Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing body of literature about the missional church, but the word missional is often defined in competing ways with little attempt to ground it deeply in Scripture. Michael Goheen, a dynamic speaker and the coauthor of two popular texts on the biblical narrative, unpacks the missional identity of the church by tracing the role God's people are called to play in the biblical story. Goheen shows that the church's identity can be understood only when its role is articulated in the context of the whole biblical story--not just the New Testament, but the Old Testament as well. He also explores practical outworkings and implications, offering field-tested suggestions for contemporary churches.

Book A Tale of Two Nations

Download or read book A Tale of Two Nations written by Melina Druga and published by Sun Up Press. This book was released on with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on contemporaneous accounts of the First World War from Canada and the United States, freelance journalist Melina Druga offers readers an insightful exploration of early-20th-century attitudes toward the conflict, in A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WWI. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was two and a half years away from inheriting the Austro-Hungarian throne when he was assassinated in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. World War I began exactly one month later. That conflict would reshape Europe entirely, bring Canada into its own as an independent state, and stoke progressive activist fires in the United States. In hindsight, it’s easy to see how WWI radically changed the course of history. But how did people in Canada and the U.S. view the war at the time? What was worth reporting on, in the minds of news outlets and journalists, and which opinions dominated the broadsheets? Druga addresses these questions and more in this unique work of journalism history, which excavates opinions and coverage of the conflict to show how North American media framed the war as it was raging. This omnibus edition contains all five volumes of the A Tale of Two Nations series, with an expanded bibliography and a glossary of terms. Book 1: 1914 The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in 1914 Sarajevo plunged the globe into a massive war. The United States’ and Canada’s predominant viewpoints on the war served only to magnify pre-existing tensions between the nations. Book 2: 1915 The newly founded Canadian Expeditionary Force’s first sortie is the Second Battle of Ypres. Fifteen days after the chemical attack on Allied troops, the German Navy sank the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner, killing more than 1,100 passengers and crew. Book 3: 1916 The Battle of the Somme claimed more than 700,000 Allied casualties between July 1 and November 13, 1916. As war raged across Europe, the United States found itself preoccupied with homegrown violence. Book 4: 1917 The Canadian Expeditionary Force secures yet another hard-won victory, this time at Vimy Ridge. After years of speculation in the United States, President Woodrow Wilson finally declared war on Germany, plunging America into the international conflict. Book 5: 1918 By the time of the Allies’ armistice with Germany, Canada had been at war for more than four years, and the U.S. for nineteen months. No one could have predicted that a bigger, deadlier shadow was just over the horizon: the Spanish influenza pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mission is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate.' John Piper's contemporary classic draws on key biblical texts to demonstrate that worship is the ultimate goal of the church and that proper worship fuels missionary outreach. Piper offers a biblical defence of God's supremacy in all things, providing a sound theological foundation for missions. He examines whether Jesus is the only way to salvation and issues a passionate plea for God-centredness in the missionary enterprise, seeking to define the scope of the task and the means for reaching 'all nations'. Let the Nations Be Glad! is a trusted resource for missionaries, pastors, church leaders, youth workers, seminary students, and all who want to connect their labours to God's global purposes. This third edition has been revised and expanded throughout and includes new material on the 'prosperity gospel'.

Book One Gospel for All Nations

Download or read book One Gospel for All Nations written by Brad Vaughn and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible tells us what to believe––the gospel. Did you know it also shows how to contextualize the gospel? In One Gospel for All Nations, Jackson Wu does more than talk about principles. He gets practical. When the biblical writers explain the gospel, they consistently use a pattern that is both firm and flexible. Wu builds on this insight to demonstrate a model of contextualization that starts with interpretation and can be applied in any culture. In the process, he explains practically why we must not choose between the Bible and culture. Wu highlights various implications for both missionaries and theologians. Contextualization should be practical, not pragmatic; theological, not theoretical.

Book The Most Interesting Stories of all Nations American

Download or read book The Most Interesting Stories of all Nations American written by Various Authors and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact is, meanwhile, that, in the riddle story, the detective was an afterthought, or, more accurately, a deus ex machina to make the story go. The riddle had to be unriddled; and who could do it so naturally and readily as a detective? The detective, as Poe saw him, was a means to this end; and it was only afterwards that writers perceived his availability as a character. Lecoq accordingly becomes a figure in fiction, and Sherlock, while he was as yet a novelty, was nearly as attractive as the complications in which he involved himself. Riddle-story writers in general, however, encounter the obvious embarrassment that their detective is obliged to lavish so much attention on the professional services which the exigencies of the tale demand of him, that he has very little leisure to expound his own personal equation—the rather since the attitude of peering into a millstone is not, of itself, conducive to elucidations of oneself; the professional endowment obscures all the others. We ordinarily find, therefore, our author dismissing the individuality of his detective with a few strong black-chalk outlines, and devoting his main labor upon what he feels the reader will chiefly occupy his own ingenuity with,— namely, the elaboration of the riddle itself. Reader and writer sit down to a game, as it were, with the odds, of course, altogether on the latter's side,—apart from the fact that a writer sometimes permits himself a little cheating. It more often happens that the detective appears to be in the writer's pay, and aids the deception by leading the reader off on false scents. Be that as it may, the professional sleuth is in nine cases out of ten a dummy by malice prepense; and it might be plausibly argued that, in the interests of pure art, that is what he ought to be. But genius always finds a way that is better than the rules, and I think it will be found that the very best riddle stories contrive to drive character and riddle side by side, and to make each somehow enhance the effect of the other.—The intention of the above paragraph will be more precisely conveyed if I include under the name of detective not only the man from the central office, but also anybody whom the writer may, for ends of his own, consider better qualified for that function. The latter is a professional detective so far as the exigencies of the tale are concerned, and what becomes of him after that nobody need care,—there is no longer anything to prevent his becoming, in his own right, the most fascinating of mankind.
