On the basis of almost 400 interviews with ferry passengers and over 250 ferry journeys, the author narrates and reflects on the performance of travel and on the consequences of ferry-dependence on island and coastal communities. Ferry Tales inaugurates a new series entitled Innovative Ethnographies for Routledge (innovativeethnographies.net). When international relations expert Sean Penn leads his own "tour of peace" in Baghdad, every news desk across the country reports it. It's no secret that Hollywood has a leftward tilt when it comes to politics. But what the celebrity-fawning media fail to show is how Hollywood's liberal bias affects actors, movies, and even public policy. In Tales from the Left Coast, author and political commentator James Hirsen digs deep into the liberal underbelly of Hollywood to reveal how biased politics have corrupted the entire entertainment industry. Through extensive research and scores of interviews, Hirsen uncovers some of the most ridiculous, infuriating, and damning political stunts pulled by celebrities of yesterday and today, and he traces the tangled web of influence the Hollywood elite have over politicians in Washington, D.C.

Book Tales from the South West Coast Path

Download or read book Tales from the South West Coast Path written by Jo Harthan and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was 2008 when the author took the first intrepid steps from Minehead, in Somerset, heading for Poole in Dorset, six hundred and thirty miles away. Walking the path was a meditation, with nothing to think about except facing and overcoming the challenges presented day by day, whether by the terrain or the weather. Even in the most remote and inaccessible places she felt safe and at one with the land. They gave her the space and the silence to explore and develop the stories that were taking shape in her mind. When asked for the genre of these tales, Jo explained they were like the contents of those bags of sweets called 'Lucky Bags' that she was passionate about as a child. Like those bags, this is a 'Lucky Bag of Tales' -- a mixture of gruesome murder, ghostly tales, sentient landscapes and wartime dramas. It was the landscape that dictated the sort of story needing to be told. Some of the stories embrace the dark side of religion and spiritual beliefs. Yet others are of the genre magical realism where creatures, usually invisible to humankind, make themselves known to those open to the possibility of their reality. The places in which these twenty eight stories are set, are factual. The people, however, are fictitious. That is fortunate because you really wouldn't want to meet any of them on some of the more remote sections of the path. At the end of each story, there is additional information and explanation about the origins of the tale. These have been added for interest and background information. This collection of stories will inform and entertain, not only walkers on the path, but also those open to exploring the hidden realms of human existence through the landscape. Perhaps they will entice the reader to walk at least some sections of this amazing long distance trail. If they do, please stay vigilant, for now that the characters have been given life in these stories, they will live in the landscape forever. The stories in this book were originally published in four separate volumes and for those only interested in one section of the path, these are still in publication.

Book West Coast Blues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Tardi
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2009
  • ISBN : 9781606992951
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book West Coast Blues written by Jacques Tardi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Gerfaut, aimless young executive and desultory family man, witnessesa murder and finds himself sucked into a spiral of violence involving an exiledwar criminal and two hired assassins. Adapting to the exigencies of his new lifeon the run with shocking ease, Gerfaut abandons his comfortable middle-classlife for several months, until, joined with a new ally, he finally returns tosettle all accounts... with brutal, bloody interest. Released in 2005, WestCoast Blues (Le Petit bleu de la côte ouest) is Tardi's adaptation ofa popular 1976 novel by the French crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette. (Thenovel had been previously adapted to film under the more literal title Troishommes à abattre, and was released in English by the San Francisco-basedpublisher City Lights under the English version of the same title, 3 toKill.) Tardi's late-period, looser style infuses Manchette's dark story witha seething, malevolent energy; he doesn't shy away from the frequently grislygoings-on, while maintaining (particularly in the old-married-couple-stylebickering of the two killers who are tracking Gerfaut) the mordant wit thatcharacterizes his best work. This is the kind of graphic novel that QuentinTarantino would love, and a double shot of Scotch for any fan of unrelenting, uncompromising crime fiction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am already planning the next adventure. The wanderlust that infected me has no cure.' It all started in Fishguard in the mid-1970s when, aged fifteen, Martyn Howe and a friend set off on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path armed with big rucksacks, borrowed boots, a Primus stove and a pint of paraffin, and a thirst for adventure. After repeating the route almost thirty years later, Martyn was inspired to walk every National Trail in England and Wales, plus the four Long-Distance Routes (now among the Great Trails) in Scotland. His 3,000-mile journey included treks along the South West Coast Path, the Pennine Way, the Cotswold Way and the West Highland Way. He finally achieved his ambition in 2016 when he arrived in Cromer in Norfolk, only to set a new goal of walking the England and Wales Coast Paths and the Scottish National Trail. In Tales from the Big Trails, Martyn vividly describes the diverse landscapes, wildlife, culture and heritage he encounters around the British Isles, and the physical and mental health benefits he derives from walking. He also celebrates the people who enrich his travels, including fellow long-distance hikers, tourists discovering Britain's charm, farmers working the land, and the friendly and eccentric owners of hostels, campsites and B&Bs. And when he is asked 'Why do you do it?', the answer is as simple as placing one foot in front of the other: 'It makes me happy.'
