Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Other Lands When you have been playing in the hot sun, nothing tastes quite so good as a. Drink of cold water. Ahmed and Hada live in a country far, far hotter than ours. Yet when they are thirsty they can have only a sip of luke-warm water from a goat-skin. To reach the 'near est well, they must travel miles and miles over the burning sands. This hot dry land where they live is called Arabia. The sea touches it for four thousand miles, but fresh water is very, very scarce. Arabia has almost no rivers except some which run underground. In some parts of Arabia rain seldom falls, and even the ocean breezes that blow across this big neck of land in western Asia are warm and dry. You wonder why anyone chooses to live in such a place, but about five million people do live there. Some of the people live in villages in houses of sun-dried brick, but many have no home but a tent. Ahmed and Hada live in a tent made of goat-skin. It is broad and low and has two rooms, one for Hada and her mother, and the other for Ahmed and his father. Sometimes Ahmed's beautiful horse, Selim, wanders into the tent too, and makes himself quite at home. Ahmed's father Hassan, owns many horses. They are smaller than our horses, but beautifully formed. They can travel a long time with out needing a drink. The Arabs are very fond of their horses and treat them like members of the family. Ahmed does not always ride on his horse. Sometimes he rides on a camel. Although Father Hassan has no house, he is a rich man. He owns many camels besides his horses and flocks of sheep and goats. He is a chief, too, which means that he rules over his tribe. But how can Father Hassan's animals get enough to eat in so dry and sandy a country? This is the reason. Arabia is not all desert. There are green spots here and there where the cattle can graze. When they have eaten the grass in these places, the family must move on. Book Nursery Tales from Many Lands Classic Reprint

Download or read book Nursery Tales from Many Lands Classic Reprint written by Eleanor Louise Skinner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Tales From Many Lands IN the far-off days when the story-teller watched his listeners in order to let their faces guide or quicken his inspiration he must have been in close sympathy with the eager children who stood near him. Some times he pleased their vivid imaginations with a cumulative tale in which the emphasis of rhythmic repetitions helped the story to unfold simply and directly and at the same time gave the delighted children a feeling of growing familiarity with each recurring cycle. Or perhaps he told a simple folk tale in which the actors - human beings or animals revealed in their experiences some hint of a universal truth. Sometimes a genuine fairy-tale with a well} developed plot was his theme, and by means of artistic imagery he flashed forth the lasting vision of an ideal. Through the ages the story-teller's tales have been bequeathed as a rich inheritance to the children of to-day. Book The Story of Eclipses Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Eclipses Classic Reprint written by George F. Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Eclipses Inasmuch as the Earth and the Moon are for our present purpose pratically solid bodies, each must cast a shadow into space as the result of being illuminated by the Sun, regarded as a source of light. What we shall eventually have to consider is: What results arise from the existence of these Shadows according to the Circum stances under which they are viewed P But before reach ing this point, some other preliminary considerations must be dealt with. The various bodies which together make up the solar system, that is to say, in particular, those bodies called the planets - some of them primary, others second ary (alias Satellites or Moons - are constantly in motion. Consequently, if we imagine a line to be drawn between any two at any given time, such a line will point in a different direction at another time, and so it may occasionally happen that three of these ever-moving bodies will come into one and the same straight line. Now the consequences of this state Of things were admir ably well pointed out nearly half a century ago by a popu lar writer, who in his day greatly aided the development of science amongst the masses. When one of the ex tremes of the series of three bodies which thus assume a common direction is the Sun, the intermediate body de prives the other extreme body, either wholly or partially. Book Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales Classic Reprint written by Grace James and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Green Willow and Other Japanese Fairy Tales" is a collection of 38 "tales and legends" from the Land of the Rising Sun, published in 1912. Grace James diligently gathered these beautiful stories from various sources, including the "Ko-ji-ki," which is the oldest Japanese chronicle of myths that has survived the test of time and human hands to this day. Warwick Goble, well-known illustrator of his time, enhances the appeal of the anthology by furnishing it with 16 artistic depictions of some of the characters in the stories. As he specialized in Asian themes, particularly Japanese and Indian ones, he is a fitting choice for the creation of this book. Children and young adults will find these stories a fine introduction to Japanese culture. Despite its translation into a Western language, various Eastern elements remain, such as the names of the characters and places, as well as the designations of certain figures. Also, certain Asian values, such as profound respect for elders and superiors, help youngsters understand why they are important and how they are supposed to be practiced. However, since the tales date back more than a hundred years ago, some customs featured may be deemed too conservative for modern readers. These old legends and tales effectively transports one to another era and place. As such, this anthology is a great tool for escaping into a fictional realm while, at the same time, learning or being reminded of timeless moral lessons that remain applicable today.
