Dr. Scott, a noted expert on social issues and a sometime radio talk show host, provides a savvy overview of how and why today's talk shows and their hosts have become so controversial, compelling, and powerful (especially if they own part or all of their own show). Can We Talk? is a remarkably fair and balanced look at a profit-driven industry for which critics and supporters have become adversarial in arguing their competing claims, such as advocating free speech and free markets versus upholding social and community values. Anyone interested in talk shows and their impact on society, as well as social scientists, behavior therapists, and psychologists, will benefit from Dr. Scott's incisive comments as a social scientist, host, and panelist.

Book The Hidden History of Monopolies

Download or read book The Hidden History of Monopolies written by Thom Hartmann and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is the most important, dynamic book on the cancers of monopoly by giant corporations written in our generation.”—from the foreword by Ralph Nader American monopolies dominate, control, and consume most of the energy of our entire economic system; they function the same as cancer does in a body, and, like cancer, they weaken our systems while threatening to crash the entire body economic. American monopolies have also seized massive political power and use it to maintain their obscene profits and CEO salaries while crushing small competitors. But Thom Hartmann, America's #1 progressive radio host, shows we've broken the control of behemoths like these before, and we can do it again. Hartmann takes us from the birth of America as a revolt against monopoly (remember the Boston Tea Party?), to the largely successful efforts of both Presidents Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt and other like-minded leaders to restrain corporations' monopolistic urges, to the massive changes in the rules of business starting during the “Reagan Revolution” that have brought us to the cancer stage of capitalism. He shows the damage monopolies have done to so many industries: agriculture, healthcare, the media, and more. Individuals have taken a hit as well: the average American family pays a $5,000 a year “monopoly tax” in the form of higher prices for everything from pharmaceuticals to airfare to household goods and food. But Hartmann also describes commonsense, historically rooted measures we can take—such as revitalizing antitrust regulation, taxing great wealth, and getting money out of politics—to pry control of our country from the tentacles of the monopolists.

Download or read book The Radio Right written by Paul Matzko and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "By the early 1960s, and for the first time in history, most Americans across the nation could tune their radio to a station that aired conservative programming from dawn to dusk. People listened to these shows in remarkable numbers; for example, the broadcaster with the largest listening audience, Carl McIntire, had a weekly audience of twenty million, or one in nine American households. For sake of comparison, that is a higher percentage of the country than would listen to conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh forty years later. As this Radio Right phenomenon grew, President John F. Kennedy responded with the most successful government censorship campaign of the last half century. Taking the advice of union leader Walter Reuther, the Kennedy administration used the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Communications Commission to pressure stations into dropping conservative programs. This book reveals the growing power of the Radio Right through the eyes of its opponents using confidential reports, internal correspondence, and Oval Office tape recordings. With the help of other liberal organizations, including the Democratic National Committee and the National Council of Churches, the censorship campaign muted the Radio Right. But by the late 1970s, technological innovations and regulatory changes fueled a resurgence in conservative broadcasting. A new generation of conservative broadcasters, from Pat Robertson to Ronald Reagan, harnessed the power of conservative mass media and transformed the political landscape of America"--

Book Television Talk Shows

Download or read book Television Talk Shows written by Andrew Tolson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "talk show" has become a ubiquitous feature of American and European television. The various examples have been frequently discussed by academic commentators, as well as journalists in an attempt to place them in a cultural setting. Ultimately, the conclusion is reached by both academics and non-academics that talk shows matter because they are a focus for considerable public debate and are crucial to the landscape of popular television. All the variations of talk shows, from chat shows to celebrity interviews, have key elements in common: They all feature groups of guests, not individual interviewees, and they all involve audience participation. The studio audience is not only visible, but is given the opportunity to comment and intervene. Other books have applied academic analysis to the phenomenon of these shows, but this is the first to analyze the actual "talk" of the talk shows, and in that sense it is closer to discourse analysis than to other forms of analysis. This book provides a systematic empirical study of the broadcast talk in talk shows and maps out the range of formats that appear in the major American and British television shows. The contributors are members of an international network of researchers interested in the study of broadcast talk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A CHOICE Outstanding Academic Book Flip through the channels at any hour of the day or night, and a television talk show is almost certainly on. Whether it offers late-night entertainment with David Letterman, share-your-pain empathy with Oprah Winfrey, trash talk with Jerry Springer, or intellectual give-and-take with Bill Moyers, the talk show is one of television's most popular and enduring formats, with a history as old as the medium itself. Bernard Timberg here offers a comprehensive history of the first fifty years of television talk, replete with memorable moments from a wide range of classic talk shows, as well as many of today's most popular programs. Dividing the history into five eras, he shows how the evolution of the television talk show is connected to both broad patterns in American culture and the economic, regulatory, technological, and social history of the broadcasting industry. This book is for podcasters who can’t quite figure out what they’re doing wrong (and are ready to do things right). You’ll learn: - Why your “natural personality” may be repelling to people and how to make it attract listeners to your podcast like a magnet (See p198) - What to do when a company tries to “lowball” you on advertising fees (do nothing, except send them the email on p424) - It’s easy to screw up an interview. To be sure you don’t run into any problems, use my “guest contract” on p311. - A six-word “trick” (learned from a 20-year radio veteran) that will instantly make you a better host (it’s on p210) - 9 reasons to kill an interview before it happens – ignore these “red flags” and you’ll be sorry (p299) - What Victoria’s Secret models know about podcasting (even though you never hear them talk) – this lesson starts on p208! - Nervous on the mic? You have lots of company – 75% of podcasters to be exact. I give you a 5-step way to cure your “stage fright” on p229. - If you’re scared of getting bad reviews, don’t worry – I have three simple ways to handle critics on p236 (two of which can turn critics into fans) - Why copying top podcasters may be killing your podcast (I share the story on p116) and how to develop a podcasting style that works for you (and will attract more listeners) - My 3-step “episode teaser” formula – it’s boring, but it works (get it on p110) - Thinking of doing a “daily” podcast? You must read p103 before you start. - Want to impress a guest? See the chapter starting on p321 for my 3-step followup “ritual” that will make being on your podcast unforgettable (and encourage guests to promote your episodes) And that’s just the start … This book contains my complete system on how to attract listeners, deliver your message effectively, and build a big podcast. You can't build a big podcast on "hope." But you can build a big podcast. And if you’re ready to do just that, read this book.

Radio crackles with intensity.”—Joe Dziemianowicz, New York Daily News “The most lacerating portrait of a human meltdown this side of a Francis Bacon painting. . . . This revival, like the original production, allows its star to grab an audience by the lapels and shake it into submission.”—Ben Brantley, The New York Times Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio—his breakthrough 1987 Public Theater hit that was made into a film by Oliver Stone—has been revived in a “mesmerizing” (Newsday) production on Broadway, with Liev Schreiber playing the role of the late-night shock jock that Bogosian himself originated. The drama is set in the studio of Cleveland’s WTLK Radio over the course of Barry Champlain’s two-hour broadcast, being scrutinized that night by producers with an interest in taking the show national, and fueled as always by coffee, cocaine, and Jack Daniel’s. Barry’s jousts with his unseen callers—ranging from a white supremacist to a woman obsessed with her garbage disposal—are peppered with insights into his character from his ex-deejay pal and his sometime girlfriend/producer, and punctuated with a transformative visit from an embodied voice. Eric Bogosian is a writer and actor who over the last twenty years has authored five full-length plays and created six full-length solos for himself, including subUrbia; Sex, Drugs, Rock & Roll; Pounding Nails in the Floor with My Forehead;and Drinking in America. He is the recipient of three OBIE Awards and a Drama Desk Award, and has toured throughout the United States and Europe.
