Book Folk Tales Every Child Should Know

Download or read book Folk Tales Every Child Should Know written by Hamilton Wright Mabie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Tales Every Child Should Know: A Selection of the Popular Traditions of Various Nations for Young People When the traveller looks at Rome for the first time he does not realize that there have been several cities on the same piece of ground, and that the churches and palaces and other great buildings he sees to-day rest on an earlier and invisible city buried in dust beneath the foundations of the Rome of the Twentieth Century. In like manner, and because all visible things on the surface of the earth have grown out of older things which have ceased to be, the world of habits, the ideas, customs, fancies, and arts, in which we live is a survival of a younger world which long ago disappeared. When we speak of Friday as an unlucky day, or touch wood after saying that we have had good luck for a long time, or take the trouble to look at the new moon over the right Shoulder, or avoid crossing the street while a funeral is passing, we are recall ing old superstitions or beliefs, a vanished world in which our remote forefathers lived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus, in Their Own Words, Vol. 1: With a Translation Into English, and Notes Thus the Work has to a great extent been collected, translated, and arranged whilst passing through the press. This must be my apology for the many imperfections which will be found in it the absence of order, and occasional repetitions. I have been feeling my way all along and have discovered that there exists among the people a vast store of interesting traditional tales, which may yet be col lected 5 and it is possible that I have only just learnt the way of col leeting them. I have already several of considerable interest, which will appear, it is supposed, in a Second Volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Old Schuylkill Tales

Download or read book Old Schuylkill Tales written by Ella Zerbey Elliott and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1906 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local history of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania is full of interesting stories about the intrepid souls who settled there, building the first towns and industries of the region. This is a well-researched and superbly composed chronicle which traverses various aspects of Schuylkill life. It begins with a profile of the German settlers who were the majority group who established themselves in areas of Penn State during the mid-1700s. We continue onto accounts of the initial settlements; essential matters include agriculture and an effective defense from aggressive Native American tribes. To better place the reader character profiles are given, describing certain people and the environs that surrounded them. As the decades went by, hamlets and villages grew into towns such as Pottsville. New industries were born and developed rapidly as the population burgeoned. The discovery of coal plus the advent of steam engines and the railroad led the economy of Schuylkill to prosperity. Churches were built to keep the locals mindful of the Lord, and schools were set up to educate the new generations. Amid all this activity, many intriguing stories and events ensued - together, these bring alive a distant era of grit, determination and hardiness.

Book excerpt: Soso Tham (1873–1940), the acknowledged poet laureate of the Khasis of northeastern India, was one of the first writers to give written poetic form to the rich oral tradition of his people. Poet of landscape, myth and memory, Soso Tham paid rich and poignant tribute to his tribe in his masterpiece The Old Days of the Khasis. Book Nursery Tales Traditions and Histories of the Zulus in Their Own Words Vol 1

This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus, in Their Own Words, Vol. 1: With a Translation Into English The students' edition: the student whether of the Zulu language, or of Comparative Folk-lore. There are therefore some things retained in it which are not fit for the public generally but which could not for the student be properly suppressed. The very value of such a work depends on the fidelity with which all is told. To be a trust worthy exposition of the native mind it must exhibit every side of it. I have felt what so many other collectors of such legends among other people have felt before me, that I have had a trust committed to me, and that I can only faithfully execute it by laying every thing before others. But it would be quite easy to prepare a popular edition, which with a few alterations in the tales, and a condensation and modification of the phraseology, might become an interesting and not uninstructive book for the people generally and especially for the young, with whom it would become as cherished a favourite as any which is found in nursery literature. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus, in Their Own Words, Vol. 1: With a Translation Into English The Students Edition: the student whether of the Zulu language, or of Comparative Folk-lore. And now for the worth of the Work itself. Those "Who love a nation's legends, Love the ballads of the people," will not look upon it as a mere collection of children's tales. They will not banish these legends to the nursery; but will hear them, "like voices from a distance Call to us to pause and listen." To such as these every thing human is valuable. The least incident which can throw light on the nature and history of man, especially his nature as he was in the now hoary past; and his history, as he has been moving upwards in an ever progressing development, or sinking lower and lower in an ever increasing degradation, becomes a treasured fact to be placed among that ever accumulating mass of materials from which hereafter a faithful record of man as he was in the past, and of the causes which have influenced him, and the varying states through which he has passed to the present, shall be compiled. Regarded from such a point of view, these simple children's tales are the history of a peoples mind in one phase of its existence. The tales of olden times collected from the people by Grimm, or Thorpe, or Campbell, or Dasent, are of a very different character, and speak of a very different society from that which takes so much pleasure in the compositions of Hans Christian Andersen. We know not yet what shall be the result of such collections of children's tales. Children's tales now; but not the invention of a child's intellect; nor all invented to gratify a child's fancy. Book Folktales in the Indo European Tradition Imperium Press

Download or read book Folktales in the Indo European Tradition Imperium Press written by and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-05 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, researchers shocked the world by showing that many folktales are not just centuries old, but older than Homer and the Bible. Some tales even trace their origin as far back as the Proto-Indo-Europeans-an astonishing survival of some 6,000 years. Folktales in the Indo-European Tradition is a massive collection of 150 folktales arranged by how far back they can be traced in the Indo-European migrations. This volume includes dozens of colour illustrations by the artist Graman and many tales newly translated into English. In the foreword, we learn how folklore can be one of the most faithful preservatives of Indo-European culture, religion, and even ritual, and how powerful of a tool comparative folkloristics can be in reconstructing the Proto-Indo-European worldview. This volume is an original contribution to the study of folklore and a beautiful treasure to be handed down through the generations, containing some of our people's most ancient stories.

Book excerpt: "A surprising, well-supported perspective on Earth's distant past." - Kirkus How much of what became the folk tales of our ancestors was rooted in scientifically verifiable fact, and what can they tell us about the future? In The Edge of Memory, Patrick Nunn explores the science in folk history. He looks at ancient tales and traditions that may be rooted in scientifically verifiable fact, and can be explored via geological evidence, such as the Biblical Flood. Take Australian folklore, for instance. People arrived in Australia more than 60,000 years ago, and the need to survive led to the development of knowledge that was captured orally in stories passed down through the generations. These stories conveyed both practical information and recorded history, and they frequently made reference to a coastline that was very different to the one we recognize today. In at least 21 different communities along the fringe of Australia, flood stories were recorded by European anthropologists, missionaries, and others. They described a lost landscape that is now under as much as 100 feet of ocean. And these folk traditions are backed up by hard science. Geologists are now starting to corroborate the tales through study of climatic data, sediments and land forms; the evidence was there in the stories, but until recently, nobody was listening. The Edge of Memory is an important book that explores the wider implications for our knowledge of how human society has developed through the millennia.
