Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Teaching Literature Few earnest teachers of literature have escaped those black moments when it seems perfectly evident that the one thing sure in connection with the whole business is that literature cannot be taught. If they are of sensitive conscience they are likely to have wondered at times whether it is honest to go on pretending to give instruction in a branch in which instruction is so obviously impossible. The more they consider, the more evident it is that if a pupil really learns anything in literature, - as distinguished from learning about literature, - he does it himself; and they cannot fail to see that as an art literature necessarily partakes of the nature of all art, the quality of being inexpressible and unexplainable in any language except its own. The root of whatever difficulty exists in fulfilling the requirements of modern courses of training which have to do with literature is just this fact. Book excerpt: How to Teach Literature: Introductory Course provides a detailed resource for homeschool or conventional teachers and administrators interested in an in-depth study of the subject. This fourth and final book in this series of teaching guides includes information not found in literature anthologies such as the following: suggestions for cultivating a love for literature, detailed analyses of each work, questions for review, test questions with suggested responses, essay topics, audio-visual aids, internet resource materials, classroom handouts, and recommended books that enhance teaching. The author emphasizes two basic reasons for teaching literature: It is instructional and delightful. This book provides a comprehensive methodology for teaching the subject that a teacher could apply to one year’s lesson plans without further investment in time. Other books in this series are entitled How to Teach World Literature, How to Teach American Literature, and How to Teach British Literature. www.teachclassiclit.com What do Truman Capote, O. Henry, and Homer have in common? They are all important writers happily included in Elizabeth Marlow’s How to Teach Literature: Introductory Course. Elizabeth lifts the reader to experience the beat in Poe’s writing, the stark descriptors in the work of Hemingway, the rhythm of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. She shows us that writing is not just a group of assembled words; it is a matrix of sound, color, meter, and imagery. For an English teacher, this is a helpful reminder and some fresh air. For a student, this is a gateway to the beauty and skill of great writing. To us all, this book is a way for the literature veteran to be challenged, and the newcomer to be lured into the wondrous world of literature. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. —John Baskam, middle school and high school English teacher at Covenant Christian Academy, Cumming, Georgia This is just the sort of guide I wish I’d had when I was homeschooling my children. Elizabeth Marlow addresses both the big picture, which is the main goal of fostering a lifelong love for classic literature in students, and everyday practical concerns. Parents and teachers will find her trustworthy in her mature spiritual grounding, her impeccable literary taste, and her wealth of experience gained from decades of teaching literature in a Christian school. The book is well organized and thorough, and her witty, down-to-earth writing style makes it a pleasure to read. —Marcelle Tuggle, veteran homeschool mom

Book English Literature Teaching in Schools

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature Teaching in Schools: Two Lectures With Examples If we were to inquire, in any hundred English schools taken at random, whether Literature formed a part of the regular school course, I think we should get positive, very positive, answers in the affirmative from at least ninety-nine. And yet I am prepared to maintain that at least ninety-eight of the ninety-nine answers would be wrong. There are hardly any schools in England, in which Literature, used as literature forms any part of the regular education. Works in many languages, by many famous writers - in Latin, in Greek, in French, in German, and frequently in English - are indeed employed in almost every school above the rank of an infant school. But employed how? As lay-figures for lessons in vocabulary, in construction, in philology, in antiquarianism, and all the rest of old Dryasdust's pet subjects; but as lessons in thought and imagination, in the art of expression, in the beauty and power of speech, never, or very nearly never. Book Teaching Classics in English Schools 1500 1840

Download or read book Teaching Classics in English Schools 1500 1840 written by Matthew Adams and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and engaging history of classical education in English schools, beginning in 1500 with massive educational developments in England as humanist studies reached this country from abroad; it ends with the headmastership of Thomas Arnold of Rugby School, who died in 1842, and whose influence on schools helped secure Latin and Greek as the staple of an English education. By examining the pedagogical origins of Latin and Greek in the school curriculum, the book provides historical perspective to the modern study of Classics, revealing how and why the school curriculum developed as it did. The book also shows how schools responded and adapted to societal needs, and charts social change through the prism of classical education in English schools over a period of 350 years. Teaching Classics in English Schools, 1500–1840 provides an overview and insight into the world of classical education from the Renaissance to the Victorians without becoming entrenched in the analytical in-depth interpretative questions which can often detract from a book’s readability. The survey of classical education within the pages of this book will prove useful for anyone wishing to place the teaching of Classics in its cultural and educational context. It includes previously unpublished material, and a new synthesis and analysis of the teaching of Classics in English schools. This will be the perfect reference book for those who teach classical subjects, in both schools and universities, and also for university students who are studying Classical Reception as part of their taught or research degree. It will also be of interest to many schools of older foundation mentioned in this book and to anyone with leanings towards the history of education or English social history.
