Collectively, these stories have been known as the "Panchatantra," the Five Books. Although they originated in India, they have been told and retold all over the world in various versions and have influenced many literary genres, particularly those containing animal characters and 'nesting stories' i.e. one story in another story in another story. These stories have influenced Arabic and European story-telling since the middle ages and are clear precursors of Aesop's Fables and Arabian Nights. The version presented here, Tall Tales of Old India, like the original "Panchatantra," is comprised of eighty-five nesting stories placed within five frame stories, a collection of ancient folk wisdom, a guide on how to live a wise and good life. The over-arching frame story tells of a wise tutor telling these teaching tales to three wayward Princes in the hope of making them aware of the stark reality of life around them within which they will have to live and govern with discernment, judgment, and recognition of both the importance of friends and the duplicity of enemies. Many translations of the original Sanskrit are available in English and some selected stories have been published for young children. However, the entire collection has never before been adapted for casual readers, whether teenagers or adults, or parents selectively reading and talking with their young children. No attempt has been made to sugar coat the grit of the stories or make them politically correct. And yet they offer valuable gems of wisdom in the multicultural global world of today.
