Book excerpt: County Antrim, home to the Giant's Causeway, has a rich heritage of myths and legends which is uniquely captured in this collection of traditional tales from across the county. Featured here are stories of well-known figures from Irish folklore, including Conal Cearnach, with his association to Dunseverick Castle, and Deirdre of the Sorrows, whose mournful plight is linked to the rock at Ballycastle, known as Carraig Usnach. Here you will also find tales of lesser-known Antrim characters such as the heroic outlaw Naoise O'Haughan and local lad Cosh-a-Day, along with fantastical accounts of mythical creatures, including the mermaid of Portmuck, the banshee of Shane's Castle, and the ghostly goings-on in Belfast. Book Forgetful Remembrance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guy Beiner
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-10
  • ISBN : 019106632X
  • Pages : 768 pages

Download or read book Forgetful Remembrance written by Guy Beiner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-10 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants — and in particular Presbyterians — repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of participation, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion.

Book A World of Dreams Scots Irish Short Stories and Poems

Download or read book A World of Dreams Scots Irish Short Stories and Poems written by Gardiner M. Weir and published by PublishAmerica. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These short stories are set primarily in the farmland of County Antrim in Northern Ireland during the author’s youth in the nineteen forties and fifties, though there are related stories set in the U.S. and Canada. County Antrim has strong residual connections to Scotland that are reflected in the manner of speech and in the social values that the author experienced during his youth - hard work, religious belief and valuing family connections. Long before television entered the home, family and neighborhood get-togethers were common, often around a hearth-fire, especially in winter. An exchange of comment kept everyone abreast of happenings in the area though that often tripped into friendly gossip, especially of those whose life’s escapades set them apart from the accepted norm. The very human lives of these wholesome people, their sorrow, happiness, humor and futility are picturesquely captured in the author’s sensitive, homespun stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few marine creatures as spectacular as the Basking Shark. At up to 11 metres in length and seven tonnes in weight, this colossal, plankton-feeding fish is one of the largest in the world, second only to the whale shark. Historically, Basking Sharks were a familiar sight in the northern hemisphere – off the coasts of Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the USA, for example. In an 18th Century world without electricity, they became the focus of active hunting for their huge livers containing large amounts of valuable oil, primarily used in lamps. Catch numbers were small enough to leave populations largely intact, but during the 20th Century a new breed of hunter joined the fray, some driven as much by a need for adventure as for financial gain. With improved equipment and experience, they exploited the shark on an industrial scale that drastically reduced numbers, leading to localised near-extinction in some areas. From the 1970’s onward a new generation took to the seas, this time with conservation in mind to identify where the shark might still be found in the waters around the British Isles, employing new technologies to solve long-standing mysteries about the behaviour of this elusive creature. Using the best of both old and new research techniques, the case was built to justify the species becoming one of the most protected sharks in the oceans. Today, the Basking Shark is a much-loved cornerstone of our natural heritage. There are positive signs that the population has stabilised and may even be slowly recovering from the damage of the past, proving that timely conservation measures can be effective. Join us on a journey amidst wild seas, places, people and conservation history in the battle to protect this iconic creature – a true sea monster’s tale.
