Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Cymry: With Notes Illustrative and Explanatory It is with feelings of no little diffidence that the author has ventured upon the publication of the following pages; for he cannot but be sensible of his many and serious disqualifications for the task, of which the greatest is his very superficial knowledge of the language of the people, whose traditions he has undertaken to illustrate; and indeed he could not have dared to form such a plan upon a calm consideration of his own fitness for its execution. It may, therefore, be necessary to state, that no such design was ever entertained: the poems have been written from time to time, simply for the authors own amusement; and it was not until the accumulated foolscap, like the fearful creation of Frankenstein, seemed to call aloud for life, that the task of compiling notes, and preparing for the press, was undertaken. It is the tale of the son of a Welsh miner who immigrated to the United States when he was six years old and then became one of the greatest choral conductors of his time. The authors describe the musical talents Griffith passed on to his son and three daughters and also the three or four generations that followed. This inheritance of a Welsh talent of music, teaching, and stubbornness is the inspiration that led to this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welsh Food Stories explores more than two thousand years of history to discover the rich but forgotten heritage of Welsh foods – from oysters to cider, salted butter to salt-marsh lamb. Despite centuries of industry, ancient traditions have survived in pockets across the country among farmers, bakers, fisherfolk, brewers and growers who are taking Welsh food back to its roots, and trailblazing truly sustainable foods as they do so. In this important book, author Carwyn Graves travels Wales to uncover the country’s traditional foods and meet the people making them today. There are the owners of a local Carmarthenshire chip shop who never forget a customer, the couple behind Anglesey’s world-renowned salt company Halen Môn, and everyone else in between – all of them have unique and compelling stories to tell about how they contribute to the past, present and future of Welsh food. This is an evocative and insightful exploration of an often overlooked national cuisine, shining a spotlight on the importance – environmentally and socially – of keeping local food production alive.
