Looming in the immediate future is the conspiracy between the Evil Nur and Jenna’s injured sister Jade which will soon affect all of Kalandia as Jenna knew it. The future Queen Jenna learns from her father the story of her heritage: how her ancestors Skye and Kalinda created a Red Book Of Power to rid the Dimension of the Evil, but even The Reds were drawn to the powerful Evil. Skye and Kalinda decided they had to seal The Reds in two different locations, in the Chamber of Forgetfulness under the mountain, so they could never escape and wreak havoc on the inhabitants. When Jenna seeks the information about The Reds in order to locate the Evil Nur, her father warns her to be careful for what she seeks, for it may not be what she wants to find. What Jenna discovers through her Vision Sight leads the reader to The Casting, The Test of Steam, the rescue of her beloved Gavin, and a Wizards’ Duel. Life as Queen of Kalindia is nothing like Jenna ever imagined. Her ultimate mission is to return the White Book of Magic to her Queendom.

The world in which the tales are set is one which placed a premium upon slickness and guile as aids to success. . . . Merchants, aristocrats, Brahmins, thieves and courtesans mingle with vampires, demi-gods and the hierarchy of heaven in a series of lively or passionate adventures. The sources of the individual stories are clearly indicated; the whole treatment is scholarly without being arid."—The Times Literary Supplement "Fourteen tales from India, newly translated with a terse and vibrant effectiveness. Book A Tale Told by a Machine

Download or read book A Tale Told by a Machine written by Heather Duerre Humann and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent machines have long existed in science fiction, and they now appear in mainstream films such as Bladerunner, Ex Machina, I Am Mother and Her, as well as in a recent proliferation of literary texts narrated from the machine's perspective. These new portrayals of artificial intelligence inevitably foreground dilemmas related to identity and selfhood, concepts being reassessed in the 21st century. Taking a close look at novels like Ancillary Justice, Aurora, All Systems Red, The Actuality, The Unseen World and Klara and the Sun, this work investigates key questions that arise from the use of AI narrators. It describes how these narratives challenge humanist principles by suggesting that selfhood is an illusion, even as they make the case for extending these principles to machines by proposing that they are not so different from humans. The book examines what is at stake with nonhuman narration, the qualities of AI narratives, and what it might mean to relate to a narrator when the voice adopted is that of an AI.

Book The Tale of Hansuli Turn

Download or read book The Tale of Hansuli Turn written by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A terrifying sound disturbs the peace of Hansuli Turn, a forest village in Bengal, and the community splits as to its meaning. Does it herald the apocalyptic departure of the gods or is there a more rational explanation? The Kahars, inhabitants of Hansuli Turn, belong to an untouchable "criminal tribe" soon to be epically transformed by the effects of World War II and India's independence movement. Their headman, Bonwari, upholds the ethics of an older time, but his fragile philosophy proves no match for the overpowering machines of war. As Bonwari and the village elders come to believe the gods have abandoned them, younger villagers led by the rebel Karali look for other meanings and a different way of life. As the two factions fight, codes of authority, religion, sex, and society begin to break down, and amid deadly conflict and natural disaster, Karali seizes his chance to change his people's future. Sympathetic to the desires of both older and younger generations, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay depicts a difficult transition in which a marginal caste fragments and mutates under the pressure of local and global forces. The novel's handling of the language of this rural society sets it apart from other works of its time, while the village's struggles anticipate the dilemmas of rural development, ecological and economic exploitation, and dalit militancy that would occupy the center of India's post-Independence politics. Negotiating the colonial depredations of the 1939–45 war and the oppressions of an agrarian caste system, the Kahars both fear and desire the consequences of a revolutionized society and the loss of their culture within it. Lyrically rendered by one of India's great novelists, this story of one people's plight dramatizes the anxieties of a nation and the resistance of some to further marginalization.
