Download or read book Tales of a Louisiana Duck Hunter written by Fielding Lewis and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories-all personal experiences of the author-details the differences of hunting in Louisiana as opposed to other states. One can gain insight into the state, its wildlife, its different ways of duck hunting, and its landscape. There are humorous accounts of hunting dogs, character studies of hunters and woodsmen, and examples of good duck hunting. Find out the difference between a marsh and a swamp-there is one. Relive the sighting of the ivory-billed woodpecker-thought to be extinct. Most sportsmen will find that the various chapters provide them with pertinent information for the enjoyment of this outdoor sport. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Fielding Lewis's love of hunting began at the age of six when his grandmother gave him his first BB gun. He spent much of his teen years hunting and observing wildlife and nature with his father. After marrying and returning from the air force, he worked as a mill lumber inspector and plant operator. He purchased a lumberyard that he operated for thirteen years. After selling the lumberyard, he became the editor of a small weekly newspaper in Franklin, Louisiana. His ability to express himself in the written word blossomed into this, his first book, a result of ten years of note taking.

Book The Duck Gods Must Be Crazy

Download or read book The Duck Gods Must Be Crazy written by Doug Larsen and published by Ducks Unlimited Incorporated. This book was released on 2004 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this follow up to his best-selling book Don't Shoot the Decoys, author Doug Larsen offers more humorous observations on the sport of waterfowling. The book begins with a hilarious "Open Letter to the Duck Gods," in which Larsen wonders aloud about what he has done to deserve the wrath of the duck hunting deities, which have obviously conspired against him to ruin his hunting season, his physical and mental health, and his family life. "Three weeks into the season," he writes, "with only two weeks left to go. Everything seems to be going against me, and I wouldn't know a limit of ducks if I tripped over one." From there Larsen lets his duck hunting fancy take flights that are sure to tickle the funny bones of waterfowlers everywhere. These include ruminations on why there aren't any duck hunting movies (in the story "Black Duck Down"), a duck hunt with two sharp-shooting and keen-witted little old ladies in the Louisiana bayou (in "A Duck for Gumbo"), a chapter devoted to, of all things, "Coot Tactics," and seventeen other new and original stories of "waterfowling obsession." Indeed, what was said when Larsen published his first book is even more apt with the publication of his second: "If Gordon MacQuarrie is the voice of the old duck hunters, then Doug Larsen is the voice of the new."

Book Gordon MacQuarrie

Download or read book Gordon MacQuarrie written by Keith Crowley and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although his typewriter has been silent for nearly fifty years, Gordon MacQuarrie’s words continue to inspire generations of hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Through his “Stories of the Old Duck Hunters,” most of which are still in print, MacQuarrie captured the intangible, emotional qualities of the outdoor life in a way that made him unique among his peers. As a result, his audience and his legend continue to grow. Gordon MacQuarrie: The Story of an Old Duck Hunter is the first full-length biography of this literary legend. It explores the relationships he nurtured and treasured; records his coming of age during Theodore Roosevelt’s Conservation Movement; documents his rise to national prominence as the first full-time, professional outdoor writer in America; and follows his life as journalist, storyteller, husband, father, outdoorsman, and conservationist. Complete with rarely seen photographs and a comprehensive timeline of his writings, this book is a fitting companion to MacQuarrie’s own Stories of the Old Duck Hunters anthologies.

Download or read book To Hunt Ducks written by Matt Wemple and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a book about duck hunting, first and foremost, that spans three flyways, and takes you into the blind with everyday, working stiff waterfowlers who like it best when its cold, wet, and muddy. Hunts run the gamut of North American duck country-coastal marsh, flooded timber, rice fields, high lonesome prairie, and sprawling mountain valleys flanked by snowcapped peaks. Many hunts on public land accessible to all. There are hunts on private land in duck clubs that for many are a staple of the waterfowling tradition. From my late teens into my fortissimo, the stories herein tel the tale of American duck hunters who purché this passion in their own inique way. If you're a duck hunter, you've been there, done this, and know what its all about. Duck hunters everywhere are unique for the absurd lengths they will go to be where the duck are. The theme runs through this collection of short stories. There are tales of youthful folly, exploration, family, old friends, new friends, good dogs, wild ducks, wild country, muddy water, and wide horizons. No matter where one goes, the drama of the hunt often plays out the same transcending regional differences while capturing the nuances of culture in a pursuit that has long defined the history of hunting in North America.

Pursuing these waterfowl gave Mr. Gore the spark to pursue a career in wildlife management. He obtained BS (1963) and MS (1965) degrees at South Dakota State University and the University of Maine respectively. He was a senior waterfowl biologist for six years with the Tennessee Fish and Game Commission. Book Tales of Duck and Goose Shooting

Download or read book Tales of Duck and Goose Shooting written by William Chester Hazelton and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales of Duck and Goose Shooting is a wonderful collection of hunting tales by sportsmen who were fortunate enough to have hunted in the golden era of waterfowling. "Whether a relic of Barbarian ancestors getting food or to exercise acquired skill with a gun it must be something imperative that causes man to forego creature comforts, brave possible sickness by exposure to inclement weather, or to brave dangers of accidental mutilation or death. But the hunt brings such an uplift of spirit, that all other sport dwindle to the vanishing point. Far be it from reason to explain. When the season comes there is an indescribable longing only satisfied by fondling a gun and examining the ammunition box. Has there ever been a duck hunter who has filled his bag, made impossible shots, gloated over the fall of birds as they hovered over the decoys who has not had almost as much pleasure in anticipation as realization? Then the night after, there passes in review the incidents of the day, the missed shot, the folding up of graceful wings, the splash of the fall, the chase of the cripple, and the satisfaction of a clean kill at 50 yards." This is a wonderful collection of stories from the golden era of waterfowling at the turn of the century.
