Book Brewtown Tales

Download or read book Brewtown Tales written by John Gurda and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Gurda’s South Side Milwaukee family loved potluck dinners. “From the Jell-O salads at the start of the line through the hot dishes in the middle and on to the pumpkin bars at the end, the food was always hearty, abundant, and certifiably homemade,” he writes. Drawing from Gurda’s long-running Sunday Milwaukee Journal Sentinel column, Brewtown Tales was prepared in the spirit of those fondly remembered meals. The main dish is Milwaukee history, served in a multitude of ways. You will find in these pages the biography of a bridge, a requiem for a union, tales of two shipwrecks, a frank take on segregation, and memories of the summer of ’68, among many other things. There are also side dishes that convey the distinctive flavors of Wisconsin and a few more exotic places, from Vilas County to Vietnam. Brewtown Tales will satisfy your hunger, introduce you to new and unexpected tastes, and whet your appetite for more homemade history.

Book Tales of Whitetails

Download or read book Tales of Whitetails written by Archibald Rutledge and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-05-08 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-five stirring, contemplative stories of deer hunting from a winner of the John Burroughs Medal. Archibald Rutledge—renowned outdoor writer, poet laureate, and authority on whitetails—lived a rich life at Hampton Plantation in South Carolina, and had a mystical attachment to deer that found fulfillment in hunting and writing. No American sporting writer has been more persuasive in capturing the myriad, and often elusive, meanings of the hunt. According to editor Jim Casada, Rutledge has an unrivaled knack for capturing the thrill of the chase, and his ability to set a scene is such that it places the reader squarely amidst the deep swamps, ridges of mixed pines and hardwoods, and dense thickets of palmetto and greenbrier. Rutledge considered deer, “that noble, elusive, crafty, wonderful denizen of the wilds,” to be the wisest of the game animals. His firm belief was that there was “much more to hunting than hunting.” He praised whitetails in poetry, found in them a basis for a sophisticated philosophy, and, most of all, immortalized the world of the hunter and the hunted in prose. Tales of Whitetails is the only book ever published devoted exclusively to Rutledge’s deer tales.

Book Tales and Translation

Download or read book Tales and Translation written by Cay Dollerup and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1999-09-15 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dealing with the most translated work of German literature, the Tales of the brothers Grimm (1812-1815), this book discusses their history, notably in relation to Denmark and subsequently other nations from 1816 to 1986. The Danish intelligentsia responded enthusiastically to the tales and some were immediately translated into Danish by a nobleman and by the foremost Romantic poet. Their renditions remained in print for a century and embued the tales with high prestige. This book discusses translators, approaches, and other parameters such as copyright, and changes in target audiences. The tales’ social acceptability inspired Hans Christian Andersen to write his celebrated fairytales. Combined, the Grimm and Andersen tales came to constitute the ‘international fairytale’.This genre was born in processes of translation and, today, it is rooted more firmly in the world of translation than in national literatures. This book thus addresses issues of interest to literary, cross-cultural studies and translation.

Book excerpt: From the moral dilemmas of an ordinary soldier to a man's infatuation with a past love, Tales for Sale, a collection of fifteen thought-provoking short stories, will touch your deepest emotions. "No Honor Killing" tells of a conflicted soldier who thinks hard about what he hears from his colonel: that there is honor in the executions that his men carry out as long as they dress in full uniform. But when the men are asked to kill their own drummer, they must decide whether to follow orders. In "Stations", a man still enthralled by the scent of a past lover must decide whether to take her back when he hears from her for the first time in seven years. "Possibly Cursed Mirror" tells the story of a new homeowner who is desperate to give away a mirror that someone left at his home. The previous owner put it in a corner where no one could ever possibly stand directly in front of it. But the mirror has been moved. Matthew O'Malley delivers a compelling collection that runs the gamut of emotions from funny and sad to scary and light-hearted. Get ready for the unusual

Book Tales from the Back Row

Download or read book Tales from the Back Row written by Amy Odell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Funny and fearless, Tales from the Back Row is a keenly observed collection of personal essays about what it's really like to be a young woman working in the fashion industry. In Tales from the Back Row, Cosmopolitan.com editor Amy Odell takes readers behind the stage of New York's hottest fashion shows to meet the world's most influential models, designers, celebrities, editors, and photographers. But first, she has to push her way through the crowds outside, where we see the lengths people go to be noticed by the lurking paparazzi, and weave her way through the packed venue, from the very back row to the front. And as Amy climbs the ladder (with tips about how you can, too), she introduces an industry powered by larger-than-life characters: she meets the intimidating Anna Wintour and the surprisingly gracious Rachel Zoe, not to mention the hilarious Chelsea Handler, and more. As she describes the allure of Alexander Wang's ripped tights and Marchesa's Oscar-worthy dresses, Amy artfully layers in something else: ultimately this book is about how the fashion industry is an exaggerated mirror of human fallibility--reflecting our desperate desire to belong, to make a mark, to be included. For Amy is the first to admit that as much as she is embarrassed by the thrill she gets when she receives an invitation to an exclusive after-party, she can't help but RSVP 'yes'"--
