Book Talks to Farmers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Talks to Farmers Classic Reprint written by Rev. Charles H. Spurgeon and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks to Farmers "I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction." - Proverbs 24:30-32. No doubt Solomon was sometimes glad to lay aside the robes of state, escape from the forms of court, and go through the country unknown. On one occasion, when he was doing so, he looked over the broken wall of a little estate which belonged to a farmer of his country. This estate consisted of a piece of ploughed land and a vineyard. One glance showed him that it was owned by a sluggard, who neglected it, for the weeds had grown right plentifully and covered all the face of the ground. From this Solomon gathered instruction. Men generally learn wisdom if they have wisdom. The artist's eye sees the beauty of the landscape because he has beauty in his mind. "To him that hath shall be given," and he shall have abundance, for he shall reap a harvest even from the field that is covered with thorns and nettles. There is a great difference between one man and another in the use of the mind's eye. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Farmer and the New Day For many years I have been meditating upon the mat ters that have been written about in this book. I have lectured about them to students and talked about them to farmers and other folks. Long ago I planned to write them out in a book or series of books, but I have found it nearly impossible to write satisfactorily in the midst of administrative duties. Good thinking and good writing on themes such as these require from most of us, time, fresh energy, and sufficient relaxation of mind to enable one to chew the cuds of reflection. Ex ecutives find it difficult to secure these requisites. I am finishing these pages under the pressure of a demand to join at once colleagues overseas in educational work among our soldiers. All that I have attempted in this book, is to endeavor to state the larger problems which the farmer must face during reconstruction and to indicate the significance and character of the relations between him and the rest of society in this new era. There has been little at tempt to furnish solutions of specific problems; rather to indicate a few of the fundamental principles and methods by which agricultural improvement and an ad justment to world affairs can be made. This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks About the Weather in Its Relation to Plants and Animals: A Book of Observations for Farmers, Students, and Schools There lived at one time a man, who, being in want, and having long waited for Fortune, concluded that he would go in search of her. So he took what little money he had saved, shut up his house, and set out upon his travels in search Of Fortune. He journeyed on for many days, and made diligent inquiry of those he met as to where Fortune might be found. Some said she was in one place, and some were quite sure she was in another place. All were certain she did not dwell with them, and many said that perhaps she might be found a little farther on. Several even said that she had been with them but lately, and had just gone away to another place. After travelling many leagues, and spending all his money, he sadly returned to his own home, and there found Fortune seated on his doorstep, as if waiting his return. As he drew near, she rose quickly, and said, I have been waiting here for some time, in the hope that you would let me into your house. I have waited so long now, that I must go away to find Others more ready to welcome me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks of an American Farmer in England, Vol. 2: In the Years 1850-51 The kind and uncritical reception of my first volume, both at home and abroad, leaves no occasion for a formal introduction of my second. Sitting at the same broad old farm-house fireside, let me assume the same friendly companionable relation with my readers, improved by better acquaintance, and go on with my talk freely and unconstrainedly as before. To any stranger who may like to know what it is about, I will add, that the volume is almost entirely descriptive of rustic and rural matters, as they came in the way of a party of young Americans walking through some of the western and southern parts of England, with such observations upon them as a young democratic farmer would naturally make. I have added, in an Appendix, some information and advice to those wishing to make a pedestrian tour in Europe at small expense. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Lives for Old The first thing I did when I was fairly on my feet was to buy a farm. It was a matter of sentiment with me. All my family with the exception of my father had been farmers and even he, in his latter years, had talked wistfully of the independence of country life. His father had owned a fairly prosperous farm in New Hampshire and on his few acres had lived and died. He had raised there wheat for his flour, wool for his clothing, hides for his shoes, cream for his butter, and meat and vegetables for his table. He even made a fairly good imitation tea and coffee and sweetened the drink with maple sugar from his own trees. It always renunds me of a man who doesn't know whether to put his straw hat in storage or put another blanket on the bed-you know, undecided. The sun shines bright in the day-time, but the moon.shines with a glint of frost at night. In October, the year wants to have one more taste of Summer before plunging into the snowy moons. It's like a boy who wants to go in swimming, but doesn't want to walk, bare-footed, through.the frost on the bank of the stream. A beautiful month- a month with zip and zest and a touch of sad ness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Farmer, Vol. 8: March 25, 1826 Dear Sir - In answer to your circular, I would oh serve, that I should not have presumed to furnish matter for a volume of the Memoirs of the Board, had it not been asserted, that any facts, however simple, would be considered valuable. I have carefully watched the progress Of improve ment in agriculture, in order to derive benefit from any system of cultivation, new and useful, which might be proposed. Although many improvements in the business of husbandry have been suggested, which would no doubt be of advantage to the farm ing interest, were they reduced to practice, yeti shall speak of but one, which I consider the most prominent, and that deserving the greatest atten tion; and which, if generally introduced, would save to the farmers of this state, annually, many millions.
