Then General George Crook’s army arrives in town, fresh from their campaign against the Sioux. Among the soldiers are three men Ryan served with, men he hoped never to see again. Privy to a secret he prayed would never be discovered, they’re greedy enough and foolish enough to draft Ryan into stealing from Deadwood’s deadliest resident—saloon owner Al Swearengen.

Book Untold Story of the Best Gunfighters in Deadwood

Download or read book Untold Story of the Best Gunfighters in Deadwood written by Dale R. Lincoln and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-04-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about two unknown gunfighters, Herman John (The Colorado Kid) Tomlin and Howard Price (The Utah Kid) Tomlin, who became the world's best and fastest gunfighters. It tells about their adventures while traveling on a wagon train from Illinois to Colorado. They both pan for gold on Clear Creek near Black Hawk, Colorado. In the 1st Colorado Cavalry Regiment, they fought in Indian wars against the Chiricahua Apache. Were gold guards on a stage from Deadwood, South Dakota, to First National Bank in Denver, Colorado? They were deputies in Deadwood, South Dakota. They were doing show performances in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. When they walked the streets or came to town, they never looked for trouble, but if you back them in a corner, with their lightning speed of fast draw and fire, you were dead before you could blink an eye.

Book Fighting Red Cloud s Warriors True Tales Of Indian Days When The West Was Young

Download or read book Fighting Red Cloud s Warriors True Tales Of Indian Days When The West Was Young written by E. A. Brininstool and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE winning of the West was no child’s play! It was war—war of the most brutal and inhuman type on the part of both Indians and whites. The Indian was fighting for his home, his commissary, his lands—lands ceded him through solemn treaty with the United States government—and what man, of any nation (if he is any sort of man) will not fight “for home and native land”? The white man fought to advance the cause of civilization, irrespective (in most instances) of the rights of the Indian, and without regard to his future existence. Civilization won—and to civilization’s shame, it was at the cost of unnumbered thousands of lives and the shedding of much human blood of both whites and reds. I am not a believer in the old adage that “the only good Indian is a dead Indian.” My sympathy is with the red man. The early white traders who trafficked with the Indian were, as a rule, a class of men of little conscience and few scruples, who would stoop to any deceit or trickery to rob the Indian of his furs and pelts. It was the early trader who introduced whiskey among the Indian tribes; who, through fraud and knavery, turned the red man against the whites of whatever class. This was the beginning of the hatred and contempt which made all white men, good or bad, soon look alike to the warring savage. In this volume of the “Frontier Series” I have written of a few of the most noted battles between the red man and the white man. As in the previous volume, no fiction is employed in these pages. Every incident related actually occurred, and is a part of the history of the old West. Some biographical sketches of noted frontier characters are included. The chapter on the destruction of the buffalo may well make the present-day sportsman pause and reflect.

Now the Army polices the borders while rebuilding its strength. Billy McCarty hates army life. He loathes the daily regiments and rules. Strange sightings in the Black Hills offer him the chance to leave it all behind and lead his own small scout team to investigate. But Billy's never led a team before. As they head into the wilderness, where only the rules of survival matter, his every decision could mean serious injury or death. For him or his friends. Or both. In the Mythic West, where gunslingers battle monsters of myth, Scout continues the epic adventures of the hero, Billy the Kid.

Book Custer the Seventh Cavalry and the Little Big Horn

Download or read book Custer the Seventh Cavalry and the Little Big Horn written by Mike O'Keefe and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the shocking news first broke in 1876 of the Seventh Cavalry’s disastrous defeat at the Little Big Horn, fascination with the battle—and with Lieutenant George Armstrong Custer—has never ceased. Widespread interest in the subject has spawned a vast outpouring of literature, which only increases with time. This two-volume bibliography of Custer literature is the first to be published in some twenty-five years and the most complete ever assembled. Drawing on years of research, Michael O’Keefe has compiled entries for roughly 3,000 books and 7,000 articles and pamphlets. Covering both nonfiction and fiction (but not juvenile literature), the bibliography focuses on events beginning with Custer’s tenure at West Point during the 1850s and ending with the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. Included within this span are Custer’s experiences in the Civil War and in Texas, the 1873 Yellowstone and 1874 Black Hills expeditions, the Great Sioux War of 1876–77, and the Seventh Cavalry’s pursuit of the Nez Perces in 1877. The literature on Custer, the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and the Seventh Cavalry touches the entire American saga of exploration, conflict, and settlement in the West, including virtually all Plains Indian tribes, the frontier army, railroading, mining, and trading. Hence this bibliography will be a valuable resource for a broad audience of historians, librarians, collectors, and Custer enthusiasts.
