Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of a Traveler: Selected After a brief __sojourn in Germany and France, Irving went, in 1826, to Spain, where he remained three years, working upon his Life of Columbus. The labor resulted also in three/other books of imperishable beauty and interest, The Alhambra, the Conquest of Granada, and the Legends of the Conquest of Spain. While there he received unexpectedly the appointment of Secretary of Legation to the court of St. James, and in 1830 he resumed his residence in England. His Columbus had just appeared from the press, and honors of every kind now poured in upon him. From the Royal Society of Literature he received the gold medal of King George, and from the University of Oxford the degree of which title, however, his mod esty never permitted him to use. Two years later he returned to America, and met with an overwhelming reception from his ad miring countrymen. Walk among bears, witness the Inupiat taking of a bowhead whale, and spend time "weathered-in" on the Bering Sea coast. Follow the seasons of commercial fisherfolk in the world's most dangerous seas, sail the Inside Passage, or flight-see with bush pilots famed for high-stakes navigation around Denali, North America's highest mountain. Discover the 49th state’s quirky side, including an entire town that lives in a single World War II-vintage high-rise, a "Hairy Man" who roams the Bush, and backcountry gourmands who communicate with edible plants. Drive the Alaska Highway or head north along the pipeline Haul Road to the Arctic coast, not simply to get there, but to be there. Get the inside view as Alaskans share their stories of learning a new land or guiding tourists through Native culture. Whether you choose camping at Wal-Mart or casting for grayling on a lake named Paradise, whether you travel the Great Land in actuality or in your armchair, these stories bring Alaska alive, in all its latter-day complexity and glory.

Book Worlds to Explore

Download or read book Worlds to Explore written by Mark Jenkins and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2007-04-17 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Polar fleece, titanium, and GPS have forever changed the face of exploration. Today an explorer can make a phone call from the top of Mount Everest and geo-locate himself in the thickest rain forest or the widest desert. Yet despite these advances, few modern adventures get close to the charm and romance of "The Desert Road to Turkestan," "Mysterious Temples of the Jungle," and "Airplanes Come to the Isles of Spice." In those bygone days, the pages of National Geographic were as close as most people could get to high adventure and faraway lands-and here's a chance to recapture them. Alongside noteworthy names like Robert Peary, Amelia Earhart, and Teddy Roosevelt, other less famous travelers take us on long-forgotten trips to places few Americans had gone. We follow as "An American Girl Cycles Across Transylvania," trek "A Thousand Miles Along the Great Wall of China," and glide "By Felucca Down the Nile." Introduced by brief essays that provide context and perspective, these engaging, engrossing selections speak for themselves-and trace the National Geographic Society's growth as it explored the unknown and brought it to readers eager for knowledge of "the world and all that is in it"--Publisher's description.
