose Whipple and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Study Effectively While it is true that much of what is presented in the school is calculated to appeal directly to the native interests of students, to elicit their curiosity, and to challenge their attention, it is equally true that most studying is real work, and that most boys and girls have to acquire the art of studying as they have to acquire many other habits and skills necessary to success in life. Moreover, conditions in many elementary schools are unfortunately such as to promote only the most superficial kind of studying, to put a premium upon the mere committing to memory of words, to permit fickle and ill-sustained attention and the avoidance of hard intellectual work. Students in both high school and college have been studying, it is true, for years, but too often they have not been studying efficiently, have not formed right habits of mental work, and indeed, do not even know how to go about the development of an adequate method or plan for such work. They are often unable to recognize as such the problems set before them, nor do they have clear ideas as to the methods by which problems should be solved. Neither do they know fully how to deal with those 'lessons' that must be 'learned' more or less verbatim. For by 'studying' I mean to include the 'getting of lessons, ' like learning a list of words in spelling, as well as studying in the sense of solving problems and making an investigatory examination and critical survey of a topic. Book The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Classic Reprint written by Francois Gouin and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages; and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered. The world has this year seen a magnificent celebration of the grand services to the cause of education rendered by Comenius. In spite of this we are still far from having definitely adopted in our school and college practice the now acknowledged principles perceived by Comenius - that education must be organic and not mechanical, that language teaching, modern and classic, should proceed by dealing with things and not with words and grammatical abstractions, and that before all else education should have direct bearing upon actual life. Book How to Talk About Books You Haven t Read

Download or read book How to Talk About Books You Haven t Read written by Pierre Bayard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightfully witty, provocative book, literature professor and psychoanalyst Pierre Bayard argues that not having read a book need not be an impediment to having an interesting conversation about it. (In fact, he says, in certain situations reading the book is the worst thing you could do.) Using examples from such writers as Graham Greene, Oscar Wilde, Montaigne, and Umberto Eco, he describes the varieties of "non-reading"-from books that you've never heard of to books that you've read and forgotten-and offers advice on how to turn a sticky social situation into an occasion for creative brilliance. Practical, funny, and thought-provoking, How to Talk About Books You Haven't Read-which became a favorite of readers everywhere in the hardcover edition-is in the end a love letter to books, offering a whole new perspective on how we read and absorb them.
