Book Talks About Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Talks About Animals Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks About Animals The prevailing color of the living lobster is dark greenish, here and there shading into a reddish yellow. The shell is changed to deep red by boiling. Strictly speaking, the trunk is composed of three parts, the head, thorax, and abdomen, but the head and thorax are commonly called the head, and the abdomen is Spoken of as the tail. Extending in front of the head is a sharp beak called the rostrum, and on either side of this is a compound eye raised upon an eye-stock. Beneath, and projecting forward, are two pairs of feelers, one pair long and slender, and the other shorter; but divided into two prongs. On either side of the mouth is a jaw which works sideways, while below are three pairs of organs called jaw feet, since while they have the appearance of feet their use is to aid in eating. Attached to the forward part of the thorax are the large claws, and behind these are four pairs of walking feet, having at the point of connection with the thorax the gills, forming feathery fringes of a light color. The abdomen is composed of six rings, and suspended from each of these are appendages called swimmerets. The end piece is the telson, and this, together with the last pair of swimmerets, which are much larger than the others, form what is termed the tail fin. The stomach, called the lady, and often falsely said to be poison, contains teeth, and is located in the head. The next time you have a chance to examine a lobster, please see if you can find his ears. He has a pair, but where are they? You might look, too, for his nostrils, for he has them also. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Jon Katz—“a Thoreau for modern times” (San Antonio Express-News)—offers us a deeper understanding of the inner lives of animals and teaches us how we can more effectively communicate with them, made real by his own remarkable experiences with a wide array of creatures great and small. In Talking to Animals, journalist Jon Katz—who left his Manhattan life behind two decades ago for life on a farm where he is surrounded by dogs, cats, sheep, horses, cows, goats, and chickens—marshals his experience to offer us a deeper insight into animals and the tools needed for effectively communicating with them. Devoting each chapter to a specific animal from his life, Katz tells funny and illuminating stories about his profound experiences with them, showing us how healthy engagement with animals falls into five key areas: Food, Movement, Visualization, Language, and Instincts. Along the way, we meet Simon the donkey who arrives at Katz’s farm near death and now serves as his Tai Chi partner. We meet Red the dog who started out antisocial and untrained and is now a therapy dog working with veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. And we meet Winston, the dignified and brave rooster who was injured defending his hens from a hawk and who has better interpersonal skills than most humans. Thoughtful and intelligent, lively and powerful, this book will completely change the way you think about and interact with animals. Katz’s “honest, straightforward, and sometimes searing prose will speak to those who love animals, and might well convert some who do not” (Booklist).

Book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Natural History of Animals Classic Reprint written by John Bigland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of Animals The study of Nature is the basis of Religion; and in the primitive ages of the world, previous to the epoch of revelation, mankind had no other guide to direct them to a knowledge of the existence and attributes of the Deity, than the contemplation of his works. These, indeed, exhibited such evident proofs of his power, his wisdom, and his goodness, as were sufficient to convince rational creatures, that a self-existent and infinite Being was the source and origin of all existence. This St. Paul so well understood, that he condemns the Gentiles, because, after having recognised the Supreme Being in the works of the creation, they neglected to worship him, and considers them as inexcus able; Because, says he, the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories About Animals The giraffe's only means of defence is in its legs, and it uses its heels for kicking to an extra ordinary extent, more so than any other animal, not excepting the horse. The prominence of the eyes enable it to see behind, when directing its heels against an enemy, while the blow it gives will crush in the skull of a man, or give him some broken ribs. If unmolested, it is one of the most innocent of animals. Though sometimes it meets its death from animals far below itself in size and strength, as the following account will show. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Animals It is probable that Dr. Arnold's disinclination for the study of animal life, and his painful feelings regarding it, had their origin In a peculiarity of his which made him such an excellent schoolmaster - the intense pleasure with which he contemplated moral'and intellectual advance, a pleasure which had for its shadow a feeling of intense disgust for incorrigibles. To a man with these feelings always highly-wrought, and even rather over-excited by the nature of his work, a man always anxious to make good Christians and cultivated gentlemen, the brute world must have seemed a very discouraging kind of material. The first lion was a perfect beast. The eyes of a child were as bright and wonderful four thousand years ago as are the eyes of a child now. It is not so with what man makes. What he does is never perfect. A plough, or a watch, or a shoe, is very different from what such things were two hundred years ago. As man becomes wiser, he is able to improve in his labour. Should think of these differences when sider the works of God. How lovely do thy works appear, Thou God of wisdom and of might And all that meets the eye and ear Imparts an ever new delight.
