Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the American Revolution: Illustrated by Tales, Sketches, and Anecdotes, With Numerous Engravings For these reasons, in most books, fiction wears the aspect of truth, and truth the aspect of fiction. Children are excellent judges of manner, and are very much affected by it. They will listen with much more interest to an indifferent story, happily told, than to a good one stupidly related. They, as well as people of mature age, are more attracted by a novel, or romance, written in a lively and natural style, than by the most important history, if composed in a dull and heavy manner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Revolution From the street came distant sounds of clattering droshkies and jingling tramway-bells, while in the courtyard far below harsh, angry voices could be heard. Yet up here all was deadly still. Suddenly the house-door banged, and the noise re-echoed throughout the building. Footsteps could be heard. Some one was coming upstairs at a great rate, hurrying round each landing, and taking two stairs at a time. As the steps reached the last landing and a figure was about to dash past the dim window the man outside the door suddenly moved towards it. Who's there cried the newcomer in a tone that betrayed more than mere astonishment. Is there a room to let, here Perhaps you may know asked the man at the door, sharply and decisively. Oh! A room I really can't say. Yes, I believe there is. You'd better ring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriot and Tory, One Hundred Years Ago: A Tale of the Revolution, Embracing an Authentic Account of the Thrilling Incidents and Exciting Episodes of the Struggle for Independence; Graphic Sketches of Revolutionary Celebrities It is fitting that the story of our separation from the mother country should be set forth without rancor or bitterness toward either side, and that the feelings, opinions, and arguments of those who conscientiously took different sides in that famous struggle should be explicated. A man was not necessarily a demon, because he was a Tory; nor a saint, because he was a Patriot. Again, there were giants in those days, moral giants, not merely in the higher ranks of the army, but in the station of common soldiers; men who in their narrower spheres, showed the heroic virtues of a \vashington, and of such we would pre serve the portraiture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louis Duval: A Tale of the French Revolution Between sixty and seventy years ago, on a dismal April day, in one of the garrets of a large house, in one of the narrow streets of Paris, were to have been found, had they been sought, a wrinkled, lame, and half blind old woman, and a little boy about eight years old. The old woman's name, spelt English fashion, was Margaret - Margaret Duval, and that of the boy, who was her grandson, was Louis Duval. That old Margaret and her grandson were very poor, could easily have been seen. There was but little furniture in the room, and that was old: the broken walls were patched with coarse paper; while, cold and gloomy as was the weather, - and April weather, even in Paris, is often very cold and gloomy - not a spark of fire was visible on the hearth. But, in spite of these signs of poverty, there were signs also of respectability in that garret. It was clean, and so was the old woman, both in person and clothing; so also was the boy. The dress of Margaret, especially, showed that she had seen better days. As to that of Louis, it had not much, excepting its cleanliness, to distinguish him from the children of other poor families with which Paris abounded, and with which all large cities abound. He had on a coarse loose frock, and was barefoot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Story of the Revolution Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry Cabot Lodge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Revolution, Vol. 2 The affair at N ewport was, however, typical of the sporadic fighting of the summer, differing only from the rest in the presence of the French and English fleets, and in the considerable number Of men engaged. The British did nothing effective. They could hold no exten sive country, nor could they control any important mili tary line which would divide and hamper the States. A foray into New Jersey in September and the defeat Of some surprised militia, the burning of shipping at Little Egg Harbor and the wasting Of the neighboring country by Captain Ferguson in October, an Indian raid into Cherry Valley in November, which failed to take the fort, but burned houses and scalped some thirty persons, mostly women and children, completed the sum of Clin ton's military achievements during his first summer of command. When winter came he was again settled in New York, the only place he held, except Newport, while Washington cantoned his men so as to form a line Of de fence from Long Island Sound to West Point and thence south to the Delaware. His head-quarters were at Mid dlebrook, but he held Clinton fast, and permitted him to have nothing but the ground upon which his men camped and which the guns Of the English fleet covered. Book Tales and Sketches

Download or read book Tales and Sketches written by Benjamin Drake and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales and Sketches: From the Queen City In the gorges of the western slope of the Apalachian mountains, two considerable streams of, water take their rise. One has its source far up among the alpine oaks and chinquapins of the "Old Dominion;" the other courses down from the dark pine forests of the "Empire State." As if aware, that there is strength in union, these streams gently embrace each other at the point where in olden time, Fort du Quesne reared its bristling ramparts to the assailing foe. Thence flowing onward to the "father of rivers," they finally traverse the land of the live-oak and the cypress, and are merged in the Mexican Gulf. From the spot on which these two mountain currents commingle, to the point where they are lost in the mighty river of the West, they bear the name of Ohiopeekhanne; and constitute a lovely stream, nearly a thousand miles in length, gaining volume and power from the tributaries, which from the north and south, seek its protection. Book Stories of the American Revolution Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the American Revolution Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Everett T. Tomlinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 1 The foundation of these stories is historically true. The incidents of home-life, of the struggles of the women and children who were left to defend themselves as best they could, of the privations, bravery, and heroism of those who never went upon a battlefield, have been too much neglected. The men who shouldered their muskets, and at the peril of their lives went forth to meet the foe, are not likely to be forgotten but the no less heroic deeds of those who were left behind are Ofttimes slighted. We have studied the battlefields sometimes to the exclusion of the lives of the men and the women. The author in putting forth these stories con fesses to one grave fear. He would not in any way enkindle today a feeling of hatred towards the mother country. There are too many reasons why the relations between the two lands should be, and should continue to be, friendly, for him in any way to try to keep alive the feelings which prevailed during the Revolution. The times have changed, and it is to be hoped that we may change with them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
