Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballad Stories Our ballads, however, are in the main the productions of individual singers, working on older material, and influenced by the tradition of older models. These singers were poets of the people, who cared only for the song itself, who did not seek for posthumous glory, and who have left no name. In some instances a professional minstrel may have been the poet. In Some instances he may have taken the matter of his story from some medieval'romance, and Condensed it into a ballad. Again, in some instances, the story may have been a fragment of contemporary or recent history, and the persons of the narrative may have been the actual persons of history. But history repeats itself, and history sometimes bears a resemblance to romance or fictitious narrative. With an alteration of names, and a slight recasting of incidents, it would sometimes have been easy to adapt an older theme to contemporary events, and heighten the interest of traditional romance with the interest of historical actuality. Book A Bundle of Ballads Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Bundle of Ballads Classic Reprint written by Ruth Manning-Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bundle of Ballads People in those far-off days liked stories just as much as people do now; and because they had few books or none, and for the most part could not read, they delighted in the visits of the minstrels, who roamed the country from one great lord's house to another, singing their stories and accompanying themselves on the harp. The stories the minstrels sang were On familiar themes; stories of well-known battles, of historic raids and captures and daring rescues, of the deeds of bold outlaws, of gallant lovers, and of that mysterious realm of magic that hung like a shimmer ing mist behind all the busy doings of mankind. Of these old ballads no one can say when any particular one was composed, or who was the author of it. One minstrel, hearing the song from another, would take a fancy to it and sing it again, inventing his own lines when his memory failed him, adding new verses according to his fancy, and perhaps giving the story a slightly different twist to suit his audience. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson intro duces The Song of the Sword of Alan, a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lul labies, like the lullaby of Dance in Simon ides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. The deeds of men were chanted by heroes, as by Achilles; stories were told in alternate verse and prose; girls, like Homer's N ausicaa, accompanied dance and ball play, priests and medicine-men ac companied rites and magical ceremonies by songs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads and Ballad Poetry The study of ballads is a study in very plain and simple poetry. The word ballad is some times loosely used, but generally people under stand by it a poem written to be sung and telling a story. There are many poems written to be sung, hymns, for instance, and all kinds of every day songs, but these we do not call ballads. There are many poems which tell stories, but are written without any idea of being sung, like Evangeline, and these we do not call ballads either. But in the early days of literature poetry is commonly sung, or recited in something of a sing-song way, and it generally tells a story be cause in the early days people are more interested in stories than in other forms of poetry. As people grow more and more cultivated, their poems are written down so that they no longer have the character that comes from being written for'musio, and as time goes on people have wider mterests in literature and care for other things in poetry than stories. So ballads are common only in the early days of any literature, or if in later days. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
