Book excerpt: Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and for some younger adults with permanent disabilities and medical conditions. Prior to 1965, the year in which the Medicare program was established, about half of all seniors lacked health insurance. Today, virtually all people 65 and older have coverage under Medicare, and are eligible for this coverage without regard to their income or medical history. Medicare currently provides health insurance coverage for nearly 50 million Americans. Even with Medicare, people face many choices when they enroll in the program, and each year thereafter. "Talking About Medicare" is intended to provide answers to some basic questions related to Medicare coverage, as well as information to help make decisions on a range of topics related to enrollment, plan choices and prescription drug coverage. The Additional Resources section of this guide provides a state-by-state list of key agencies that can answer specific questions about Medicare, Medicaid, supplemental health insurance, the Medicare prescription drug benefit, and long-term care.

Book Ten Tough Conversations

Download or read book Ten Tough Conversations written by Tye J. Cressman, Esq. and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2014-02-13 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in America, over the phone and at the kitchen table, children and parents are discussing some of the most complex matters they will ever face. In most cases, neither the child nor the parent expected such talks to take place. Aging is inevitable, but most people are unprepared to discuss the practical effects of a parent's transition from full independence to semi-dependent living. This is a book that looks to guide a child towards successfully discussing a variety of subjects with a parent that are often inevitable, and always somewhat uncomfortable: (1) When is it time for a parent to stop driving? (2) How do Powers of Attorney work? (3) When is it time to bring caregivers into a parent's home? (4) Is it time to admit a parent to a nursing home? (5) How will parents pay for nursing home care? These conversations (and 5 more) are the types of conversations that most families will have, sooner or later. How a family handles these talks can determine the success of a parent's aging process. When properly handled, these conversations, and the attendant planning they encourage, can ensure family stability and successful aging. This book identifies context that can assist children in understanding a parent's thought-process during such conversations, and provides helpful starting points for conducting such discussions. Ultimately, the book seeks to promote the concepts of independence, dignity, and self-governance as pillars of central importance to the process of successful aging for parents. Also included is a recommended step-by-step approach for ensuring that a parent's aging process is simple, successful, and designed to ensure family stability throughout periods of potentially difficult transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A citizen's guide to America's most debated policy-in-waiting There are few issues as consequential in the lives of Americans as healthcare--and few issues more politically vexing. Every single American will interact with the healthcare system at some point in their lives, and most people will find that interaction less than satisfactory. And yet for every dollar spent in our economy, 18 cents go to healthcare. What are we paying for, exactly? Healthcare policy is notoriously complex, but what Americans want is simple: good healthcare that's easy to use and doesn't break the bank. Polls show that a majority of Americans want the government to provide universal health coverage to all Americans. What's less clear is how to get there. Medicare for All is the leading proposal to achieve universal health coverage in America. But what is it exactly? How would it work? More importantly, is it practical or practicable? This book goes beyond partisan talking points to offer a serious examination of how Medicare for All would transform the way we give, receive, and pay for healthcare in America.
