Book Tales of the Argonauts Serapis Classics

Download or read book Tales of the Argonauts Serapis Classics written by Bret Harte and published by Serapis Classics. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argonauts are the gold seekers of 1849 and the years immediately following. These adventurers came from all quarters of the globe and all ranks of society, and they had in common only the possession of the strength and determination necessary to reach the new Colchis. Here they lived, at first, wholly free from the conventional restraints imposed by an organized society, and each man showed himself for what he was. Many of these primitive social conditions still existed when Harte went to California in 1854, and they made a great impression on the observant boy. He did not use them in literature, however, until he was able to look back on them in the light of experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Argonauts, And, in a Hollow of the Hills: And Other Tales As so much of my writing has dealt with the Argonauts of '49, I propose, by way of introduction, to discourse brie y on an episode of American life as quaint and typical as that of the Greek adventurers whose name I have bor rowed. It is a crusade without a cross, an exodus with out a prophet. It is not a pretty story; I do not know that it is even instructive. It is of a life of which, per haps, the best that can be said is that it exists no longer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was nearly two o'clock in the morning. The lights were out in Robinson's Hall, where there had been dancing and revelry; and the moon, riding high, painted the black windows with silver. The cavalcade, that an hour ago had shocked the sedate pines with song and laughter, were all dispersed. One enamoured swain had ridden east, another west, another north, another south; and the object of their adoration, left within her bower at Chemisal Ridge, was calmly going to bed.I regret that I am not able to indicate the exact stage of that process. Two chairs were already filled with delicate inwrappings and white confusion; and the young lady herself, half-hidden in the silky threads of her yellow hair, had at one time borne a faint resemblance to a partly-husked ear of Indian corn. But she was now clothed in that one long, formless garment that makes all women equal; and the round shoulders and neat waist, that an hour ago had been so fatal to the peace of mind of Four Forks, had utterly disappeared. The face above it was very pretty: the foot below, albeit shapely, was not small. "The flowers, as a general thing, don't raise their heads MUCH to look after me," she had said with superb frankness to one of her lovers.

Goldseekers and voyagers they all had been, but it was to the men of the Great Year alone - the new-comers of 1849 - that the designation of Argonauts came to be dis tinctively applied.* It follows that in giving to this selection from Bret Harte's works the title which it bears - a title for which we are indebted to a precedent set by the best Of all authorities we are, in fact, using the leading term a little largely, a little beyond or aside from the rigour of its right Californian meaning. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Argonauts, and Eastern Sketches, Vol. 2 It had been raining in the valley of the Sacramento. The North Fork had overflowed its banks, and Rattlesnake Creek was impassable. The few boulders that had marked the summer ford at Simpson's Crossing were obliterated by a vast sheet of water stretching to the foothills. The up-stage was stopped at Granger's; the last mail had been abandoned in the tules, the rider swimming for his life. "An area," remarked the "Sierra Avalanche," with pensive local pride, "as large as the State of Massachusetts is now under water." Nor was the weather any better in the foothills. The mud lay deep on the mountain road; waggons that neither physical force nor moral objurgation could move from the evil ways into which they had fallen encumbered the track, and the way to Simpson's Bar was indicated by broken-down teams and hard swearing. And farther on, cut off and inaccessible, rained upon and bedraggled, smitten by high winds and threatened by high water, Simpson's Bar, on the eve of Christmas Day, 1862, clung like a swallow's nest to the rocky entablature and splintered capitals of Table Mountain, and shook in the blast.
