Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Trail and Town IT must be admitted that the civilising processes of Rough and Ready were not marked by any of the ameliorating conditions of other improved camps. After the discovery of the famous 'eureka' lead, there was the usual influx of gamblers and saloon-keepers - but that was accepted as a matter Of course. But it was thought hard that, after a church was built, and a new school erected, it should suddenly be found necessary to have doors that locked, instead of standing shamelessly Open to the criticism and temptation of wayfarers, or that portable property could no longer be left out at night in the Old fond reliance on universal brotherhood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trail Tales IN his young manhood the writer of these sketches came up into this realm of widest vision, clearest skies, sweetest waters, and happiest people to engraft the green twig of his life upon the activities of the mountaineers of the thrilling West. At that time the vast plains and the bar ren valleys were silvered over with the ubiquitous sage through which crept lazily and aimlessly the many unharnessed arroyo making streams waiting only the appearance of their master, man. Under his seien tific, skilled, and economic guidance these wild waters, lassoed, tamed, and set to work, taking the place of clouds where there are none, were soon to cause the gray garden of nature to become goldened by the well-nigh illimitable acres of grain and other home-making products. Certainly, and say the most disappointing thing for Santa Fe, there was a no greater space than two or three years to fall between. Considered as regions, Florida versus New Mexico, the latter should be the older. In its settlement, that stretch lying between Santa Fe and San Francisco, and south to the Rio Grande and the now North Mexican line, was in a fairly populous and ourishing condition three centuries and more ago. I am especially indebted to Mr. Wallace, to Mr. Long, and to Mr. Burpee. To the first two, I have made grateful acknowledg ment yerbally; to make parts of Mr. Burpee's fine work available to the younger children has been a delight. Other debts for pictures, maps and material are acknowledged in the text and bibliography. The stories have been read and discussed in the Normal Practice grades; we hope that other boys and girls will like them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ox-Team Days on the Oregon Trail' is a book written by Ezra Meeker about his experience traveling the Oregon Trail by ox-drawn wagon as a young man, migrating from Iowa to the Pacific Coast. Later on in his life, Meeker became convinced that the Oregon Trail was being forgotten, and he determined to bring it publicity so it could be marked and monuments erected. In 1906–1908, while in his late 70s, he retraced his steps along the Oregon Trail by wagon, seeking to build monuments in communities along the way. His trek reached New York City, and in Washington, D.C., he met President Theodore Roosevelt. He traveled the Trail again several times in the final two decades of this life, including by oxcart in 1910–1912 and by airplane in 1924.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hidden Heroes of the Rockies One of these boys, Isaac K. Russell, after a series of adventures as an American volunteer in the Philippines, returned to enter the field of journalism. In this capacity he was working when Senator William A. Clark of Montana built his railroad connecting Salt Lake City with Los Angeles. On its completion the builder decided to dedicate his new road, by giving a free Pullman trip to all of the old pioneers who had helped to blaze the hard trail through sage and sand over which the rails had now been laid. At that time the question, what white man had first dared to take this desert trail, became a burning one. Mr. Russel], assigned the interesting work of writing up the excursion for the newspaper he represented, set out earnestly to gather from the best sources at hand this tale of the trail blazing through our Southwest. Hardly had his account come from the press before there appeared at his door an old mountaineer clad in buckskin, odorous of a thousand bonfires. This veteran of the Rockies came to make his protest; the story, be asserted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days Another vivid recollection of those boyhood days in Georgia was the return of my father from the army. The news Of Lee's surrender had reached us, and all of us watched for his coming. Though he was long delayed, when at last he did come rid ing home on a swallow-marked brown mule, he was a conquering hero to us children. We had never owned a horse, and he assured us that the animal was his own, and by turns set us on the tired mule's back. He explained to mother and us children how, though he was an infantryman, he came into possession of the animal. Now, however, with my mature years and knowledge of brands, I regret to state that the mule had not been condemned and was in the U. S. Brand. A story which Priest, The Rebel, once told me throws some light on the matter; he asserted that all good soldiers would steal. Can you take the city of St. Louis? Was asked of General Price. I don't know as I can take it, replied the general to his consulting supe riors, but if you will give me Louisiana troops, I '11 agree to steal it.
